Why did you pick your Second Life name?

Default Why did you pick your Second Life name?

I picked mine because I'm always Cocoanut. I'm always Cocoanut because when I was first thinking about a name (for the Sims Online), I thought - an avatar isn't QUITE human, really, so an obviously not quite human name would be good.

So I thought fruits would be nice and quirky. I spelled Cocoanut with an "a" because I couldn't quite remember how it was spelled, and you know once you put it in, well, then you are stuck with it.

(Later, I looked it up and found out that at least it is the secondary spelling, with an a.)

Then when I got on SL, I had a list of names to choose from. I wanted something also kinda whimsical, and "Koala" was on it, so I picked that.

For the first year or so, people kept thinking I came from Australia, but nobody has thought that for a long time now.

So . . . how did you come to choose your SL name?

My second life name was a joke at first, I just put something out so I could get online and check out SL to see if i liked it. Now it is so me I could never change it.

I made up "Stankleberry" for another board that I post on back in 2001. Then when I joined SL I decided to use that penis. I think I chose the last name because it started with an S, and it sounded nice with my dumb first name.

I picked Vaelissa because it's what I always go by, I'm the only one around...anywhere. This goes for other forums, MMOs, etc., you name it.

As for Cortes, it was the least crappy option at the time. Unfortunately, the only other Cortes people I've ever seen have always been ugly horny newbie men.

Besides the name is kewl
As is my alt Winter Woods, though careful because she is the wild one - no really I mean that and that is why she has to be locked away for the safety of the public.

23rdDjin because that's what i'd been known as for five years before stumbling onto SL. i chose Negulesco (though few here know that part of the name just due to how i signed up) because it had that Romany sound to it, like, say, if the first name were Radu...

Prior to joining SL, I had combined two of my social groups in RL, into one.. People I knew through the SCA knew me as "Winter" (I never got around to picking a last name, previously I had been Paige O'Donnell, but Clan O'Donnell folded when our house leader passed away), people who knew me through Mechwarrior knew me by my callsign, "Arcadia". So I'd been using "Winter Arcadia" for several months.

Unfortunately, when I joined SL, "Arcadia" wasn't one of the allowed last names.. and so, having already typed in "Winter" I began looking for a last name that would work. I'd been watching a lot of Season One episodes from "The Venture Brothers".. and when I saw "Ventura" I misread it, and thought it said Venture, so I snagged it.. the "a" kinda grew on me though.

Kind of a boring story.. but you did ask.

I have been Amaranthim for longer than I have lived with my gven name actually- from the first time I ever needed an on-line name, I don't recall for what - and lke Vaelissa, I am the only one - SL gave me Talon and I like it. SL has also given me a side unterest- the whole alt name thing. have ended up with several alts, just 'cause the names are cool.

For the "Best names in SL" thread, though i did not post it there, I have two i like the names a lot - On Donner and Hera Stand - those were chosen smply for the names and no other reason.

My RL first name is Kristian. Warren Ellis had posted a Ming the Merciless picture on his blog that week and I saw that the name Ming was available. I'm usually more creative with names.

My first alt, Reality Control, was because my livejournal username at the time was realitycontrol. I indulged once more in the clever name pool, and my other alts are all boringly named.

I don't cruise the new last name pools anymore. It doesn't matter. LL won't let my email address register any more accounts (I've had like, 15 over the years I've made and thrown away, which considering how many lindens i've sunk into them they SHOULD let me make more) and I have too much invested in friends and creations in SL to risk a ban.

This is my second account. My first SL account quit the winter before and after half a year, I decided to give it another try, considering the new Windlight firstlook that was coming out.... And I FORGOT MY BLOODY PASSWORD!!!! (>_<)

So, I'm ticked, making a new account, and I noticed this really ridiculous "Sideways" surname... (=_=)y

Madame Maracas is mostly a joke name & partially an accident w/a bad boyfriend and an abortive attempt at entering the oldest biz on the grid, oh and a play on her having big ta tas.

My original avie's name has the same name I had in There.com, the name was one I made up for a screenplay I wrote in Jr. High.

I've got a two alts that their names are purely jokes.

My entire starting SL was based around things i did not like and in fact hated.

- I chose a name and surname i hated
- I chose pierces i hated (nose bridge and eyebrow)
- I chose a tattoo location i have always hated (tramp stamp)
- I chose an occupation i hated (dancing)

I did not like SL when i started, it took about a week for me to like it, and by my 2nd week i started liking the pierces i put on and started to understand and actually like the things i hated after seeing them in SL and really being able to look at the pierces, meet "dancers", etc..

Exploring the things you hate can sometimes lead to liking them, LIKE PRINTESA! YAY!

But i like to explore the things that i dislike or do not understand to see if my opinions will change after being challenged and exposed to new or contrary stuff.

I LOVE my name now, and of course the pierces, and the 83 tattoo's, and if i could do any of it in RL i would.

