Old friend made reference to the following on facebook, I never heard of it before now.

Matt's cousin's husband is an avid Jayhawks fan. Today's his birthday. So yesterday I made this for him:

It kind of goes along w/ last year's bedroom window replacement, where I repurposed an old sash into a fixed double-paned window here at the Little Heap:

I learned on that project not to skimp on the paints, which is why the newer one is so much brighter/stronger.

Hoping to do a number of other, less-complicated pieces for the kitchen and bedroom [casements, for the breeze]. But that comes AFTER some other projects we have to do first.

On the easel now: Front Street, New Paltz. Started several years ago, never finished till now. Still have a bit to do on it, but it's approaching doneness.

Updating my website, i realized that most of my paintings don't read very well in the smaller size. For instance, when you click on the actual gif for the "Winter Trees on the Durham Road", you get a better-sized file, more details [brush strokes, textures, etc]:

http://www.jenhath.com/images/wintertrees.gif
http://www.jenhath.com/images/smcharcow1gif.gif

But the file sizes for that kind of detail are problematic for load times...
http://www.jenhath.com/Cows.html

So... I have to figure something else out.

Although it is impossible to choose a favorite, I must say that "Winter Trees on Durham Road" may be it.

Jen, the most common trick is to have 2 versions of your picture.

One is a thumbnail size for the page to load quickly and also for people to click on to see the full size image.

eta: make sure you have something between your title tags: like <title>Jen Hathaway Art and Design - Cows</title> - that helps with search engine results.

The HTML looks really complicated for a page like that.
There's a "sound" described in there, but I don't hear anything.
And it looks like you have a ton of text sizes claimed in the CSS, but only use one or two on the page?

Personally, I'd just blame the Papyrus font... but that's just my hatred of that font coming out.

But seriously, it looks like the HTML could be simplified a lot... maybe that's the issue?
I could be entirely wrong and probably am, but that's what my n00b-eye sees.

Yeah, that would make sense.
The page definitely doesn't load as fast as it should for what's on that page.

Jen, I know it looks like what you've done, but what's actually happening is you're embedding the full size image on the page, but making the page display it small.

For example, for your cow drawing, you have one image:

<img width="367" height="275" border="0" title="" alt="" src="images/smcharcow1gif.gif">

That image is 3968x2976 pixels - which is very big.

What you need to do is use your software to save two smaller versions of it (367x275 px and 100x74px) and name them smcharcow1gif_small.gif and smcharcow1gif_smaller.gif (or however you want to name them), and put those in your img tags on Cow.html.

What you want to keep, then, is the a tag.

So for example,

Code:
<a target="_blank" href="images/smcharcow1gif.gif">
<img width="100" height="74" border="0"
style="position: relative; left: 3px; top: 3px;"
src="images/smcharcow1gif.gif">
</a>
Would become

Code:
<a target="_blank" href="images/smcharcow1gif.gif">
<img width="100" height="74" border="0"
style="position: relative; left: 3px; top: 3px;"
src="images/smcharcow1gif_smaller.gif">
</a>
You'll want to do the same with your winter trees. Both those two images add up to 8.4 MB in downloads for your page.

"Hathor" [the Egyptian goddess of love, often depicted as a cow]. This beautiful dun cow lives in a meadow full of flowers to the south of Ramona. The way she calmly looks me in the eye gives me goosebumps. 20"wx 18"h, 08/06/11, charcoals on acid-free paper. $100

Matt kind of threw this at me out of left field last week- up until last week, Matt and the guys were going to buy their boss a boombox for the jobsite. But then he went and bought one for himself.

Well, a few months ago he'd described his "Ideal Tattoo" to Matt. So suddenly last week, I was asked to toss this together for him [from the dark, blurry photos you see in the background]:

Here's the design without the background:

And here it is as a line drawing:

Currently on the easel:

"Cloud Moving over the Land"- unfortunately, the camera hates the contrasts, so I'll do the cloud in a separate photo. Oils, 40"x30" [not finished]

Thanks, Ayu.

The trees one is done, and the "cloud" one is close... I'm letting it stew in my subconscious for a bit lest I over-work it.

I haven't put the "shazam" into the windmill piece yet. But I know what I'll be doing to it [bwah ha ha ha ha!]... Will post it here when finished, of course.

thanks again. Feedback is good [which is why I post these even when they're unfinished.]

I like the windmill the best. I personally think it needs a cow, but it's sunny and happy as is.

And...

The Windmill painting is SOLD. The "Cloud Moving Over the Land" painting is bespoken [casually sold- right of first refusal]. I sold a couple of the smaller paper pieces already as well. My series is kind of shot, at this point....

I just messaged the curator in Wichita that it's not looking good for a show, now, but that if I can manage to get some more work done I won't show it to anybody before her.

As I've been saying all morning: ALL artists should have these problems!!

My heartfelt thanks to You Know Who You Are.
