Obama, who was given Secret Service protection 18 months before the election - the earliest ever for a presidential candidate - has been the target of more threats since his inauguration than his predecessors.
Two days before Obama’s appearance at San Francisco fund-raisers on Thursday, a 59-year-old Northern California man was indicted on charges of sending a racist, profanity-filled e-mail threatening to kill Obama and his family. The rambling e-mail included specific references to Michelle Obama and the phrase, “do it to his children and family first in front of him,’’ according to the indictment.
The Southern Poverty Law Center says that antigovernment militias and white supremacist groups have strengthened in recent years, responding to an increasingly diverse population and what they see as an expanding government.
A center study released in August found a nearly 35 percent growth in racially based domestic hate groups since 2000 - from 602 to 926. The center concluded that opposition to Obama’s election has only increased the phenomenon.
“A key difference this time is that the federal government - the entity that almost the entire radical right views as its primary enemy - is headed by a black man,’’ the report said. “One result has been a remarkable rash of domestic terror incidents since the presidential campaign, most of them related to anger over the election of Barack Obama.’’
Threatening language has also found its way into talk radio broadcasts and social networking websites, raising fears that individuals not normally considered threats to the president could be incited to violence.
For example, the Secret Service in recent months has investigated a poll posted on Facebook about whether Obama should be killed. It has interviewed a Florida radio talk show host after a caller mentioned ammunition, target practice, and the president, and federal officials have raised concerns about several instances in which protesters carrying weapons showed up at Obama events, including a man at an August town hall in New Hampshire.
“The racist extremist fringe is exploiting themes that strike a chord in the mainstream more than we have seen in the recent past,’’ said Brian Levin, director of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University-San Bernardino, citing several elected leaders who have questioned whether Obama is a US citizen eligible to be president.

Don't be silly. Racism doesn't exist if we don't personally see it ourselves. Why, we can go to a Klan meeting and as long as we are all singing the national anthem and talking about the deficit then there's no racism at work.
2 users laughed. The question is: Are they laughing with you, or at you?:
what a shame
I don't really care of his position as President, just thinking of him as a father.

As long as Obama is president, all we will EVER hear is that a person can't oppose government spending, health care takeovers, or anything else whatsoever. Ever.
I hate what that kind of pressure might do to younger, less stalwart people. Very culty, is what it is.

Edit: And let me add, while I'm pissed off, that this notion of hiding behind a man's skin color is THE most intellectually cowardly thing I have ever run across.

All right, then. Not everyone who opposes Obama is a racist. But I think you should read Jen's excellent "Bedtime Story For A Racist Troll."

There are no healthcare takeovers except by the insurance industry, Coco.
I've been opposing government spending for a very long time, Coco, and frankly, Bush is the one who catapulted it into the stratosphere. So the scaremongers' diatribes about this administration are flat out lies on that front. And many others.
When Bush was in office, I remember the day he commandeered the entire national stock of lumber for "rebuilding" Iraq [in the desert, where they don't have trees, and don't build with wood]. Turns out it was for his Halliburton buddies, who paid pennies on the dollar and used it to build showers that electrocute our service people. The cost of plywood here at home DOUBLED overnight and the contractor I was working with lost a huge amount of money on a project he was working on- as did thousands of others. Instant destruction of the "housing starts" economy too, because everybody who wanted to build was totalled by it. So much for "conservative".
I was warning about Bush's policies for YEARS while you snickered at me, Coco, telling everybody to plant beans because the economy was going to go down. Now that it has gone down, you're acting like the guy who's in there now did it. That's such a total load of crap.
My very wise high school history teacher said that you can judge a President four years AFTER he takes office, and it's true. You could see what Clinton had done as he left office, and you can damn well see what Bush did as soon as he got in- gave it all away to his daddy's buddies at Halliburton and the Carlyle Group.
Culty? Sorry, it doesn't fly with somebody who watched the mainstream media SUCK ASS for eight years, afraid to argue the facts because they wanted to have "access" to the "administration".
So we were put into two wars on the basis of total lies because of a bunch of chickenshit asskissers and mindless sycophants.
We murdered in cold blood hundreds of thousands of people for big oil. Put millions more out of their homes. Have been bombing Afghanistan, where the explosions do little more than stir the rubble from the past hundreds of years of Western invasions there, and are currently killing hundreds of tribal people in Pakistan for the sin of living where Chevron's minions want to build the TAPI pipeline- and nobody is reporting that shyte.
Remember all the "no blood for oil" protests, and people either laughing at or vilifying them? Turns out the protesters were right, Coco. The big corporations have been committing murder and causing the deaths of our troops for the sake of their profits since 2003, and large numbers of us have been yelling about it and trying to get the message out, and the comfortable middle class mainstream media watchers have refused to listen. And now the same lying sacks of shit who put us into this mess are telling you that you need to rise up and fight the people who are cleaning it all up, and you think you have a leg to stand on? Come ON, I know you're smarter than this.
Demanding that YOU look at the facts, at the history here, and own it, and help the rest of us fight the corporate takeover of the government- that's CULTY???
Sorry, your protests are falling on some angry ears here.
I'm not deaf to what you're saying, Coco, but I'm pissed that you think a. this is some kind of a team sport, red team vs blue team, when it's really about the wealthy 1% robbing the world blind via corporations and war, and b. that you insist that somehow liberals caused it- when it is CLEARLY something that Bushco manufactured for their own benefit.
AND PS I'm not a Democrat and don't trust them either, so don't accuse me of being an Obama fan. I'm waiting to see if he does his damn job.

