Skyrim is a little more organic in that you just do what you want and you raise in skill. Kinda like UO. It honestly makes more sense.

Well there's the thing. Yeah I've made custom classes in Morrowind, but you still picked major and minor skills that you started off being good at ("good" here meaning "slightly better than the baseline").

Since you presumably begin this game when your character is in the middle of being an adult, to me it seems logical that your character would have at least a couple of things that he's better at than everything else one can possibly do, or what has he been doing with his life before the game? I mean, you would figure that, say, a Nord barbarian would start off already a little physically stronger than the average joe and already knowing a little something about working with a sword or axe for example.

But, this isn't the kind of problem that would bother me during the game. Starting from scratch is fine too.

I like, as I think Jorus mentioned, that being a pure mage in this game is actually doable. Hopefully archery is given a fair shake too. In the past when I haven't been a custom class, I always tended to "nightblade".

I'm a sucker for the Argonians and their ability to breathe under water.
The resistance to disease doesn't hurt either.

Of course, I never did end up playing again and am still a low level 2. :/

Having finished NaNoWriMo, I can now finally play Skyrim knowing that my conscience is clear.

So far, so good. It took me a minute to adjust to the controls (too much Mass Effect), and I do wish the look of their characters was a bit cleaner (again, too much Mass Effect), but so far, so good.

Only a few hours in at this point, but lovin' it.

Got my hands on it...

Had to remap the controls to the same places as Oblivion.

So do we have to have played the previous elderscroll games to understand Skyrim? I just saw a preview for it, and it looks awesome!

No, they all sit as standalone games. The only thing you really need to understand is Dragons have been wiped out almost entirely for thousands of years.

Most of the previous games are actually chronicled in various books found throughout the game (Read the books).

My only spoiler is going to be that really the Imperials aren't bad guys, they just tend to be a hair bureaucratic and stupid. If you played fallout they are basically the NCR (only they predate the NCR by a fair bit).

Daedra and Aedra are basically gods or demons depending on your outlook (The Aedra have fathered races, the Daedra haven't, otherwise they are damn near identical in power and scope), and the High Elves are fucking Nazi's. Literally.

In fact, here's plot summaries from previous games: Note, when you see things like "The eternal champion, the nevarine, the hero of whatever or someshit", that's probably the player

Stolen from Teswiki and slightly modified to delete some faggots self insertion. Also I'm only doing the core games, I'm ignoring redguard adventures and battlespire.

In fact, here's plot summaries from previous games: Note, when you see things like "The eternal champion, the nevarine, the hero of whatever or someshit", that's probably the player

Stolen from Teswiki

Arena (1994)
Quote:
The Emperor is summoned by Imperial Battle Mage Jagar Tharn on rumors of treachery. But Jagar Tharn betrays him, and transports the Emperor into another dimension. Tharn's apprentice, Ria Silmane, witnesses his treachery and tries to warn the Elder Council, but is killed by Tharn, her corporeal form being destroyed by the Staff of Chaos.
Jagar Tharn takes the throne.
Xell KhaarAdded by Xell Khaar
After months of planning, Jagar Tharn transforms himself into the image of the Emperor and takes the throne, summoning demon minions and transforming them into the Emperor's Guard, and sending the head of the Imperial Guard, The Eternal Champion, into the Imperial Dungeons to die. Ria Silmane becomes an incorporeal form through the use of magic and remains in this world so that she can warn The Eternal Champion of Jagar Tharn's treachery and that the Emperor is actually Jagar Tharn in disguise. Ria creates a key for The Eternal Champion to escape his cell and teleports him to another province through the use of a Shift Gate. The only way to stop Jagar Tharn is to obtain the Staff of Chaos, in which he holds his lifeforce. But the staff has been split by Tharn into 8 pieces and scattered across Tamriel. Since The Eternal Champion is the only one that Ria Silmane could trust, it's up to him to reassemble the pieces and defeat Jagar Tharn.

