Default questions about blue mars

so, i'm giving blue mars a look; i have some questions, hopefully someone will be able to help me out. i should prolly ask on the actual blue mars forum, but i'm just not feeling up to registering for another forum today.

first, how the hell do i make that giant twitter sign that's taking up about 1/3 of my screen go the hell away?

once the little control bar thingy disappears for no discernable reason, how do i make it come back?

i'm sure i'll have more questions later; thanks in advance for any useful answers.

Honestly, I would ask on SLU, that is where all the Blue Mars advocates are.

They come off like a bunch of moonies to me but whatever.

Desmond Shang and Hypatia Callisto are the Blofield and Madama Hydra of Blue Mars, and they're at SLU.

My bone of contention with Blue Mars, regardless of tech issues, is the rigid creator/consumer divide inherent in it's model.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

I haven't reloaded Blue Mars since the new computer; I'm not sure I can remember my login!

From the various pictures people have posted, one thing I can say about BM with certainty is that the hair just plain sucks.

Sorry Caitlyn, I'm afraid I'm not going to be much help.

I had thought they removed the Twitter interface (which was never complete as far as I know) - I don't remember seeing it in Caledonia at least, but maybe its still present in other cities. You used to be able to just mouse over it (or the edge, I can't remember), and a bar with an arrow would pop up that you could click to hide. I'll try to remember to have a poke around with this in the welcome area.

The control-bar thing I don't know, I haven't had that happen to me.

Again, apologies for the almost content-free reply.

So, what am I, chopped liver?????????

Is it my fault that attempts at getting Blue Mars discussion going at SC2 have been stymied by what I can only describe as truly tendentious actions by SC2 mods including the repeated, deliberate deletion of the sub-forum ?????????

(Please note that here I'm using "repeated" in its entirely valid, but less commonly known form, of meaning "once".)

If I can be pedantic for a moment (hey, its worked for me thus far, amirite? ), I think its not so much a distinction between creators and consumers as it is between *distributors* and everyone else. I say that, because anyone can register for free as a developer, and they then have access to the complete BM toolkit. You can script, make clothes, do whatever you want. You can even distribute cities to your friends to play with. But it looks like the only way to distribute clothes is to upload them to a shop for sale, and to have a shop you need to be either a city owner or renting from one.

For the sorts of things that *I'd* like to be able to do in virtual worlds, my wild hunch is that the Blue Mars model will ultimately prove to be a better technical approach than SL. (Some of the basis for that belief is that BM "cheats" by not trying to solve hard problems like "how do I maintain smooth frame-rates in a world where anything can be created/streamed on the fly?") But I do disagree with many of their "social" policies. Its not only distribution rights, for example, I'm no fan of the PG-13 classification either (though I can understand why the education camp love it). What it will come down to for me is that I'll keep a foot in both camps, SL for its freedom, (and the people those freedoms bring), BM for its technical possibilities.

Yeah, well, you're just not smart enough to appreciate all that Blue Mars has to offer, and should get out of the way and let us demi-gods get on with things !!!!!!!!111!!!!!!!!

(Yes, I've been monitoring the SLU thread too, and Daniel is doing his level best to push Blue Mars acceptance back several decades. )

Amazingly, I did remember.

I tried Caledonia, Tharsis, Beach City, and the Welcome Area, and I don't get the Twitter interface in any of them. So colour me confused Caitlyn.

Only thing I can think of is that oldest of standbys - are you running the latest client? Mines dated May-18.

There's also only about 5 pairs of shoes for sale, total.

Is it true you enter Blue Mars by consuming Spice?

thanks cale, for the useful replies. the twitter thingy did go away once i went to caledon (or what ever it's called there), but the control interface thingy seems to consistently go away whenever i try to select the "options" option.

Caitlyn Reardon shrugs, "i guess i'll give it another try when i have a non-sucky computer"

everyone else, thanks for the less-than-useful replies. I didn't ask over at that other forum because i didn't want to get dragged into the blue moonie stuff.

ok, i guess that diversion is over now, back to the rope mines.

I had the same problem, you have to download the Internet Explorer version of flash player to make it work.

They don't allow adult/mature content, Mousie, so I've lost interest.

You know, I could even deal with an Adult Content ban, if the General content was for adults. But BM is 13+ and that level of family-friendly is less than thrilling to contemplate.

Yes, it's still around, and I'm hoping they make a go of it for any number of reasons. At the very least, a bit of competition (at least in LL's eyes) might light a fire under the Lindens.

I'll be an occasional tourist out of curousity -- some of the technical details are quite nifty -- but for me it's not an immersive environment that would suit as a permanent residence.

me neither.
I tried the "boats" at new venice and that pretty much sealed it... they let someone who obviously never before set foot on a real boat, or at least tried to sail in a game (virtual skipper for example) design boats.

unrelated: you ever going to put your "make older skins" skills towards mens skins? the only "old man" skin that i know of is one of a really ancient asian man, and while that one's pretty good it's not what i'm looking for...

I can't even get off my ass to finish my next series for women.

The skin maker who used to be Tete a Pied, who then became Fleur (?) had a decent older skin for men, age range around 40s. I don't know if she's still in business or what the business is called; I think she went through yet another name change, but have lost track.

Natural Skins also had several older male skins, but again, it's been some time since I actually checked them out.

In the meantime, you'll just have to suffer life as a charming young man.

5th & Oxford, on the sim Nouveau. I don't know what the status on new skins is, but Roslin is definitely still around .

Try Dendou. It's quality and it has a line of middle-aged skins...