Jen, I have never snickered at you.
I never told you to plant beans.
I TOLD YOU already, I never read the politics forums at the original SC, and didn't ready any at SLU till last fall, and that is why I never remembered anything you told me I was supposed to remember.
You agreed with that post, so I thought that misunderstanding was settled and understood.
Yet here we are again.
You've got to have me mixed up with someone else, and have forgotten already the post of - yesterday, I think it was - where I explained I couldn't know what you'd been saying for years.
Even if you were under some other name on those forums, I told you, I wasn't on them. I wasn't in any of those discussions about Haliburton or beans or anything.

Again, I'm not red team or blue team. Again, I'm not the right person for you to fight on these things.
Also, if you have been reading, I've been saying it's not who caused it. In fact, I traced it back to the first bailout, under George Bush.

GET SOMEONE ELSE, Jen! I'm not this person! I never read those things, never told you to plant beans, have no idea what you are talking about!

Also, guys, I'm taking this out on you, with my earlier language.
Not that I don't mean it, but I wouldn't put it like I did, except for some real-life stress. Right now, I'm sitting right in the middle of some very big-time real life stress, and posting here while I try to get through today.
I do mean my thoughts, but I'm being harsh and taking things out on you.
Kinda like when my mother died, and I told Siggy what I thought in no uncertain terms, on the SL forums (and ended up suspended because of it).
So, just know that, I'm not saying anything I don't believe or feel, but right now I'm saying it all kinda harsh.

No. We just say that doing it with obvious racists brands you one as well. You can twist that however you want -- since you have and are.
Coco, I understand what a bad day is like. But to hear someone in the tea party movement describe US as culty? Are you kidding? You guys get your marching orders from Glenn Beck, a hyperemotional bag of water who pretends at crying while trying to whip up anybody within ear's reach with his demagoguery. And that's "culty" somehow?

The same was done wish G.W.Bush you couldn't speak against a thing at first for a long time. So I see it as human nature with large groups.
Pisses me off too when individuals will squall there opinions and think for themselves.

I am really sorry for your RL stress, Coco...but that might be a good reason to not post so much on here. That's pretty much why I have been somewhat quiet lately...

Yes, I do believe it shows my true character, 3Ring.
Yes, I got short and called people a name.
I thought about it, and realized I was taking out on people, and apologized for that.
My true character is just fine and dandy. However, I am human, and among mostly friends, so . . .

Honey, if I go to the dentist I take it out on people.
Ease up on yourself.
Maybe getting angry is what you need to do in your situation, not repress it. Use it as a force to get out of this situation.

It's culty when EVERY SINGLE THING is met with this handy "racism" catch-all.
Look at me. Vivianne can't accept that I haven't been to anything racist. She simply can't. I have been hanging around with racists, and that's all there is to it.
"You guys get your marching orders from Glenn Beck" - what IS it with you people? I mean, REALLY, what IS it?
All I can figure is you really, really don't think anybody who disagrees with you politically has a brain in their head.
Whereas you, of course, do. All the smart guys are on your side! Everybody who thinks for themselves is on your side!
On any given topic! Which causes problems when one of the "smart guys" on your side disagrees with you on a particular topic, I imagine. I don't know how you explain that.
But you explain it for everyone else you disagree with (me, for instance), by painting them as brain-dead troglodytes, uneducated rubes who "get our marching orders" from places.
Christ almighty. I suggest you start paying more attention to what is happening with the money and with legislation in this country, and maybe you will deliver your own self some marching orders, too.
In fact, that's the only good thing about going to hell in a handbasket. The realization that if we are going there, at least you guys - the ones full of insults - are coming with me.