Finally, in 3E 399, after a long quest to reassemble the pieces, which were hidden at the bottom of a dungeon in each province, The Eternal Champion finally reassembles the Staff of Chaos. However, Jagar Tharn was not defeated like he and Ria Silmane had hoped. There was one final piece in the Imperial Palace, the jewel to the Staff, which would make it complete. The Eternal Champion fought his way through the Imperial Palace to the basement level where he fought with Tharn. The Eternal Champion touched the staff to the jewel and they formed instantly, melting Jagar Tharn. The staff creates a portal automatically to the dimension in which the Emperor and General Warhaft are being held. They fall out of the portal and thank The Eternal Champion. The Emperor makes him the Eternal Champion as a reward for saving them and defeating Jagar Tharn.
Daggerfall (1996)

Quote:
Daggerfall is a city in the Breton homeland of High Rock. The player is sent here at the personal request of the Emperor. He wants the player to do two things. First, the player must free the ghost of the late King Lysandus from his earthly shackles. Secondly, the player must retrieve a letter from the Emperor to a Blades spy in the court of Daggerfall. The letter reveals that Lysandus' mother, Nulfaga, knows the location of the Mantella, the key to resurrecting the first Numidium. The Emperor wants his spy to force Nulfaga into revealing the location of the Mantella so that the Blades can finish the reconstruction of the Numidium. Through a series of mishaps and confusions the letter fell into the hands of an orc by the name of Gortworg. Gortworg, not knowing what the Mantella is, consults Mannimarco, the King of Worms (the leader of the Necromancers). During this time, the Underking who originally destroyed the first Numidium because of its misuse by Tiber Septim, is recuperating deep within a tomb of High Rock, after expending so much energy destroying it the first time. In order for the player to give the Mantella to anyone, the player must kill king Lysandus' murderer and put his ghost to rest. After accomplishing this, the power of the Mantella restores the Underking's power.
Endings

Daggerfall has six different endings:

If the player activates the Mantella himself while in possession of the Totem (the controlling device of the Numidium), the Numidium will slay the player, go out of control, and be destroyed by Imperial forces.
If the player gives the Mantella to the Underking, he absorbs its power, passes into eternal rest, and creates a large "magicka free" area around himself.
If Gortworg is victorious, he uses the Numidium to destroy the Imperial forces and the "Bay Kings," the "rulers" of the several provinces of the Iliac Bay. The Underking arrives shortly thereafter to destroy the first Numidium once and for all, losing his own life in the process. Gortworg then succeeds in creating Orsinium, a kingdom of Orcs.
If the Blades are victorious, they succeed in recreating the first Numidium and use it to defeat the Bay Kings, defeat the orcs, and to unite all the provinces of Tamriel under the Empire once again.
If one of the Bay Kings wins (any of them), they use the first Numidium to defeat all the other kings just before the Underking destroys it and himself.
If the King of Worms receives the Mantella, he uses it to make himself a god.

Continuity

Since Daggerfall had six very different endings, the writers of the Elder Scrolls series had to be creative when writing the sequel. It is revealed in books in the sequel Morrowind that at the end of Daggerfall, an event known as "The Warp of the West" or "The Miracle of Peace" had occurred, that is, due to the fact that in order to retrieve the Mantella, the player must enter Aetherius (a spirit realm), a disruption was caused in spacetime, due to the fact that one of the very Gods of Aetherius (Akatosh) is the dead god of time. Therefore, all of the endings of Daggerfall occurred simultaneously: the PC is slain by the Numidium, either the Kingdom Betony, Sentinel or Wayrest is victorious, the "Bay Kings" and the Imperial forces are defeated by the Orcs, who then create their own kingdom of Orsinium, all of Tamriel is united under the Empire once again, the King of Worms becomes a god and another incarnation becomes the leader of the Order of the Black Worm, and the Underking is reunited with his heart.
Morrowind (2002):

Despite being one of the best games in the series this one has the shittiest plot descriptors on the site. This is still sold on the shelf despite being damn near 10 years old. That should speak for itself. Anywho...

