My 2000 Squier Affinity Strat, "Barney," which Lecktor gave me:

Barney is partly dissasembled right now getting new machine heads, so I am currently playing a Fender Starcaster that we bought our daughter for Christmas (this is a stock photo):

I just got my dream rig yesterday for my early birthday present!

To go along with it, I also picked up a VOX ToneLab tube cab emulator, as well as an original Crybaby Wah. Played last night until my fingers were raw...gonna do the same again tonight.

This post requires video, screw pics. See if you can beat P2 to the punch. He's owed me vid for well over a year now is it P2? Huh?

Grats on the Strat mang, that is a schweet axe.

A year and a half, actually. Sis-in-law got a Flip cam for Christmas and daughter got a nice Fuji camera that also does video, so I am "sans" excuse -- (see what I did there? Huh? Huh?)

(Rummages around for a backing track)

Thanks, mang!

I have to say, this thing is not only the best guitar I've ever played, it is the best Strat. The SI switch gives you 10 different options for pickup selection, with the pickups being either in series or parallel. In the "off" position, you get clear bell tones. Pushed "on", it sounds like melting butter. The push/push button gives you an eleventh option, only humbucker, no volume/tone, for lead. I'm still working on getting my chops back, since I haven't had a chance to play for a bit, but working back up to shape is so much easier on this guitar than my other. (It's closer to a Les Paul setup...not as comfortable, longer scale with bigger stretches, and strumming it is like trying to saw down a redwood with a butter knife.)

Needless to say, I love this thing. Still working on a name, but that just comes with time. (That's something I've never understood about people who have crap-tons of guitars. How can they possibly remember all their names?)

As for the video, I'll get there eventually. (Not giving you a date, though. ) I still owe my brother video of his nephew, and am trying to figure out what the hell I'm doing with our new video camera. Plus, as I say, I'm mad out of shape, and don't want to be lambasted for playing like a hack.

Looking at the possibility of getting a LP-style axe for a late Christmas present when tax money comes in. I can't stand the idea of paying $2000 or so for a Gibson, though -- and from what I hear, their quality control is not the best these days... so I had been thinking in terms of an Epiphone, but I was having trouble deciding whether I wanted one with hhumbuckers or P-90s.

Then I saw Gibson's recent model called the Les Paul BFG... don't know if you've seen one; it has a hummer in the bridge position and a P-90 in the bridge position. They look cool, too, with an unusual, rough-finished look to 'em. Stiill too spendy, though, at $1600 or so.

Then I discovered Xaviere guitars and fell in love with this beauty:

And the best part? Only $249. They come in aged mahogany (shown), cherry, ebony and gold-top. Hard to decide, they're all gorgeous.

Most of the reviews I've read of their instruments are very positive, although there have been a few that said they weren't that good.

Anybody have any experience with one of these?

That guitar looks like the bare model of my DeArmond. They stopped making them after only a couple of years, but they were absolutely phenomenal instruments for the price, across the model line. (I think they ran from around $200 to around $900 if I remember. The HB was the most expensive.) The construction and setup of this looks very similar.

There were a lot of people who shit on those guitars (DeArmond) over the years. They were mostly guys who own a $4K Les Paul and can't play it, but I'm convinced that it's just like any other instrument...you can take a $60 guitar and make it sound beautiful. It's not the instrument, it's the player and their imagination. Boring people make shitty music, and couldn't play a bean can with a spoon, even if you were pounding the rhythm on their forehead with a shovel.

Anyhoo, I digress. Those things look outstanding. You honestly can't go wrong. Even if it ends up being a case where the pickups aren't up to the job, you can always eBay something on the cheap and get all surgical on that thang.

That's kinda what I figured. After all, I could get one of these in all four colors and STILL pay $600 less than what one Gibson BFG would cost.

Uh, not that I am gonna buy four of 'em, Sans...

At least not yet.

And I agree with the part about being able to make great music on inexpensive instruments. I <3 my Squier Strat and have zero desire for a "real" Fender. I can remember in the late 70s when I had a Hondo II copy of a Les Paul Custom, which is probably the cheapest plywood crap guitar you could get, and I played the hell outta that thing.
