Default Battle of the Nations, Aigues-Mortes, 2013

Well, anyway, I've got that out of my system for the moment. That's Craig Ivey of Atlanta, Georgia. He's on his way to Aigues-Mortes in southern France to compete in this year's Battle of the Nations. Steel armor, steel blades with no edge, lighter weight maces, no pointy-stabby things (including no pointy sticks). Mr. Ivey looks exactly like what I imagine a ruler of the Middle Ages would be seeking in terms of an armed vassal.

A competitor is "dead" if his (for now, men only) body touches the ground in three places simultaneously, counting his feet. If he's knocked to a knee, that's three: left foot, right foot, knee and he's out. Ditto if he puts down a hand to steady himself. I imagine there may be some fancy footwork to stretch the rule legally.

One on one, five on five, or 21 on 21. Last man standing wins. Russia has won all previous competitions; this is the fourth year of the Battle of the Nations.

More here, with some amazing pictures, too. Looking at the pictures, I felt I was looking back in time about six centuries.

I know who I'd beg to carry my favor into battle.