Quote:
In the beginning cinematic, a sentence can be seen. "Many Fall, But One Remains". The story begins with a prophecy that a great hero, long dead, named Nerevar would be reincarnated to unite and liberate the tribe of Dark Elves (Dunmer). The player assumes the role of this person of legend, but it is an open-play game, meaning that they do not have to follow the story line if they do not wish to; they may do anything they wish. The player can follow the main quest for honor and glory, become a nimble thief and steal for a living, join the mages' guild and become the archmage, be an assassin and sneak through the shadows, become a noble Great House member, and even turn into a vampire.
I honestly don't know why the big dumb fuckwit wrote all this stuff, because LOL you can pretty much do whatever the hell you want in all of the elder scrolls games... I mean in daggerfall I was wanted in one province because once a week I'd wander in, kill all the guards, loot all the shops and then put everything in a cart and haul it to the next province over and sell it for beau-coup money. I murdered a priest and stuffed his body in a nearby moat because he was being loud. You buy this you will know exactly what priest I'm talkin about there buddy....

Anywho:

Oblivion:

Oh well crap no one wrote a synopsis on this one. FINE. In a nutshell because ugh...

The emperors of tamriel up to this point were all descendants of Talos, which is the name of the first emperor who actually ascended to godhood (Aedra), there is some pact/whatever that says as long as the emperor of the bloodline is in possession of his mystical doo-dad and the dragonfires are lit, the planes to oblivion will be closed and locked and by and large big piles of daedra and rape fetishists can't roam the land. Well he gets stabbed in front of you, hands you his mystical doo-dad and tells you to find his illegitimate son. All sorts of openworld malarky happens, I murder some woman for a sword, a big giant bad guy named Mehrunes Dagon comes through a gate, the emperors son turns into an avatar of a god and kicks him the fuck right back out, and the last emperor is dead. Everything goes to shit. 200 years later: Skyrim.

Do you see how disjointed that is? Trust me, you can pretty much ignore the plot and enjoy watching a giant punt a bandit across the map. And honestly the plot isn't bad, it's just an open world game so a lot of how things happen is entirely up to you.

I mean honestly you can turn Skyrim into a silverware theft simulator. Literally jack every fork you see and put it in your house. Then quit playing. I spent a lot of time decorating my house that no one would ever see.

I bought a horse. Rode it around a bit.

I got to a crossroads and hopped off to use that clairvoyance spell, and it ran off back the way we came about 30 feet. I went after it and found it had mysteriously dropped dead.

No more horses.

I did enjoy riding my horse around while my companion had to run her little heart out to keep up with me.

Now a dragon dropped dead in front of me.

I left the Arch Mage's quarters building and there was a dragon right in front of me. It immediately died and I took its soul. There was nobody around and I did nothing.

Maybe I smell?

The mages college is a popular place for suicidal dragons. Had you stepped out a minute earlier you'd have likely seen the wizards blasting it.

So, I was travelling through Riverun, and a dragon attacked.

Killed the dragon beautifully with the Axe of Whiterun... BAM finishing move (should have screencapped it).

I'm feeling all chuffed with myself, and go to the blacksmiths to sell of some loot I was lugging...

no sign of him.

then i find the daughter at the forge, saying "someday I'll make my own sword", then i find the wife talking about how much she misses him, and what a great father he was.

I searched the village and the river till after nightfall.

never found his body.

Poor Altor

Well, it's all Trout's fault. We got an XBox/Kinect for us for Christmas. Our first game is Forza driving game, so that we can both play, but I'm pretty sure that our next game will be either Skyrim, Rise of Nightmares, or Fighters Uncaged.

I want to know how to pronounce, "draugr".

Matt maintains that it's something like "droo ghr".

Actually, maybe I want Luc to make an mpeg, saying "FOOKIN DRAUGRS". Loudly. For Christmas...?

...Because I'm busy with the stupid bossdragon castle place with the FOOKIN DRAUGRS and don't know how to say that out loud. [and btw is anybody else archmaging it up in their penthouse yet?]

My account has been hacked. My game is gone from my computer, completely gone. AND all of the backups for my computer itself have disappeared as well [went to do a system restore, and the 5+ year old machine told me there were no restore points on it].

