you know that Skyrim, despite being distributed by steam does not need steam to operate.

I want to turn it off, but there is no apparent process to do so. Do you know how?

[btw, my internet service is none too fast, either, which helps nothing]

and p.s. I have random buttons dying mid-game- the tab key, for instance, no longer works for the menu, I had to reassign "q" for that, and just now [test running the thing], I couldn't come out of "sneak"- when I tried reassigning buttons, that didn't work either.

Damn glitchy p.o.s. ...

BUT!! In other news- I just want to say that if you or Jorus suddenly find yourselves unattached, I definitely want you both in my Man-Harem.

Luc - how do we run games sans Steam? I have Civilization 5 and it requires Steam and Steam is so fucking annoying that I never play my game. Plus, Steam seems to eat the computer whenever I DO try to play a game that's in Steam - slow, slow, slow, annoying and bogged down.

Civ 5 needs steam..

not every game does though.

The way to test is to go into the game's actual folder, and try to run it with the main exe

Oryx and I picked up Skyrim this weekend as a sort of early Christmas present. We actually went with the xbox version because I just don't think my computer will handle the game and I can't upgrade right now. Not having access to the mod community doesn't really bother me too much.

Overall, it's tougher than I expected, and buggier. Walking through doorways hangs the game about 10% of the time and I'm stuck with rebooting the console. I got hung up in the first dungeon forever trying to figure out why I couldn't turn the pillars until I finally gave up in frustration and googled it, only to find that was another bug.

Other than that, though, the game is pretty good. Graphics are great, I like the storyline, combat is ok, for a console (I hate using a stick to target instead of a mouse like you do on the PC. It's too jumpy and you can never get it to line up with what you're trying to hit, plus it's slower.) I'm sure it's much better on the PC just because of the interface.

I've got a fat, bald Nord with a long beard. Basically, Santa Claus with battle scars. I also have a "housecarl" who apparently isn't what I thought she was when the Jarl told me she was assigned to "serve me".

I just realised something that's bugging me with Skyrim.

The lack of Idle animations with the PC or companions.

Mine has gone from bad [hanging up on doors and transition screens] to just plain locking up while walking down a trail. I don't want to talk about it. Just. PISSED.

Baking a billion cookies, etc, and doing a commissioned Xmas gift, anyway, but I am PISSED about my Nord. :P

But your point is well taken - I could buy a new computer that's better than this one for a lot cheaper (probably) and a lot fewer headaches than it would take to upgrade this one. But I'm not doing either for a while. Times are tight.

And apparently have no qualms about you looting their brethrens' corpses right in front of them after the dragon fight . But Heaven forbid you try to pickpocket one of them. Although I've been having fun stuffing grilled leeks into their pockets when they're not looking.

Ah, Skyrim.

Apparently the Elves are keen cyclists, judging from the (hideous) helmet design.

Baskets and buckets are more dangerous than bear traps (I accidently killed myself with a basket . . . in my own home.)

The residents are completely numb to the obvious poltergeist activity. (protip: avoid decorating with any of the blue ceramic items)

Ah, I'm saving all the intact mechanical bits .... maybe I can make my own contraption (would be nice).

By the time I found dwarf stuff in any quantity, I'd already moved on to Ebony/Glass.

I'm still trying to figure out how to get rich without completely collapsing local economies o.O

I love the classless system. A barbarian can become queen of the thieve's guild. \o/

I picked up the Khajiit follower (now in mixed Orc/Ebony) -- he's less inclined to suicidal rushes than Lydia.

In simpler times:

I need to get some void salts so I can upgrade it. A visit to the Atronach forge is in order. (I think void salts are salt, amethyst, and a crap soul gem)

This character *still* hasn't worked up to the guildmaster armor. I think the only major questline he's completed is the mage one.

{ETA, okay, he's Guildmaster now. Dragonscale trumps the Guildmaster Armor, though}

Now . . . which to do next -- become a werewolf or declare war so I can buy the last house?

Heh, I think I'll raid a dwarven ruin for soul gems and max my enchantment first. :P

I have the problem of wanting to avoid the main quest. It's from other games where ending the main quest would give you the lovely "game over" screen. That and ADHD. Oh, I suppose I'll clean out that cavern . . . OH LOOK BUTTERFLIES AND MUDCRABS (cue scene of me taking my Atronach crabbing)

Bethesda adding over 200 Kinect voice commands to Xbox 360 Skyrim

Quote:
Bethesda Softworks announced today that a free update coming to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim later this month will add support for over 200 voice commands for Xbox 360 players that have a Kinect hooked up.

What kind of voice commands? Well, players will be able to access their "entire menu of shouts" just by speaking the magic words, so screaming "Fus Roh Dah!" at the TV will actually do something other than making you look like a crazy person. You'll also be able to give commands like "follow" and "attack" to your allies simply by speaking them, and assign hotkeys for weapon and spell combinations without having to dive into a menu.
Sweetness.

Oh yeah?

Quote:
During the first three months after its launch, this rate was fast enough to earn Kinect the title of “fastest-selling consumer device.” According to Guinness World Records, which officially confirmed the record today, Microsoft sold an average of 133,333 units per day between November 4 and January 3. So there.
