That kinda sucks balls.

I'm also on Comcast, also in NJ.
I just checked it to see if I was hurting, but nope...

Although, I'm sure it doesn't help that you're hitting north Jersey networks.
I'm down in Ocean county which I'm guessing has less populated bandwidth.

Yeah, sucks balls and then some considering I'm on their top tier plan from last year and paying way too much as it is.

Doesn't matter where I hit, somewhere along the line I'm capped at ~32Mb/s

I don't think it's the modem
8 Bonded channels of downstream

All 8 interfaces configured for max (8 x 42.884 = 343.072), I can't find the source now but that matches something I read earlier about the max downstream speed my modem can handle (343.1 I believe).

All of which leads me to believe that our down / up stream is being capped by Comcast somewhere outside of my modem.

Hmm... have you tried any ping tests (from a command prompt window) to see if there's somewhere along the way that gets tripped up?

Nah, this feels like the issue is pretty isolated. Last time I went through the whole deal with trace routes, ping times, speed tests at various times of day and week, and the 'engineers' at Comcast either blew it all off or just had no idea what I was talking about. I still have the number for the people that finally got their crap fixed that I can call, but I'm probably going to talk to a sales rep first and see if we can get on one of the newer plans with all the shiny features like X1, cloud DVR, etc.

[ETA] A new plan also give me refreshed bitching rights with them

Good point on the refreshed bitching rights!

It may also just be your modem/router thingy.
Do you have the official Comcast/Xfinity multi-port modem?
I used to have the Comcast modem and a LinkSys router, but that became obsolete with this all-in-one that I have from them now.

Comcast's modem, my router. During my initial rounds of speed testing (for this case) the first thing I did was hook directly to the modem and run the same set of tests, all of which came back in the same 32Mbp/s range.

Even if they gave me a new modem with a built in router/switch combo, I'd still end up using my own. I don't trust that some chucklehead at Comcast wouldn't log into the admin interface on their router and give themself (or the rest of the net) access to one or more devices on my LAN. While certainly not bulletproof (I'm not naive enough to think for a moment that anyone determined couldn't get in.), but that little extra layer should be enough to keep the average idiot at Comcast from futzing about on my private network.

Right on.

It's possible it wouldn't make much of a difference anyway.

Called the cable company and told them we wanted to upgrade to the newer package. Then, like magic, all our connection issues and slow speed went away instantly. Funny how that works isn't it? Even got the bill down about $70. I think I'm just going to call sales when I have issues from now on, support couldn't even figure out what I was talking about, sales instantly fixed the issue.

Comcast sent me a letter saying that they wanted to send me a new modem for free that would increase my speed, so I figured what the heck.

It's definitely better now! (Download speed on the old modem was 29.66)
