Default In the Flesh

Just watched the first episode of "In The Flesh", a new BBC series about a young man called Keiran Walker, A PDS (partial death syndrome) sufferer who has been given medication and therapy in the aftermath of the Zombie Apocalypse, and is being rehabilitated into the community.....

Well, that's the Idea, but memories of "The Rising" are still raw, and there are armed vigilantes who murder the stabilised zombies, despite the fact that the brain eating they did as untreated PDS sufferers wasn't their fault.

Rather impressed with the first episode, it's a twist on the Zombie genre that could all to easily be fucked up, and end up as unintentional comedy, but the first episode bodes well.

I recommend this show heartily.

Some trailers, dunno if they'll be viewable outside the UK though.

The whole zombie thing has to serve as a wide-ranging metaphor in which we are working out some problem that we are dealing with in the real world. Immigration and the reaction of the natives to immigrants? The reaction to the Other?

I'm already seeing parallels with the mentally ill, and care in the community in it.

At a basic level, zombies are a pretty good enemy for a writer/producer to choose, and for the audience to be comfortable in uniting against. Like aliens or robots, they come free of class/race/gender issues. We can happily look at them as the bad guys without having to look too closely at our own prejudices. We've (luckily) moved past point where it is acceptable to paint a race or nationality (the Germans, the Russians etc) as the baddies, so this is probably the next logical step.

What sounds good about this one (haven't seen any of it so apologies if I'm off the mark) is that by integrating the zombie types with the rest of society it is turning this on its head and making us examine our own and societies ways of coping with "others". There is the concept of rehabilitation in there too, and then of course the whole question of how we deal with advances in medical science.

Intriguing.

Do you think zombism is an STD?

I found this very interesting episode! A good new view original of UK series , good choice of music.
I find it maybe too soft, you must install history to ensure that we understand what "world" is located.
A follow forward!

Just watched the second one.

This is shaping up really well...

And it's a co production with BBC America, so I dare say it WILL screen over there at some point, Oryx.

Nope

It's just the latest fad. The arts media will beat it to death like they did with the vampires which was the last major one. (pun intended)

Vengeful ghosts almost made a comeback but failed because zombies are more fun. Once zombies are passe it might go to ghosts, werewolves or witches.

I'll give the show a try as it sounds like a fresh take on the genre.

Vampires, werewolves and zombies are the first tier.
Ghosts, witches and mutants (human or otherwise) are like the second tier.

I've been thinking for awhile now... we need a new staple movie monster.
There are a few to choose from already, but none have ever been developed enough to garner a whole fad cycle.

But this show does look interesting and I'll be keeping an eye out for it's availability.

We could call the new series Made Men.

As in Frankenstein's Monster, an early prototype of Made Men.

Frankensteinian mafioso's, carrying the pun further.

Frankensteinian staff for an ad agency, to slather it on thickly. A typical output from the agency, touting shaving cream, for example: "Mmmmmm..... Taste........Gooooood!"

This makes me want to see it more.

Also, I'd start an "Invent a New Movie Monster" thread but I don't feel like I have the chutzpah to write the OP well right now.
(Or to fashion a crappy photoshop or drawing as a prop.)

If anyone else feels froggy, have at it!

We finally watched this. I must say it's a really different take on the genre and I liked it.

We also watched World War Z. It was worse than the book and the book wasn't that great.
