Default Wilderstein

Wilderstein is, well, a place.

Before:

After:

My mother is one of the people who were there helping Daisy to create the Preservation Trust and to start the work of getting it put onto the historic register, etc. My kids and I were present at Daisy's 91st birthday, at Foster's Coach House Tavern. I remember the event but not the date.

Daisy was a wonderful lady.

The place has been a big part of Mom's life- she's done a LOT of work there- for decades. She just recently finally retired from doing the work of docent-ing, well into her 70s. Most of my family cleared brush and did other work on the place. My son's 9th birthday party took place there, in the form of a treasure hunt Mom put together that wound up in the tower, where he found his presents. Both my sisters were married there- the younger 20 odd years ago before it was painted, the older just 1.5 years ago. I designed some "photometal" signs that are installed along the nature walk there. My father built some of the gazebos along the path.

So when Mom sent this along, I thought I'd share it with you. Please forgive the writer's, well, "voice"- In my experience the [way too wealthy] people living in Millbrook have a certain self-perception that colors many of my current political opinions. But the photos are great and the story is accurate.

Wow. That is seriously impressive.

Ghosty knows about the place but never has been there. I think we may have to think about a trip up to see it - both of us love seeing older homes as this. The attention to detail is overwhelming. Even the woodwork around the basement windows are highly decorated. Perfect.

His parents live sort of nearby so...perhaps.

Guess where the local kids went when we wanted to scare ourselves, ten years earlier?

Poor Daisy... the folklore amongst us ignoramuses was that she and her sister were witches. Made for a great "Boo! EEK!" thing for us, though... We'd be high [and paranoid], and would creep down the driveway just enough to see the house looming against the night sky, and somebody would say some drivel about the scary history of the place, and then the porch light would come on and we'd all "EEEEEEK!" run away. Adrenaline is a wonderful thing.

Nobody ever actually bothered them any more than that, though. But I'm sure the idiocy provided them with a few disturbed slumbers.

3 users laughed. The question is: Are they laughing with you, or at you?:

ALL "before" pictures qualify as scary stuff in some way.