It's that's if I bother to look at his program, I can damn near guarantee that people here will be blabbering about it the next day. He says go to DC on Sept. 12, they go. What else is a person to think.

Not at all.
However, I'm starting to wonder that about the tea party/9-12ers, yes.
But don't begin to imagine that they are the only people out there who disagree with the current administration.

Look, I don't see it here, either. Just because I don't see it doesn't mean it's not here.
I should probably forswear this and other message boards, because there is probably some racism here that I just don't see.
(Actually, I've seen it here before, but that doesn't mean I can't use the boards and make my opinions known.)
You just can't get over that not waking up, head in the sand thing, can you. Well, if it is all you have, I guess you'll just keep on with it. After all, I gave it to you, so you can use it as often as you like, I suppose. I just thought it was a simple factoid; I had no idea you would be using it in every post for the next year or whatever.
I certainly didn't think it meant I could have no opinion on anything for the rest of my life, or so says you. "You weren't paying attention March before last, so it's a little late for you to talk now!"
Mainly, though, it doesn't have anything to do with any "high horse."
Survival is a wholly different thing from "high horses."

oh, and I really dig this:
"and you HAVE been to racists gatherings."
I like how you tell me what I've been to. You might as well say, "You saw the Titanic." And I say, no I didn't, I didn't go to that movie. "Yes you did," you insist.
"You went to racist gatherings, you just didn't see any sign that they were racist. That doesn't mean they weren't racist! And they were racist, cause I said they were. So you went to racist gatherings." oh lord

First, there are no sides, although some would like it very much if we all keep thinking that way. It makes us easier marks.
I for one have been a solo artist for quite some time now, as I keep trying to remind you. Here's some of what I've been doing elsewhere, for instance, but I also was doing a fair amount of dead horsebeating on the first SC and for a short time at SLU [I don't like nasty for nasty's sake, myself].
I started talking about these things back in 1998. By the time 2003 rolled around, I was just about wearing a sandwich sign saying that if we invaded Iraq, we were in for 20 years of hard times. Half of my friends [Republicans all] stopped speaking to me for daring to question "their" President. The philosophy of trickle-down had created a "king". There are no kings in a democracy. I won't get into it in depth.
I lost everything I had when I got sick with fibro, Coco. My ex- dumped me over money after ten years together- ten years where I helped him go from repairing shithole college apartments to building $2million dollar mansions. He ditched me because I got sick and couldn't make him any more money. Shortly after I moved out, he showed up hat in hand because his partners had screwed him and dumped HIM. So he wanted me back [because I'd built his business]. I'm sure you can guess my response.
I have very little regard for rich people, I have known many of them all my life [I'm technically an heiress, named on a trust fund. When everybody in my family is dead, I'll get $5 a year or something. However I left home at 17 and made my own way in the world, so I've never gotten the chance to be very spoiled. But when I was a young girl I lived in the South of France and went to private school and had friends who had yachts, and etc.
The thing I've learned is that there's a disconnect with people who've grown up over-privileged when it comes to understanding what you're doing when you financially destroy someone. They just don't get it. They've never had that problem. They have no idea what it is to work yourself into the ground or to go hungry, or to worry. This is why when rich people start talking, I pick my ears up and get extremely testy, which disconcerts and annoys the people who fawn on them. And the people who fawn the most tend to be Republicans, I hate to say it, but it just is true.
Reagan and his "greed is good" and "trickle down" bullshit had absolutely no clue what he was doing to the middle class. And all the people who thought that if they kissed the right ass they'd be given blessing from the sainted rulers were stupid- and would get mad if I told them so.

I'm not insulting you, Coco. But I've been fighting against weasels and liars for more than a decade, and to have you start telling ME to pay attention just pisses me off. Where the fuck were you when I was trying to stop the tide? So now that it's flooded your basement, you want me to pay attention? It's a little late, I've been doing my best to keep people from dying as of five years ago- and it's still not going to be enough because a huge segment of the population is paying attention to their flooded basements and not looking at things like the fact that the food supply will be gone next.
Yes, that's why I was always talking about planting beans. And being laughed at. Because of course, we can't go into another Great Depression and have millions lose their homes and going hungry, and the major food suppliers aren't going to go under, and the factory farms aren't going to go under, that's all just crazy talk, isn't it?
But no, Coco, I'm not coming with you.
I've been working towards self-sufficiency and credit solvency for a very long time, and I'll be fine. Oh, and even if the grocery stores all go down, I can grow my own BEANS.
