Firstly, what are you smoking? It's some good shit!

I'm not sure I understand the real/non-real philosophy. It seems like an excuse to not have to make a decision either way, but that's ok, none of us have to do anything, after all. So let me ask: Do you think Jesus was a living breathing man, a son of a god, the only god, who could do what we would now describe as 'magic', or is Jesus just a metaphorical catch all description for a collection of principles - an imagined 'embodiment' of them, so to speak?
OK, where were we.

Yes, I think Jesus was a living, breathing man, and the son of a carpenter (as I learned in the Unitarian church). And also son of God,the only God. No, I don't think he could do anything I would call magic.

Not a metaphorical catch-all description for a collection of principles, but a real man who personified and espoused those principles.

Quote:
You are aware that people actually do emulate the Christ, without calling themselves Christians. I mean, some people (most people?) are generally decent and kind, generally generous, generally tolerant, without having to drink a bottled up and branded version of those things. They just 'are' by default, and do these things due to natural or learned mechanisms and a sense of what is right and wrong.
Yes.

As for me, I drink nothing against my will, and don't place a requirement on things religious to not ever have any sort of a brand, when all other things in the world do.

Religion is there to help us. I picked the religion (the "brand") which would most help me; which most closely paralleled my own views.

Quote:
Why do you feel following the 'idea' of Christ, or the 'reality' of Christ is the best way to ensure you, yourself, are a good person? Does the looming threat of judgement by a higher power affect your choices in life at all, or does it all come naturally anyway? Do you second guess yourself, I mean? Do you answer yourself twice when presented with something - once naturally as yourself, and once as 'what would Jesus do?' Does the latter ever overpower the former, if so?
No, the looming threat of judgment by a higher power doesn't scare me, nor does the looming threat of judgment of myself by myself in a more advanced and enlightened state of consciousness scare me.

Because there is forgiveness in all of it. Forgiveness from God, forgiveness from ourselves.

I don't operate out of fear of God. I operate out of love of God (and of Jesus), and mostly out of basking in his love of all his creatures, including myself.

Not out of fear of punishment.

I'm not religious for the primary reason that it is the best way to ensure I will be a good person. I'm religious for the reason that I wish to encompass and participate in all the wonders of the universe, and have a relationship with the entity/entities greater than ourselves, who are not accessible through non-spiritual means.

It's a learning/growing thing, more than a "being good" thing.

No, there is no second-guessing. Always I want to do the right thing; that which God would want me to do. But I don't have to "re-learn" that thing with every thing I do.

That would be like the non-religious person you mentioned, supposedly putting up what he would "really" do versus what he thinks he *should* do. Which would assume that he wasn't very strong in his idea of what those "shoulds" should be in the first place, if he had to check it against something.

Most of us have a pretty good idea what we should or should not do, with or without religion.

Quote:
I suppose what I'm getting at is: Is belief in the as yet unproven, mystical, magical, mythical, miraculous elements of your rituals and practices really necessary in order for you to act according to what you see as Good or Bad? Or could you imagine it being an easily replaceable vehicle to achieve the same end? Is magic and this particular myth an absolute, undoubtable reality for you and you'd never even entertain the thought of them not being true, or are these things just a means to an end?
First off, it is proven to me. Your experiences have not been mine. It is unproven to you; it is proven to me.

So that right there makes a huge difference.

In any case, no, it would not make any difference intellectually. For example, my brother was an atheist, but most certainly attempted to live a good life.

There is no "magic" - not sure why you keep calling it that. There is only what is.

As for "myths," the other myths of great meaning (outside of Christianity) are also realer than real in the same way I described in an earlier post, for those who adhere to them and see the world in that way. They are what is, also.

I used to entertain the thought that these real unreal things weren't true. I no longer do.

No, I wouldn't want to substitute some other vehicle at this point.

Ishina, i'm really sorry you went through all this. Thank you for sharing it though. I dont have anything to help other than i might be able to get you in touch with Greata from the blog you quoted in the OP. I havent talked to her in probably 10 years but I'm sure she'd take my call.

Hey Forest that would be kinda cool, I think. Tell her I'm a fan and appreciate her voice if you get chance. Much love and respect to her.

I'm not sure what could be said though, just wanna make it clear that I'm not asking for help or sympathy from anyone really. Or maybe I am, dunno. But yeah, cool to chat to someone I can relate to. No pressure or anything though. Drag her to the forums! She sounds like a cool chick. Actually, don't drag her here, she might think I'm a cunt lol

If you are atheist it is better to choose the best religion why?
Because if nothing happen after your death you will loose nothing but if if if!

My advice is to turn Catholic short from your dead why?
Because they have the confession, and confession is the *C Cleaner of the catholic church and it will be for you a lot of megabytes to erase, yes Unregistered

We had to send it up to the booth for review because the referees on the field couldn't make heads or tails of the preceding sentence.

Official reclamation from the angels'team presented to the supreme head referee, the one with the gold circle over his white hat.
Reason. Some devils players fall to provocations, judgment corrected and TD accepted.
6 points +1 extra one for the angels.
