OK, so do you eat food in SL?

Maybe you do. But lots of people don't. Why?

Because eating in SL is among the lowest-quality experiences available in-world, that's why. Sex animations, skin, clothes, and prim furniture are photo- and video-realistic. Food props? Usually a flat picture in a plate. Or an un-flat but misshapen mass in a plate. Some of it's pretty good visual quality though - but then what? Poor animations, which usually consist of your avatar raising a static prim to its mouth every once in a while. The picture in your plate never changes, so you and your dinner companions pretty much have to just arbitrarily agree that you're finished eating. The worst part is, you usually forget the food item or utensil is in your hand; so a couple of hours later you happen to notice your avatar raising the ice cream bar to its mouth again while you're standing in a club or whatever, and you're like "oh shoot!" and quickly remove it. Yeah, not the greatest experience in SL. And every single one of these problems can be fixed, and quite simply, by the talented scripters and designers and animators in our virtual world; but...they almost pointedly refuse to work on it.

But every once in a while you find something neat!

Feast your eyes on this masterpiece:

It's a pizza - which is pretty awesome. It's steaming, so you know it's hot. It's not flat and unappetizing; it looks yummy!

See the missing pieces? I ate those. Yeah, you click on the pizza and it gives you a slice - which disappears from the pizza in the box. There's other pizzas that disappear piece by piece as they're clicked on, of course; but this, one the actual piece you click on is the one that disappears, rather than slices being taken in a fixed order.

So that's great, right? Well what you gotta realize is what I couldn't take pics or video of. So you click the pizza and it puts a slice in your inventory right? And you wear it just like all such things. And it animates you - and the animation is already head and shoulders above all other eating anims in SL because your avatar actually opens its mouth when it takes a bite. Oh, and after a number of bites, the food object automatically un-attaches. That's something really higher-quality food does anyway...but this is better! Because as you take bites of the pizza, the slice actually gets smaller and smaller in your hand! Until you eat the last little piece of the slice! And then your avatar finishes by licking the last little bits of pizza sauce (I guess?) off of its fingers! OMG it's so awesome! Once all the slices are taken of course a whole new pie re-rezzes in the box.

So to recap - you and your friends can take pieces, like out of the pizza box, and actually eat them bite by bite until they're gone...and, NO food left in your hands when you're done, and you can eat the whole pizza so you all know when you're "done eating".

It's in the Marketplace as [Play>] Edible Pizza and is only L$50.

Yes, this post was just to report awesome SL pizza. Carry on!

It's a shame that content creator doesn't seem to have made any other neat food.

By the way, did you notice my new kitchen?

I'm not 100% happy with it - but for the near term it looks great, and is animated. It's the PG version, natch - there's other versions that let adults do gross things in the kitchen where the rest of us make food that we eat...but anyway, this one's great. It's got some nice chill-on-the-counters poses and stuff. The fridge opens and closes, but the interior photo is a little flat and boring - I've seen a fridge that rezzes shelves full of prim food when you open the doors (and de-rezzes them when you close it), and gives you a "food and drink" menu that puts food in your inventory. I guess next to that any photo-fridge will look kind of lame.

One thing the kitchen does have its lots of stuff. Appliances, dishes, prop food - it's got barrels of it, to arrange and set out as you like. Again, sadly, none of it gives any food - it would be nice, say, to click on the coffeemaker and it actually give you a cup of coffee, like many do - but meh. It came with a table with placemats that rez a few meals, but I already have my own placemats that do that; and although the prim food looks good, you still run into those problems with SL eating that I mentioned earlier - the food on the plate never goes away while you eat for instance. So until food with this kinda simple (seems to me) feature comes out, I'm prolly gonna stick to individual goodies like the pizza when I see them. I can get some drink pitchers for in case visitors come by.

The biggest glaring problem I see with the kitchen:

Where's the range? I didn't even notice that in the store. Weird.

I did see a mesh kitchen at another store that has a range, and all kinds of goodness that I'll get next time I'm willing to drop the money for it. Anyways, this will do for now. And you know there's always pizza at my place!

