Default Meshing around

After reading about the mesh stuff in the Nobody Cares thread and not seeing a general thread for mesh shit, I decided to start a thread for it.
Mind you, I haven't gotten into it personally and have only fucked about with one or two things a few years ago, but it seemed like we could use a thread for programs that people suggest and general help and whatever.

Also... seeing the different programs people were talking about I thought it would be worth mentioning that Daz3D is now FREE.
More specifically, DAZ Studio Pro is free and includes GoZ (a Zbrush thing).
(I'm pretty sure this is a fairly new development.)
Anyway, here's a link: DAZ Studio 4.6 Pro

Worthy of note: It mentions that this is for a limited time, no exact dates, but "limited time".
(I haven't used it, but I grabbed it for if/when I'm ready to.)

Sorry I have no pretty pictures to post, but I'm sure some of you can provide pretty things to look at and/or opinions and suggestions.

Awesome idea! I can post about my mesh learning here. ^^

I posted a pic of a thing I'm building in another thread. It's going to be a vehicle; and I'm still building it - but at the moment I've stopped in order to read up on all the little nuances and things about creating complex mesh vehicles in SL (number of separate pieces, moving parts and all that jazz), since that's important to know when choosing what exactly to model and how exactly to model it in the 3D app and all that - you know what I mean.

I've also gotta do some serious paper designing. What I'm building is...not a normal kinda thing anyway; but even among things of its kind it's unusual. Depending on what I come up with I might have to start over with the model but that's cool.

LOL...couldn't just build like a hat or something for my first mesh object. Had to be something big and crazy.

DAZ has a good marketing model: sell the razor blades and give the razors away for free.

Dakota, I'm looking forward to seeing how your vehicle turns out!
(And steps along the way, for that matter. )

Govi... I've never used DAZ, so I'm not sure what can be done with it.
Is it something worth installing or would you say there's a better program for a beginner?

I've never done anything with DAZ. I have it installed, but it's not intuitive, so lessons of some sort are required, which I've not done. Thus, I can't say, Kick.

Well, knowing it's not intuitive is helpful, so thanks for that.

Although, knowing my timing, I won't even touch any of it for years.
(For instance, my "store" STILL only has the two shirts and crappy textures on the walls... after 3 1/2 years!)

I did try Sculptris a while back though and made a bust of... well...this guy:

OK peeps! After having to take a break from mesh for a period of time, I started up again last weekend - re-going through all the tutorials and re-learning Blender and all that cool shizzle. Well, starting last night I began building a thing, and I finished just an hour ago!

Behold, my very first SL mesh object!

That's right! Textures and occlusion shadowing baked in, cuz I'm just that rudimentarily awesome!

This is just the beginning. More complexity and stuffs to come with time.

Second mesh upload: an old treasure map!

This one seems like a simple shape - just a couple of curled corners and some splits along the edges - and I thought I gave it simple enougb seams; but the UV map it tried to create was just bizarre, it took me a while to stretch and flatten it out right so that my map texture would look right on it. This map is for an in-world project I'm helping some friends with.

More stuff: Books, a papyrus scroll, and a stone tablet.

You're lookin pretty good there!
It looks like there's noticeable improvement between the cooler and the books.
Sure, more can be done to make those items look more realistic, but that's pretty damn impressive after having to re-learn everything!!

Keep us up to date on yer shit, kiddo!

Anyone who wants will be able to see my very first attempts at mesh in-world at Burn2! They will be on a table at the Escapades build, a kid-av-built plot in Elko. They can be clicked for some notecards...

Jeez... it seems like forever since I've been to a Burning Life event!
I doubt I'll make it, but knowing that that there's a showing by someone from SCII may tempt me to try to make it.

(I think it was the first Burning Life that I had a build in, obviously under a different avatar name than Kick.)
