Default Can I export my shape as an obj file?

I'm working in 3d Studio Max and I know that there are standard male and female obj files that I can import to build on in 3dSM but I would really like to be able to export my own shape. Anyone know if it's possible and how I would do it?

I think that there is only one .obj file for all avatars in SL, the Ruth avatar shape. SL software then renders the stretch/compression for each associated with the shapes slider setting numbers, though males start out from a different zero of the Ruth avatar shape, after they render as Ruth. We are all deviations of the Ruth .obj file. That .obj file, and its male stretch version, is available from Linden Labs downloads page, iirc, and which you already know.

Thus, my answer is that you can't do what you want to do.

gli intercept can do it.
but it's kinda evil, as in you can also steal textures and stuff by using it.
so that's all i will say on the matter.

Did some reading. I get that gli intercept is used for copying textures and I can certainly see how that could be misused. I'm not at all interested in doing anything nefarious, but even so, how does it save your shape? I understood it just automatically saved textures in the immediate vicinity of your av. Does it automatically save your personalized shape as an obj file too or do you have to do something in particular?

Io doesn't know what he's talking about glintercept will only grab textures like clothes terrain and ui stuff like icons and buttons and maybe ten thousand (20,000!) other 4mb files of nothing but blackness or are linden ocean default blue color that will fill all your hard drive space and make your computer conk out.. ,The old copybot was able to assume shapes, bt I don't remember if it alolwed you to export that as XML or something maybe then you could import the XML into photoshop ce9 for MAC. I would pursue that before I would take Ios advise and head off on a wild goose chase but thats just me dude

The Emerald viewer will allow you to export your current body shape as an obj file. You export it in three files, head, upper body and lower body. When I import them into blender they all line up but are on their sides, rotating -90 degrees stands them on their feet.
You can also export the hair mesh, eyes, eyelashes also.
I am not at my home computer but it is found under the Advanced Menu>Meshes and Morps

Thanks Alexi - got 'em! And I didn't even have to do anything bad. Somehow I'm a bit disappointed

Ok, I thought this was too easy. So, the main reason I wanted to do this is to make things on my Na'vi avie, which is very differently proportioned than a human avie. I did manage to export my current av meshes and get them into 3ds but, as you can see from the comparison pic below, it's not actually my current avie mesh. Some things are changed, the boobs are smaller, the shape of hips, extra leg muscles. But others aren't Obviously the av is much taller but it's not just a matter of stretching the whole lower part or upper body part, that takes it out of proportion.

Is there something I'm missing?

Yes, as I appear on the right is exactly how I was when I exported the mesh. It's a shape I made myself.

Sounds like you found a better method. That is good.
But just to refute CoolGuy, gli also kicks out an obj of an av mesh.

Here's my friend's av I captured and brought into 3Dmax.
Yeah, some of the mesh's normals are all fucked, but that's fixable.
Here's her av with her custom shape and all her attachments.

That is way cool, io. I suspect it looks more like your friend than my Emerald version does of my avie

Update. Although I have not been able to get any kind of precision in exporting my current av, I have found that it is totally unnecessary. Sculpts imported into SL are out of proportion anyway in that they basically fill a square box and have to be stretched and shrunk to fit. Once done they do seem to fit my current av quite precisely indeed.
