Default Let's stop smoking cigarettes together

I quit back in late September and I was soooooo good up until a tragedy touched my personal life back in March.

That is always my excuse. Some kind of shit goes down and then I think I deserve a cigarette for enduring a tragedy.

I have stopped smoking several times since... usually making it about one to two weeks at a time... before... I find THAT excuse.

Currently I have placed restrictions upon myself that limits smoking cigarettes:

1. Never with a friend
2. Only on my back patio

Smoking is not just one habit but a series of habits. The habits I need to break are:

1. The cigarettes I crave when I take a break from painting.
2. The ones I crave after Mr. Lula goes to bed
3. The ones I crave when I read forums (uh oh)

I am going to do it again soon with hopes that it sticks. I know that I have to keep on trying. I know the more I try, the more I realize that it is not the end of the world and I won't die from trying.

Join me?

Share your triggers, habits and obstacles. Let's support each other's efforts.

I'm kind of trying to quit. Well, it's more like finding things that help me smoke less. So, I stock up on sugarless Werther's candy on Mondays (like, four or five bags!) and suck on those during work because I can't smoke at work, and going out back to stand in the heat was just annoying/energy-sapping. So, the candies work. (Now I'm addicted to the candies). Other things I do to help me smoke less: stay off computer at home, knit, spin wool with spindle, quilt, go for a walk, eat, chew on a pen lid. (I'm apparently oral, lol). I tried sunflower seeds, but they're REALLY addictive, so I had to stop. I haven't set any goals for this, and I've been smoking since I was 18 (25 years!), so it's a struggle I'm not fully committed to yet. As I replace the cigs with other things I think I will get there, but no promises. Cigs are my coping device for so many other things: stress, anger management, boredom, something to do with my hands, a way to "gracefully" leave a situation I'm not feeling comfortable in, addiction to nicotine, etc.

Some things I find helpful...
- skip your morning cig and once you get over that hump, you can much more easily go the next few/several hours without one.
- candy cigarettes, flavored toothpicks, Necco wafers, etc.. (a lot of the addiction isn't even smoking, it's having something for your hand and mouth fidgits)
- I almost exclusively smoke only when taking the dog for a walk... and we've been trying to stretch out how often that is (he was going every 2 hours).

(I should mention I'm giving you my support, but I'm not planning on quitting myself. Just thought I should mention it. )

Extra mission: Go around people who are smoking and refuse to have one yourself. Extra credit if you do it while drinking alcohol or coffee.

OH!

And keep in mind how much better food will taste if you avoid smoking anywhere near meal time!

I quit 6 years ago. I was addicted to nicotine gum for 3 years after that.

Last summer, M (who had also quit a few years ago) started having one or two when we went out...I'd have a drag here and there, then I'd bum one of my own, then I'd buy a pack and smoke the whole thing in a day.

I got back on the gum, buying a pack of smokes here and there, going back and forth. I finally got back off both of them for a couple weeks about two months ago, but went back.

I started back up two weeks ago, and since Thursday morning, I've gone through 6 packs...I woke up less than 2 hours ago and I've already smoked 7 cigs.

I hate the way my house smells, I hate the way my breath smells, I certainly can't afford them at $8 a pack (Massachusetts hates smokers), and I smoke so much that when I try to smoke pot (which I'd much rather do) I can't even inhale it.

I've been through hell the last few days so it's understandable...I just want to stop smoking sooner than the hurting is going to stop, cuz I know that's gonna take a VERY long time.

I am still going to do this... just saying.

I fractured a toe. That mother fucker is the hurrrrttsss... so right now, that is my excuse for not stopping tomorrow.

Soon though... I am so familiar with how good it feels to breath... it get's easier each time I try. I am looking forward to my next quit date. I know it will stick one of these days. I just have to keep trying.

I am thinking August 13th... Monday quit days work for me. Anyone want to join me? Or just follow along as I try?

I have not had a cig in about 3 months. I am now quitting this electronic cig and it is back to having nicotine fits. I'll join in.

Lulu, stop smoking!

Sorry, that's about all I can add because I'm one of those annoying people that had no problem quitting (I never smoked heavily though) All I can do is say I love you and want you to stop because you will be healthier and food tastes better when you stop.

Plus people who don't smoke will be happier to be near you.

Seriously. As one who can't get near others who smoke because I have allergic asthma and the smell sets off coughing fits and makes my throat close up. It's one of my worst triggers. I find myself declining invitations from friends for dinners and such because of it

So who has had a cancer scare?

