As crazy as a lot of that is, here is a report from the front lines in RL:

We started back to work yesterday for the first concert (Friday-Sunday) of the winter season. The final piece on the program is the gargantuan "Feste Romane" by Respighi, colorfully portraying a number of Roman festivals (sadly, no mention of Festivus). Anyway, it includes 9 percussionists plus the timpani player. The percussion guy next to me plays just one instrument, in just the last movement.

He was hired to play horse hooves.

I kid you not.

I have danced that dance already, doing the splits as a consequence of a puddle left behind by a badly operated/operating fog machine. It was not my normal controlled descent. There were two of us who danced that dance.

Our neighbors a couple houses down were having a garage sale and wanted to unload their piano. She seriously considered it. I objected, and she told me that she expected I'd have no problem getting it out of their house, down the ramp, over the curbs, down the street, up the STAIRS to our front porch, then into its final resting place somewhere in the living room where we are planning to rip out carpets and add hardwoods (necessitating another movement of that fucking piano that weighs as much as a '78 Buick)

Seriously. I could have literally perished trying to accomplish that task. Who am I? Hercules? Hulk Hogan? A young, 'roided out Arnold Schwartzenegger without the stupid accent?

On the other hand, the part of me that contains testosterone still got a little thrill out of her thinking I'm a "Big, Strong Man". Am I allowed to admit that?

It's only two houses away, and the piano movers would have charged more than we would have paid for the piano. I'm pretty sure that the job would have fallen to me.

Go to the nearest contractors' bar- the place will have shiny clean pickup trucks parked out in front. Get there about quitting time [generally 2-3-4 in the afternoon].

Chat up the two biggest guys there [TROUT, not ORYX- or there will be complications].

Promise them either $30 each and/or two six-packs and/or a couple of slices of pie, depending on how much they like you.

Prepare to develop the kind of friendship only seen on sitcoms like the Newhart show.
