Currently, our health club is afflicted by persons called resolutionists or resolutionaries. Persons who've resolved for the New Year to use their club membership (or get one) to lead a healthier more active life. I applaud their resolve, but find it darn inconvenient when trying to find a parking place.

They are just trying to help you with your exercise by encouraging you to park as far away as possible so you get a nice long walk!

This user agrees. But then, who wouldn't, right?

So, this happened last week:

Dear Stephanie Bordeaux--Seeger,

Congratulations! You have been accepted into the Institute of American Indian Arts' MFA in Creative Writing Program in Poetry.
I'm waiting to hear if I get a scholarship for the program. If not, applying to other scholarship programs and our tribe's Higher Ed. program for graduate school money. I intended to apply to an MFA program in 2001 (!), but I kept putting it off until the kids were older. My youngest was two years old in 2001. Twelve years later...it's a low-residency program, and it's not really much more marketable for jobs than a bachelor's in liberal arts, but it will mean a raise at work and more respect (in theory) than just having a bachelor's in liberal arts.

That's wonderful, Sans! I'm glad you are finally going, you will find the financing somewhere.

Dear Ms. Bordeaux-Seeger,

Congratulations! I am pleased to make you a preliminary offer of a Mellon Master’s Fellowship. We at the American Indian College Fund believe that your earning a master’s degree will be of great value to you and your tribal college.
The fellowship award is almost enough to pay for the whole program tuition. This is the definition of "Indian time", in that things happen not when you plan them or when you expect them, but when they're meant to happen. When the thing that's meant to happen happens, other things to make it happen just fall into place. So that's my good news for the year.
