Default LL WORKING ON NEW VIRTUAL WORLD OMG APOCALYPSE SLARMEGGEDON WHAT DOES IT MEAN???

Looking forward to see what they come up with. Second Life is great, I still think so. I'll use it until the server no longer pings. For all its faults, it's by far the best virtual world out there; nobody's yet come close. So there's no reason that the same company working on a new virtual world using newer generation tech couldn't create something just as functional and fun.

But I know some people are all doom and gloom and "oh no this can't possibly ever be good news". Meh.

Yes, Ebbe let that one slip, didn't he? I'm all for a new grid but this is the Lab we're dealing with, so it's best to take a "wait-and-see" approach.

But seriously, my curiosity is piqued.
I'm sure I'll end up trying it out.

They may not be able to make it backward compatible, but they should offer the ability to keep your username.
(Also, possibly block names from SL being used in... 3L? NO! SL:TNG!!! )

I certainly don't see it as automatically bad news.
It seems like a smart move for them to make.

Well, I've been reading the thread on SLU about this and it turns out... keeping names and social circles is part and parcel.

This will bring more Furries and Goreans.
FFS, this might be enough to end the war in Jessie.

Don't you think/hope that the war in Jessie that is upon us, possibly, will return in new advanced lunatic form in Ebbeland? You know, Ebbeland, or more fully Ebbe-Ebbeland. (Say it aloud, go ahead, do it. Everyone will think you're saying something else and have a cold.)

No. Instead, they might provide a way to migrate your stuff into the New World. However, they may find it too difficult, but prims is prims and mesh is mesh. I don't see why it should be too difficult unless it has to do with passing permissions through from the Old World into the New World.

It may be an issue of optimization, too.
Like... a 100 prim car (that could've been done with 50) which uses 1024x1024 textures for everything from the hood to the door handles.

Or mesh that is 10x more render-heavy than it should be.

Or all the extra content in items that may not be compatible.
Hell, we don't even know if LSL will be used!

Nope, definitely don't need "s tags".
BUT, don't forget... it's the perverts who always push the edges of tech!

I was thinking about important stuff, like shoes, clothes, hair, shapes, and skin. Cars? Pfui.

Same issue.
What if someone wants to port over floppy prim hair that has huge textures for every "strand" of hair?
Or shoes with chunky invisiprims and huge textures for each strap/button/surface.

I would imagine their base avatar shapes and whatnot will be different than SL1 and it's possible shapes and skins may not work with them.
If you have an Appearance mode with a different set of sliders, porting a shape may result in a trollish mess of a shape instead of a beautiful troll shape.

So, while they may be able to allow for porting over some stuff... they're going to want to avoid anything that's "ugly".
Y'know... starting from a clean slate, who wants to invite in part of the mess that they're trying to get away from?
(Not that there aren't plenty of awesome things that could get brought over, but allowing them means allowing the shit, too.)

I'm not saying yer shit be all fucked up.
What I'm saying is invisiprims, excessive textures, etc. would all be "ugly" and a "mess" in the brave new SL:TNG.

We have to assume that they're going to pursue some line of programming and presentation that will disallow, hinder or otherwise mitigate the issues we see in SL due to all the old workarounds as well as all the shit that people make when they have no clue how to minimize impact.

It's like starting a new car company, but then using a bunch of old half-busted parts to make the cars.
At that point, you may as well be a Chevy Nova in a Spanish speaking country... cause you ain't gonna be going anywhere.