Meanwhile, there's about half the memory on the two drives taken up, and the steam account tells me that I've played for 131 hours [not possible] and that the last time I played was today [not true].

PISSED doesn't begin to cover it.

Have you been using the Steam forums?

The steam forums are regularly attacked by hackers it seems. Either don't use them at all, or else make sure your forum password is not the same as your Steam account password (if that's possible).

Otherwise, it's possible that your computer itself was hacked, rather than just Steam, and they got your password that way. Check all your passworded accounts - mail, forums, everything. Change them all just to be safe.

Can you play with other people or is it strictly a single player kind of game?
It seems like it is a single player game, is that correct?

"Some like taking friends on adventures. M'aiq thinks being alone is better. Less arguing about splitting treasure."

Bethesda always ships out a slightly modified copy of their in house world creation kit for all players to download and use for 100% free. Because of this the games always have huge mod communities that do everything from add new quests/factions to the game, to completely create a new game from the engine.

In Morrowind I made my own house, complete with armor dummies that I could put full sets of armor on for display. The imperial legion issued armor that wasn't very good for certain classes so I modded in an Imperial Signet ring that still identified you as a faction member.

In Oblivion people added ridable dragons (Despite dragons not even being in the base game), magic carpets, flintlock pistols, castles, tits, floppy dongs, and one guy created a whole new game from the base engine (this took a couple of years).

Bethesda keeps the textures low since it's in an open world, this allows most computers to play it. For people with supercomputers some folks have lovingly crafted high rez texture packs.

One guy reworked the entire combat system to be twice as dynamic, another guy made it so any arrow that hit a body could be retrieved from the body.

Between mods, add ons, total conversions etc you can add entire years of playtime to just about any game in this series.

I was still playing modded oblivion up until Skyrim released. I'd say my 50 bucks was well spent considering I probably have thousands of hours of playtime.

Well, I tried the hijackthis, but my freaking Vista wouldn't let me "run as administrator" for the "hosts" files, so I don't know what's going on with that. I did use my avg as well. Also have a chit in with steam, waiting to hear. Also wondering if my laggy-assed computer somehow registered as two users this afternoon when I tried to log on, and that got my account shut down [something that just occurred to me]. But one would think having the identical IP might preclude that...

ANYWAY. :P I've been wrestling with this mess all afternoon. Turned off the ASP.Machine account except for a couple of hours a day, cleaned up my puter for the sake of doing so, and created a restore point because there was none, changed passwords on a bunch of stuff [including paypal and bank], and etc. BLEAH.

Ok, yesterday's wrestling took up so much of my time that I didn't get back on the puter till this afternoon sometime, and didn't have the heart to deal with the mess. However before I gave up, gnashing my teeth, yesterday, I did manage to put this onto my ticket:

And I found out the tesv.exe thing is a problem for a great many people. There was also a mention somewhere about a program that would remedy that, with more fiddling, but I can't find my damn unzip program [because my brains are not functioning properly lately- I get seriously fuzzed up- and the fiddling would probably screw me up too]. So I couldn't fix it. So I came here in the hopes that my favorite Nord in Rusty Armor might be willing to toss me a bone. Or some wraith-teeth, or something...

Got any quicker fixes? The steam people seem to have evaporated- no responses yet.

I am on my way to bed- been a very long day/night. Matt installed new vid card and cpu for me today, then we had dinner and some telly while I fixed his back and shoulder, and now I'm toast and couldn't do the job if I tried. But thank you so much for those links- I don't have the brains to hunt through those fora/databases these days- brain fog has been severe.

I'll hit this in the morning. Thanks forever!

Just finished attempting a repair... will check it out momentarily.

Meanwhile, Steam has contacted me re. potential hack-dom and demanded a photograph of my key # with the handwritten service ticket number on the label- typical hostage situation! and so I just finished that [lest the fuckers now suspend my stupidassed 'account", too].

I AM SO FUCKING PISSED.

I want a fucking video game that you stick into the drawer and PLAY. End of fucking hassles. JEEBUS CRIPES.
