Oh for fuck sake YES. A million times yes.

Melisma, or the easier-to-remember "oversouling"... we now have a name for that awful practice. I was thinking about this exact topic as she was singing the anthem. I found myself wondering why she didn't just sing the fucking song, instead taking us on a 3-hour-tour of how she can one note into 20.

I hate what R&B vocals have become. The problem has been around longer than American Idol. I used to call it "Star Search" vocals. But a great R&B singer like Smokey Robinson doesn't do all that crap. I'd rather hear a far less virtuosic performance that really moves you - like Neil Young maybe.

Agree with the article, re. "oversouling".

I coined a new word:
"Melismanoma": a cancer on music.

These guys make a similar point- enjoy.
