Default Status Update (May 27)

Greetings, Kokua/Imprudence fans! It’s time for another status update.

Lately, we have been hard at work finishing up Imprudence 1.4.0 beta 1. It has been a loooong time coming, but we think it will be worth the wait! Our current goal is to release the beta next week, perhaps on Thursday or Friday. But, as with any release, that depends on our personal schedules and how much time we can work on Imprudence between now and then.

One bit of exciting news is that I have been able to focus and make good progress on the Mac media system in the past few days. It’s not fully working yet, but it’s close. With a bit of luck and some favorable winds, I will be able to get audio streams on Mac working in time for the beta next week!

Work on Kokua is taking a back seat while we wrap up Imprudence 1.4.0 beta 1. After beta 1 is released, we will be switching focus to Kokua while the feedback and bug reports for beta 1 come in. Our plan is to update Kokua to SL Viewer 2.6, then release another Kokua test build. The Kokua test build will be followeb by Imprudence 1.4.0 beta 2, although we might switch that order if the 2.6 merge seems to be taking too long.

Quite a few people have suggested that we just abandon Imprudence 1.4, and focus only on Kokua. These suggestions are usually reactions to rumors that Linden Lab will “very soon” block 1.x-based third-party viewers (like Imprudence) from connecting to Second Life. But actually, although Oz Linden has said in the past that they might block 1.x-based TPVs eventually, there has been no indication that it will happen soon.

Furthermore, even if Imprudence stopped working with Second Life, it will still work with OpenSim for many years to come. OpenSim and its derivatives are our primary targets, and we remain committed to supporting them. So, we will continue to juggle both Imprudence and Kokua development until Imprudence 1.4 is finished. It is certainly challenging to develop two viewers in parallel, but abandoning Imprudence before it is wrapped up would be a disservice to many of our users. We will carry on and see the task through to completion.

2 users laughed. The question is: Are they laughing with you, or at you?:
