So this thing is about the size of an SUV and it has a nuclear reactor?

Where's mine?

The MSL has 4.8kg of plutonium in it. To put that into perspective, Fat Man, the bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki had only 6.2kg of plutonium in it.

I don't know why those number make me say "wow", but they do.

Kinda nice to see plutonium being used to something other than bombs though.

Stolen from twitter:
Where is Mars Curiosity? Follow MSL down to the ground of the red planet with this computer simulation: http://eyes.nasa.gov/
This is pretty cool, once it loads it's a real time simulator for where Mars Curiosity is and what it's doing.

Live broadcast from NASA can be seen here:

NASA Education Administrator, Leland Melvin (with whom I had the pleasure of doing a virtual worlds project) and Will-I-Am from the Black Eyed Peas (haven't had the pleasure) are covering landing!

I have to stop the stream to post here and then restart it when I switch back to ustream; so once we hit re-entry, it's radio silence from me until the landing is confirmed.

It's actually possible, although no one thinks it's likely, that we might not get confirmation of successful landing for up to three days.

That would suck.

I have both streams running, cuz I'm like that, and it looks like between the two of them that something like 85,000 viewers are watching live.

Our Mars-observing satellites have reported that they are in position. So we should know relatively quickly how things went.

Okay, I'm onto the stream now. Back in about 25 minutes!!!

I remember the landing of the first Mars lander--I was in college. I caught sight of the news on a newspaper stand, from the bus I was on, on my way to dance class, I think. I started crying. Again, tonight. We are pretty cool, we humans. We are.
