Default Cooking Apps? How to Cook Everything App - Free today

Hey folks ... I saw that the Apple App Store is celebrating their 5 year anniversary with a few paid apps available for free for a limited time.

The only one that caught my eye was the How to Cook Everything app based on NYT's columnist Mark Bittman's book. It has 2000 recipes and 400 how to illustrations and usually costs $10! I have the cookbook and it's pretty decent for both novice and experienced cooks that not only has recipes but walks you through proper techniques. I've only had a quick look at the app but it looks pretty good with handy things like built-in timers and shopping lists in the recipe.

Any other cooking apps you folks enjoy using?

I don't use cooking apps either. Well, maybe Epicurious now and then. I thought about the Mario Batali one but it didn't get great reviews for usability, although the recipes got high marks. I figured I can just put the laptop on the counter as easily

Oh yes a bunch of games but I don't really play games so not sure if they are any good.

I'm actually quite liking this app, because everything seems to be integrated well in a self contained way and I'll often read a recipe from my phone. It was well thought out because there are things like timers and techniques embedded right into the recipe. The timer thing is actually quite brilliant.

I love www.seriouseats.com but I'm not sure if they have an app. Normally I'll print out a recipe: I'd rather get goo on a piece of paper than my phone or my iPad!

Plus, a piece of paper doesn't go into sleep mode while you're trying to accomplish three things at once.

Serious Eats is my go-to site when I'm planning our weekly menu. I have printed out my fave recipes and put them in a 3-ring binder (I know, I'm old fashioned) by section to help plan. Every week I add new ones.

Although, from a different website:

I use BigOven which is free for the Android.

I'll get bored on a weeknight after work, look up some random stuff, and cook it.
It has a neat feature where you can find recipes and create "a shopping list" automatically from the recipes that you have added.

I think the last thing I made was Beef Stroganoff.

It was really good, although, the idea of putting cream cheese (yes, cream cheese, not sour cream) in the crock pot over beef sounded absolutely disgusting. It came out VERY good.

I've used the ipad. I just close the cover after I looked at what I need or put it way away from where I'm cooking

I just realized I did have a couple useful apps

Butcher - helps with all the different cuts of meat, cause I get lost

Locavore - not really cooking but foodie. I mainly use it for what's in season and what's coming in season. It does have some local seller features and some social media features but I never use the social media.

Ooh I love the idea of a butcher app so I'll have to look that one up. I'm an omnivore but I don't really eat that much meat. Something like that would be handy at the grocery store because I might not be sure what I could do with some cuts of meat.

Your post reminded me of this handy infographic

"We have a situation where 1.4 billion people in the world are overweight and obese, and at the same time one billion people worldwide go to bed ( if they have one) hungry,"
So lab-grown burger is maybe the solution for people who can not live without meat.

Studies shows that most cultured, educated and rich people are eating meat maybe just one or two times a week or less and at the same time some others think a meal without meat is not really a meal, so the future is now at the place to producing more meat, but producing Lab-grown meat,

Tout, I genuinely app concerned with obesity and diabetes but since I have no problems with either, I'll keep eating what I like. I'm only educated, not rich and arguable cultured.

No worries John, i was just talking about stats and general Earth problems, everybody is free to do or eat what he likes..

And beside i find very good if you keep your weight, most people nailed on rollchairs have so much stress and boredom that they are overweight.

I don't think he's actually nailed to the wheelchair. Pretty sure he uses gravity to hold him in place. Maybe some sort of seatbelt. Nails are a bit extreme.

I was teasing a little. I figured that it was a language thing, and I wouldn't hold that against you.

Just keep hammering away at it, and you'll have perfect English nailed down pretty soon. Then you won't get screwed like this again. You have the staples of the language sorted out, so just chisel away at the rest...

I'm so sorry...

The NYTs has an article on a few apps to help with your Thanksgiving menu planning including a free one from Bon Appetit. The scheduling feature seems particularly handy especially if you're cooking for a big crowd with lots of dishes.

I kinda hate that Canada has such an early Thanksgiving in October. It seems like such a long way until Christmas and then I have to read about all the deliciousness of American Thanksgiving and your big huge spreads of yumminess.
