Default Ode to Amazon dot com

Yesterday afternoon I ordered scales from Amazon. Last camping trip I spent the whole time worrying I was putting on weight. Which I wasn't!

So to hell with that. I figured I would get a new bathroom scales and just keep the old one in the camper. (Not worried about weight anymore, with the new truck!)

So I researched a bit, read a bunch of Amazon reviews, and picked one. It arrived today! That's Prime for you. Not always that quite fast, but fast, and no shipping charges.

To me, this is close to magic. Or IS magic, I'm not sure.

And it's heaven for old people, as well as those who are housebound, disabled, or out in the boonies. This doubles as an ode to the computer, too, that makes this all possible.

Computers are fucking magic, too. I'm glad I lived in this age, because computers are an amazing advance for humanity and it's been remarkable to witness.

I know! Remember how hard it was to find ANY porn, let alone good port, before the Internet?

The magic of Amazon doesn't impress me incredibly much.
It kinda seems like a no-brainer function in this day and age.

That being said, the computers (and systems and etc.) that allow all that to happen... that shit is awesome.

I recently was talking about that subject... how awesome and amazing it is to be alive at this time.
I mean, sometimes I look around and I'm like, "HOT SHIT! We're living in "the future"... right fucking NOW!"

It does me! Press a button one afternoon and have the item appear on your doorstep it the next afternoon!

It's like the Foodarackacycle on the Jetsons, where you punched in your meal order and it whirred a bit, then the food appeared!

Yeah, but it's nothing new.

There are plenty of places I could have ordered something from in the past however many years and had it at my door the next day.
I get that their logistics are an impressive move in some ways, but overall... it's not anywhere near as world changing as the internet/computers have been and will be.

Shit... it won't be long before you can afford a 3D printer that will just print out whatever you order.

Well no, it is nothing compared to the advance of computers.

It's BECAUSE of computers and the internet that I can shop, compare, read reviews, and all that on things, then just press a button. (Some things you have to see irl first, though.)

True.

Hell, I remember ordering dumb magic tricks that took "6 - 8 weeks for delivery".
Like, for "magic smoke from fingers" and "x-ray specs".

Now, 2 months for delivery would be anathema for most companies.

That being said, I have long been able to order a pizza and have it here in less than an hour.
And they have to make that shit from scratch!

But I agree that the world is crazy advanced compared to what it was like just 20 years ago.

The way things are going, 30 years from now you'll press a button and the machine sitting in the room next to you will print out the item you requested in a few minutes.

Monopoly power. The total failure of the market system in the area of books as one market participant gets such a large share of the market that it can dictate prices to the detriment of every other participant in the market.

Time to shop at Barnes and Noble.

I'll still buy the Dark Mercury books through there, since I don't know of anywhere else I could get a physical copy.

(Same goes for the Pinball series, even though I haven't gotten that one... yet.)

That being said, I've been getting less and less trusting of Amazon.
Something just smelled wrong, y'know?
Barnes & Nobles? I like them.

But really, fuck Amazon.
Any major titles should be available at countless other "storefronts".
Between that and self publishing, there are such an insane amount of choices that they really are just shooting themselves in the foot.

They are available, just not from Amazon proper. Frankly, none of the information customer service has been given regarding this is satisfying at all.

Amazon is still pretty sensible. I ordered a Qi charger that turned out to be DOA. Corresponding with Amazon, they said here's your refund and please keep your dud, don't send it back; order a new one with single day delivery if you want and we'll reimburse you the shipping charges. I didn't do single day delivery, not wanting to bother and not feeling urgent about it. The second one came and works. Small joys.
