Default Diet Soda Greater Stroke Risk

Soda make the bum tad bigger or just give you a stroke?

Quote:
According to a study of more than 2,500 people presented today as a poster at the American Stroke Association International Stroke Conference in Los Angeles, people who drank diet soda daily had a 61 percent increased risk of cardiovascular events compared to those who drank no soda, even when accounting for smoking, physical activity, alcohol consumption and calories consumed per day.

Bleh.

Are there actually a lot of people who drink diet soda every day anyway?

My doctor does. I am sure he can give me numerous equations as to why diet soda is better then regular soda.. for example the 7lbs he gained when he bought the wrong kind. He was in shock at how long it took him to loose the extra weight he had gained.

I've never been one to consume artificial sweeteners. But it's probably an easier choice for me than a lot of others: Aspartame (nutrisweet) gives me really bad headaches. On a rare occasion I'll have something with sucralose (Splenda) in it, but it's rare.

Yeah, aspartame makes me sick, too. I have an allergic reaction to it. Too bad, since diet coke tastes pretty good, actually.

Agreed re. the aspartame- it was never a huge deal till I got fibro, but now I can literally FEEL it when I eat it.

One time a group of friends were out together, and one of us had some hard candies of some sort [maybe a mint, I forget]. Anyway, she offered me one, and within fifteen minutes I could feel my body "crashing". I asked her if they were sugarless- sure enough, aspartame. I had to go home early from our girls' night out because I felt dizzy and sick.

For a while there I drank some sodas- Matt was a Pepsiholic- but I have never cared for fizzy drinks much, and I packed on the lbs when I did, so it was a bad choice for me.

I try to stick to sugar if I'm going to eat sweets- no hfcs, no artificial sweeteners. Not as easy as you'd think.

Matt's kicked his Pepsi [full octane] addiction recently too.

Believe it or not, we stick to having a gallon jug of koolaid, some iced tea, milk, juice [occasionally] and water in the fridge these days.
