Red face I think my laptop is fried.

My computer folks! Two part question here.
1. This new Windows 8 that bites. Do we have to use it on a new PC or is there an option to for go it? I guess I mean is it sold on all PC's.
2. My computer is screwed. I have removed junk off the computer, defragged and ran a virus check. I have a major issue going on. I cannot click on one single thing. My computer thinks I click something else or just heads off to some thing random like extra windows of the same thing popping up. Or not allow me to choose what I need to. ugh Next is a major back up of files on my external HD.
I cannot have this happen two major things I needed my computer for, for tomorrow.
contracts and presentation

I swear to freakin whatever is out there that I am laptop cursed.

Nah, there's still a bunch of new Windows 7 PC's kicking around here and there - but don't waste any time because they're understandably disappearing quick. I've heard from lots of people that Windows 8 on any non-touchscreen machine is just annoying, if not painful.

Are you using the touch pad on your laptop? If so, try using like a USB mouse and see if it starts working right. It might be just your touch pad that's hinky.

Sounds like a driver issue.

P2 has some kind of problem with his Windows 8 machine, too. When the blizzard was in full swing on Tuesday our electric kept going off and on all morning. He had set his machine to automatically turn back on if it was switched off unexpectedly (don't ask me how this is even possible), and he slept through the whole "lights on, lights off, lights on, lights off" thing. When he finally got up and tried to get on his computer it wouldn't boot to Windows. It will come on, but no Windows 8. And he can't get the disk drive open to boot from disk. He called Dell and their solution was to send new boot disks, but this is obviously not going to work if we can't get the disk drive open. We've both searched for a button to press to open it. We've tried the paper clip solution. Nothing has worked. It's a tiny case, like 12" x 16" x 3", and everything is just squeezed into it. He just bought this machine last month.

Can either of you boot into safe mode? Windows 8, boot up and as it starts to try to load windows, hold the SHIFT key and mash the F8 key. Windows 7 boot to safe mode, just hold F8 during boot, no SHIFT key.

In safe mode, only the minimum of drivers are loaded, and sometimes this allows you to troubleshoot by starting other things that load at Windows' boot time and seeing which breaks the machine.

Also the trouble shooter's best friend question "what was the last thing you did before it starting causing problems?" Chances are you installed something, either intentionally or unintentionally, that is comflicting with operating system functions.

If you remenber let us know and we can try an troubleshhot

Thanks guys!
Somehow someway all is back to normal on the PC. Its Windows 7 and I do not want a freaking windows 8. I would cry.
I am going to do a registry clean up as soon as I can, this is a foreboding sign.

I had to complete a presentation with a broken computer and get a contract out to be signed with all required disclosures signed by multi parties. Which they did not want to do, yay me. Then on top of all this yesterday the company replaced its email system! lol
I was up to 2am dying with all this. Nap time if I could but now I have to figure out what to buy a 14 year old for his birthday!

Actually, Win8 is just an improved version of Win7 with a fancy UI added on the front. There are a number of utilities you can get (I installed one from Stardock that cost all of $5) that basically hides the "Metro" UI and gives you back a start button, essentially turning Win8 back into (almost) Win7.

I love Win8 with the Stardock thing.

And I just RTFM'd and found out where the DVD drive button is on my machine; it's not where you'd expect. I hope to be back on my desktop machine shortly.

It's not on the DVD drive? I'm sort of interested in where they put it.

In related news, there's a button on the front of mine that I wondered about for months. Pressing it seemed to have no effect at all. Finally, I worked up the energy to open the box so I could see if I could figure it what it was hooked up to (maybe I should have done that before I started mashing it with my finger, but I like to live on the edge).

Totally not hooked up to anything. It's just a random button. They might as well have drawn it on the computer with a Sharpie. I'm thinking of wiring it to a loud buzzer and labeling it, "EXTREME DANGER! SELF DESTRUCT! CUIDADO!" Then I'll wait to see how long it takes for my son to lose all self control and hit the button. Then I'll laugh like a hyena when it scares him silly.

I'm going to go air horn shopping now...

I mean, hell, if you're going to give me spare buttons, I'm going to do something with them.

No problem. I created this handy dandy diagram for you:

The front of the machine has two vertical doors. The one on the left, as you can see, conceals the sound I/O, a pair of USB ports, and a media card reader slot.

The one on the right (which I have helpfully outlined in purple) contains the DVD-R/RW drive.

Under the left door, where I never expected to find it, is the button to eject the CD/DVD (which I have even more helpfully pointed out with a yellow arrow (not to be confused with this guy).

At the top, outlined in red, is the power button, which I did not outline; it came pre-outlined in this particular diagram.

I'm sure you can understand my consternation.

Oh yeah, I have a hidey cd/dvd button on my Dell too. It wasn't hiding behind any doors though, it's just shiny black, like the rest of the machine. WTF DELL? lol

Well, I'm making progress. Still no Win8 but I am presently on my desktop machine running on a Knoppix Live CD, accessing SC via the Iceweasel browser (Firefox, Iceweasel, hardy har har). Holy iceskating Christ, this is fast. I may decide to go 100% Linux. It doesn't seem to like to do paragraph breaks, though.

Um, P2? How should I put this...

See this image?

It is the universal "eject" icon. It's been the universal "eject" icon ever since the days of like cassette tapes and VCRs, so that's what, the last 30 or 40 years like? I only bring this up because...that button, which you said you would never have guessed was the eject button...seems to be...rather...clearly marked...with the universal "eject" icon...

Dude.

Laptops are a bitch, unlike a desktop, they're not really user serviceable.

You're likely gonna need to get it repaired by a professional.