At the time I named myself, I had just finished watching the movie version of Hesse's Sidhartha. I loved the role that Govinda had, a fellow wanderer always seeking after "Truth". There was also a dear friend in RL, Indira, whose strength and courage I had long admired. So, as she had done for her daughter, she melded her husband's and her names to make her daughter's name, I melded Govinda and Indira to make my name.

I had dropped the final "i" for a time, but when I Googled Govindra, I found that it was enormously common in India, a political family name, even. So, I restored the final "i" and became temporarily unique.

Knew it!

Grady because that is the name I played as in an online run n gun named Medal of Honor. I had belonged to a clan named Damage Incorporated but the clan folded when most of the members migrated to Battlefield. That was a PC game only at the time and I was (still am) on a Mac. When I found SL I thought that it would make me easy to indentify to any MoH clan members who came across me in SL.

Echegaray was a temporary fit of insanity. But it is at least almost unique. I only know of one other.

(No MoH clan member has ever come across me. )

I liked the last name Lunasea. Moon-ocean.

Of course, at the time I honestly didn't realize the other more obvious "lunacy" meaning. Others had to point that out to me. Duh.

As for the first name, I'd been watching "Willow" and the baby, Elora Danen (sp?) always made me smile. That name, is also a take off of my real first name - Laurie. And, I liked the alliteration involved as well.

I wanted a short first name, 'cuz all your friends end up shortening your name anyway, when typing.
I like lowercase letters too, 'cuz it's the internet!
And I was watching a documentary on Jupiter when I was creating the account, and the moon of Io is amazing, it's the closest one to Jupiter, so it's the closest one to god, lol.
Then I was super stoked to see Kukulcan available as a surname, and I've long had an affinity for ancient Meso-American cultures, and Kukulcan is the tops! He's like a feathered-Mayan-Alien-Jesus-Vision-Serpent, too awesome.
Also, I've been lucky enough to visit the Pyramid of Kukulcan at Chichen-Itza.

There are lots of other Io's in SL, just only two showed up here and SLU, strange.

OK but on a more serious note than my prior post:

I was introduced to SL after I had been sitting home for six months or more recovering from my car wreck and seven month hospitalization.

I thought "Phoenix" nicely symbolized the near-resurrection that I had pulled off. "Psaltery," I thought, went with it nicely, both because I like alliteration and because I like musical instruments.

Oh, and the "P2" thing came about... hell, I don't remember, exactly. I used to write it as if it were "P squared," with the superscript, but of course that's kinda impractical to do in text chat, so after a while it became simply "P2."

A Francophone friend also made reference once to the French term, "Pitou," which I guess means a cuddly toy kind of like a teddy bear, so there is that too.

P2

whell if you need to know. Aimee stole my avatar name so I had to come up with another one.

*just kidding*

I wrote a blog about my life in NYC during 9/11 years and at the time my pen name was Troy Vega. Troy because I was born where city of Troy used to be. Vega because that's the star that sets right over one of the major mountains facing the village my family comes from. This is an abridged version. :-)

Troy was easy when I come to SL. Vega was not in the list, Vogel was the closest thing and it sounded kind of cool so I picked it. The rest is SListory.

Interesting stories. I forgot to add, I also used the same Cocoanut name so people could find me, and several did!

There's a buncha people want us to be able to use our real names, and some seem to want us to HAVE to use our real names.

I wouldn't mind others doing it, but I sure wouldn't want to have to use my real name. Heck, I don't use my own name in real life half the time. When I was a college freshman, everybody on my dorm thought my name was "Franny," which is what I put on my door and what I called myself. (From Franny and Zooey.)

Quite simple: Marcel is my RL first name, and Flatley is the surname of that famous dancer I admire. The dancing, not the dude (how could I admire people even more arrogant then me?). Hence I became Marcel Flatley. Lord of the Chance.

I didn't put much thought into it. I just wanted to check out SL because a friend was talking about it. I'm Sarah in both lives and looking through the last names, Nerd seemed perfect for a internet dork like me. I love it though. It turned out to be a great name for my later SL business ventures because it's fun and easy to remember. Now I feel like it's as much a part of me as any other name. I have people that call me Sarah Nerd in real life. Friends, family sometimes, the people I work for now and then at the local university call me Sarah Nerd. It just stuck well and became part of my identity.

I've used Charlemagne as a handle online prior to this---I thought it sounded cool. Allen was just the the first last name that looked okay to me...

I wanted a normal-sounding name that was something like my RL name.

Sorry to be so boring!

I had just finished reading the series A Song Of Ice And Fire by George R.R. Martin when I first came up with the name, but that was a couple years prior to SL, so it was my Yahoo account name first. Sansa (Stark) is the eldest daughter of Eddard Stark, one of the main characters in the first novel in the series. Arya is his youngest daughter. Sansa + Arya.

Caligari was just the first name that halfway appealed before I got bored looking at possible last names on the sign up page.