*Raises hand*

I am having one now so... don't I feel like an idiot lighting up? It doesn't have to be your lungs or any part of your respiratory system... cancer is cancer.

Plus, cancer ate up and killed my mother over thirty years ago.

What is your motivation? Please share... especially Beau and Tex... Sans?

Let's do this!

I've already blown it. I've moved my quit date to Sunday night.
I haven't had a cancer scare but I quit for 6 months about 2 years ago.
I felt really good. Smoking makes me feel tired. I've been smoking since I was 14. That and I smoke 2 packs a day. I'd save $200.00 bucks a month if I quit.

My mom has been smoking since she was 14. She is now 65 and can't walk more than a couple yards without losing her breath. Emphysema, inhaler, no exercise, very loud wheeze, yet she is still smoking. I watched my grandmother go through the same and live out her last few years on an oxygen tank. My grandmother was only 82 when she died. Part of it was a broken heart, but the rest was smoking-related.

FYI there is no such thing as a quit date. If you want to quit you need to throw away your cigs now. Like right now. And for the next three months you pack road snacks from home and pay for all gas at the pump.

If you hope to set an arbitrary date where things won't suck I have news for.you: things always suck. Its called an excuse. Chuck em.

Excellent point. Thank you, Jorus. Excuses are a downfall when quitting any addiction.

I am still going to stick with my quit date though... I have my excuses built up to that date. But on August 13 I have no excuses. I have the time then to deal with the withdrawal.

I know I will have challenges on those days (people/traffic) but feel like I am a tiny kingdom building up my defenses to battle addiction... psyching myself up. Getting ready for a personal three-day war.

My little tiny army of oxygen cells beating back the strong pull of poisonous carbon dioxide and... and...

Spacey... that is awesome. Once I get through the first three days I am good... well, no because I started up again after six months but really... the withdrawal cravings ease up for me at the three day point.

I am gonna be there next week at this time.

I bought 5 packs of cigarettes today which will last me through Sunday.
I am in for a quit date of Monday.

This is going to suck, but it will be good to know someone is suffering with me.

Same exact thing. The first three days suck really bad.
The following 3 weeks don't suck as bad.
After that it isn't bad at all... until the six month mark in which I've relapsed... twice.

I have enough cigarettes to last me through Sunday too. I am already hating each and every one of them. I am looking forward to not being a slave to tobacco.

Our son, the sailor, is here for the weekend... Stationed in Bremerton, WA he drove over from training in San Diego last night. I was waiting for this visit to be over before I quit smoking because he is a smoker. I didn't want to be a spaced-out-tobacco-craving bitch while he is here because we rarely get an entire weekend with him.

Just finished smoking my lucky.

Broke the remaining 4, put them back in the pack, and poured some iced tea on them so I wouldn't dig them out of the trash can and piece them together.

I'm done.
Good luck Lula! I'm with ya on it.

Night all.

I gave a pack away today. I overestimated how much I was going to smoke between my last purchase and tonight. I have four left and when they are gone I am taking all the cigarette butts out to the dumpster.

I am not going out on the back patio tomorrow morning (see OP.) I am going to paint.

We can do this, my friend.

I caved...started with a couple Thursday, a few more Friday, and by the time I got to her house Friday night I was back to normal.

I finished my last one an hour ago. Back on the gum! I can do this.

Yeah... that is usually my downfall in the short term... I think, "Hey you have made it X days! You deserve a treat! It is only one cigarette..." Before long I am back at it.

Good for you jumping right back on the wagon, Spacey. It takes as many tries before you can make it stick... don't I know it.

I got an app that tells me I have made it 15 hours and 25 minutes.

I broke down and had one.
My hot Mexican neighbor was on her deck smoking as I was picking peppers and we got to talking. She offered me one.

Women are evil.
That smoke was amazing though.

So I guess my time starts all over again.

100% pure Tea tree oil. I bought it to treat a skin issue. Had a cigarette after I put it on. It burns the FUCK out of your sinuses and eyes if you smoke while this stuff is in the air, and it is potent, pervasive stuff that lingers in the air for hours. You won't even want to smoke after one experience with this stuff while smoking.

Nope, not me. I am all hopped up on Clorazepam from this morning's MRI. Sometimes being claustrophobic has it's advantages. Everything is rosy. Two days and 12 hours... annnnnnnd it is nap time.
