Default Potting

I seriously have Monna envy, you do such beautiful work. I always love seeing what you're making and can never get enough of the photos you post.

I wanted there to be a thread for Monna to show off her gorgeous skills, and maybe she [and any other potters in here] to share their creations and tips, tricks, thoughts, and etc.

I have a vested interest in that latter bit: One of my sweet kind neighbors owns a defunct antique store [and all-around Stuff Store] that she no longer opens. And on the front porch of that store, she has a number of items she wanted to ditch. So she asked me [a couple of weeks ago] if I wanted a potting wheel. And while I hesitated, having never thrown a pot*, I snagged that sucker because I'm a tool-using person and have always wanted to learn. Matt finally brought it home in the truck a couple of days ago [still have to unload it into the garage].

It's one of the old-school foot-treadle kinds, no motor on it. That too will be a trick to learn, I know. Have used treadle sewing machines, etc, and there's a bit to getting the movement right. But then my behind could use that exercise, too.

BUT I have one of the tools now, and had friends who did some raku back in the day, so I know how to do that part, and I hope to get after this new thing soonish... for one thing, I am going to need some new dishes, etc, at the rate Matt keeps chipping and breaking them! Ultimately I hope to be able to get some of the local bored delinquents to come by and throw pots instead of breaking into peoples' houses. We'll see...

For now, I will have to stow it in the garage and wait for some of the other projects to get done around here [before I go looking for clay, etc]. But I'm excited at the prospect of using a new toy.

But vested interest aside, I really hope you'll take the bait and just go nutz with your pottery/ceramics/etc here.

*I do know how, I just never had access to a potting wheel. In high school, the "cool kids" hogged the one wheel available, and other than there I never had access.
