Heya Mari!

I'm a little dubious as to the usefulness of materials; visually anyway, SL's already-existing lighting and shadow controls produce some striking and very realistic images. I guess I'd have to be convinced.

A lot of people who kept the thread on the old forum going on a day to day basis moved on.

I don't even know where 90% of the people went. And some are even on my friend list. My friend list is filled with missing people.

I probably won't be around, but, I saw a post over on SL that pertained to the fact it might be nice if I restarted the old thread... so... here it is.. reborn, intentionally this time, but I do hope with the same love, kindness, friendships and fun that the other one had.

I shoulda clarified: this thread seems to be one of the few active parts of SLII. Did it just die out slowly, or did something dramatic happen?

I've been playing with them a bit. They're great for some added detail you just can't get, even with the current advanced lighting.

Some decent examples:

And my own poor attempt:

Mari - I think it's because there are so few of us left, and we "talk" to each other elsewhere on this board or on Twitter for example. So there are other ways of keeping in touch.

Personally, I left the Forum Cartel months ago since there were so few people left from the old crowd around. There are a some I see regularly (like Feline and Maureen) and others I see now and then just at events and such.

I miss Chris Norse. He was the glue that held the Cartel together and since he's been gone it just isn't the same, and us "oldbies" have either moved on or lost interest - leaving it in the hands of others. I'm surprised it is even still in existence since it seems nobody ever hangs out there anymore.

To me it felt like the newer folks, never had the same feeling of community and family that I think the rest of us did from being in on it at the beginning. They certainly had no reason to follow this thread, or any similar.

Boh-woh woh-wohruff!

Last post was in July? Not so very long ago I guess. Maybe someone will read this someday.

Perhaps it is SL itself that is fading away. Once in a while I log in to pay rent for promoting some e-books I'm involved with on Book Island, but nothing much seems to be happening anywhere. Of course I always had trouble finding things to do even when I was more active. Two or three of the old crowd have befriended me on FaceBook, Elora and Ghostie and Jen from this forum, and I also follow Fmeh on his YouTube site, but I too am busy with the real world, getting art assignments again.

I do miss all of you folks and the SL experience, but weirdly the social anxieties I may suffer from in RL translate over into SL just as strongly even though I am that most social of creatures, a dog. It is stressful for me to communicate. Ah, but the SL concept still has so much potential. . .

I have recently had a falling out in a classical music forum I frequented, so maybe I'll use the freed up time to do more of SL again. That would be nice. It has changed a little though - all these meshes and lighting and materials stuff. No time for me to learn any of it. I was in today for a while (as an alt) but they were having the Wednesday rolling restarts. Some things don't change at least.

Cheers.

I have no idea regarding SL either flourishing or fading to be honest Weston. I haven't logged in SL in ages.

I don't think this forum really has much to do with SL anymore. It just... is. This forum took a life of its own apart from SL I think.

Anyway, good to see you. Sorry to hear about your falling out with your classical music forum. Hope to see you posting more!

Lots of people are still around this forum; but it seems all of the day-to-day conversation has drifted to the "Nobody Cares" thread; it also seems that the conversation only occasionally involves SL-related things, people spending more time talking about RL-related things. I miss the SL-related things; people post about them now and then but the conversation just never lasts.

Weston, Ghosty and I log in rather regularly, as does Maureen and some others. While I am not as social as I used to be (lately I'm in mostly to do photography) I do show up at The Listening Room as I can (sometimes I'm just too tired from working all day to stay up for it) and of course, when Ghosty does his DJ gigs I'm there. I am not involved with the Cartel any longer, but do maintain friendships with some of those people. I'm just not into the inworld hanging out probably because I just don't have the time for it. I have a very nice home in Holland, which is owned by Marx Dudek, where she, Whiskey Monday and only a handful of others live. Nice and quiet, big pieces of land. It's the first place I've lived in all the years in SL that I really can't see ever leaving.

And yes, more people are over at Nobody Cares, so please come on over and post there. Or, even share your artwork in other forums if you're still actively doing it - I know I'd love to keep up with what you've been doing.

Sorry to hear about the classical music forum. Hope you're ok!

Yes, this thread has been pretty quiet, and as Elora said, most folks have wandered over to the "Nobody Cares" thread.

For me, while I don't want to in the past, I certainly do miss the Forum Cartel of past years. Things just haven't been the same with Chris Norse's absence.

But! Hie ye hence to the "Nobody Cares" thread for some news. :-)

Is anyone else having....severe problems with SL today?

I don't mean things taking a while to rez or delayed transactions. I mean like, none of the names in my friends list are showing up (they all say "loading..."). I see several online, but not their names and I cannot IM them. My "nearest" list shows only ID strings rather than names. My groups list - tells me I belong to 0 groups! My mesh clothing won't rez; although non-mesh objects do.

Secondlife.com, the main site, won't load - it redirects me only to the login page. The secure Marketplace seems to work, but both it and the login page have weird non-SL-related banner ads on them. I'm used to SL having odd glitches now and then, but this is like some kind of cascade failure of everything.

ETA: I couldn't leave my home sim, either by TP or by flying in the direction of a known adjacent sim (I just flew around out on the grey section of the minimap for a couple of meters). I tried logging into a different sim - and now my lists and clothes work at least, and I can TP around, but people are telling me there's mass grid weirdness going on. One of my friends says he logged in wearing clothing attachments he knows he deleted a year ago.

I just checked. No problems loading nearby avatar list, same for friends list. I didn't test tping, but SL seems quite normal, that is, at its best.