Cody, it's funny you mention that ("Where's the range?"); I wondered about that myself. I was also trying to figure out what's on the other side of your seating area. Is that a cutting board on the counter?

But nice!! Two ovens! That comes in handy at the holidays.

It's a little embarrassing, actually - I mean, you probably noticed it right away. But I rezzed this thing in-store, and I looked at the color and the dimensions (as in, would it fit in the space I had) but it never even occurred to me the thing didn't have a range. Oh well - that prolly just proves I'm male.

Yes, it's a cutting board - and it has a chopping anim (one thing the kitchen does give you is props for its anims - but they aren't given automatically, you have to click on a certain cupboard which gives you a menu of props for specific anims to take). But the only problem with the chopping and sink anims is that it makes me hover above the ground while I'm doing it. I guess I need to get a box to stand on or something.

That reminds me of when I got my first baby. (Human baby I mean, as in first child.)

She was nine months old at the time, and also sick. I got pooped on (even with her diaper on), peed on, and puked on, all in the first two weeks. Numerous times! What an introduction to motherhood, let me tell ya.

When my youngest sister was an infant, we took her to the doctor because she had the croup. My mom got up to the reception area and gave her to me to hold. I was 10-1/2.
She peed all over me. She was about 3 months old.
So, I'm used to it, although I don't have kids of my own.
I felt bad for the cat. She got freaked out somehow, some altercation with our other cat or something. We actually have no idea what transpired. The end result, however, was she went into hiding and he couldn't get her out. When I came home, I did (she trusts me more) but it was evident her fur smelled of urine, it was sticky and then I felt a lump on her backside. Which was the poop.
Had to bathe her, might have been her first one ever for all I know.
Was a crazy night.

Happy early Rez Day Mo!

I don't know if we'll be home. First, Ghosty's daughter was supposed to be visiting and that's still up in the air. Also, if she doesn't come, we were invited to go see my youngest two nieces dance competition which starts at 4:30 pm our time and runs for several hours.

Not sure yet if we're going or not, depends on the weather.

If we don't see you have a fantastic party!

Oh I'm sure it is FILLED with them. My sister isn't one of those thankfully, but my other sister, who goes to a lot of them to watch our nieces, has told me it's a fest of crazy moms.

I've never actually gone to any of their recitals/competitions because she lives practically at the tip of NJ - near Cape May. Just too damn far to travel for these kinds of things but this one happens to be occurring not too far from our home.

Hey did y'all know there's a delivery service inworld? (No, I'm not talking about the Marketplace. )

There's a store, cleverly called "Special Delivery", and you can arrange to have someone deliver a gift to someone's door.

I had flowers delivered last night.

I gather you can choose to have either a UPS-type delivery person, or someone who looks like a bell hop.

I think that's a genius idea. You can also give them something to deliver...you don't have to buy the flowers/gift from the shop.

Love Hastings and Gabriele Graves... They're "re newbies" too... Haven't logged in for two or three years. Good to see them!
OMG! I've missed Gabriele lots!

Nice to see Gabriele logging in again. Well, whenever I see any of the names I used to know pop up in group chat. Love's not a "re newbies" though (I should know, living on her land and other reasons, and stuff. *nods*).

Don't mind me, I'm just using materials on my desktop "standalone" grid...

So, "materials" are just more and better bump maps?

As far as I can figure out
...bear in mind my example was shitty because I barely understand ,and don't know how to use them well enough to show them off effectively.

I saw some very awesome examples in the thread in SLU:

"Sort of"

Normal Maps:Bump Maps::Advanced Lighting:"legacy" SL lighting.

A Normal Map does a lot of the same thing as a bump map, but while a bump map is very simply making a very simple depth effect, normal mapping is making a depth affect that is influenced by lighting and shadow. You are not stuck to the specific and limited effects presented, and upload your own normal maps where you can specify the simulated depths.

Likewise, a Specular Map is doing the same for shiny. Rather than None+three overall levels of shiny, you get to determine what parts of an item are how shiny, and to what level of shiny.
