Default Question about land textures

This is a hypothetical sort of thing--

If I were to have a whole sim and was able to terraform land based off a heightmap image, would it be possible to have that entire sim's land texture be based off a single 1024x1024 image, or is it PURELY based on some sort of algorithm that when the land is at X height, display Y texture?

The whole InWorldz thing has me intrigued with the nice prices they have for land--I could probably afford having a whole sim in InWorldz (but I can't really do it unless I was to no longer have the land I have in Second Life, and I won't give that up unless Linden Labs does something SO incredibly stupid that everyone [well, not EVERYONE, but you know what I mean] moves over to InWorlds.)

There is a concept for a terrain that I've had for quite a while that I'd love to find a way to implement something *similar* to it as a whole sim.

This next pic--I'd love to have a giant WORKING chessboard...

Is something like this possible?

EDIT: These are the actual files used (modified so it's not a tiled-neverending map)

A pair of pants. Oh yeah, and a shirt. And boots. And stuff.
