One day, which happened to be last weekend, PL and Goons were getting ready to have a battle. When the battle was about to begin, Goon FC flying a Titan accidentally'd the whole plan by clicking "jump" instead of "bridge", which instead of sending his fleet into the battlefield to fight the PL, sent his titan into the battlefield to fight the PL. All by itself.

PL said OMFG CHEEZBURGRS and called more people. Goon titan said HFS HALP! and called more goons. PL had their more people call more people, and Goons had their goons call more goons. And those more people and goons called anyone else they could think of, who in turn called everyone else THEY could think of. And PL and Goons said FIRE EVERYTHING!!!!

The end.

Here's a nice video of the pretty lights that ensued. Just mute the audio, partly because of NSFW language but mostly because nobody in EVE knows how to compose good audio for their in-game videos.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLqb-m1ZZUA#!

Who won the battle? I have no idea - and honestly, who cares at this point? 3000 players blowing each other up. Just watch that beautiful video.

ETA: that ! at the end is part of the URL, but the forum software doesn't seem to want to accept it as such. So I cannot embed the video for you; you'll have to copy-paste and watch it on the Youtube site.

PL won, I was in delve with my carrier harassing TEST renters thus too far out of position to join.

I wouldn't have been able to join anyway; my video card would've melted.

This is how it really went down by the way.

We're at relative peacetime right now, no active wars being waged, so all of our combat squads have scampered off to delve (Combat squads being comprised of people who are actually motivated to PVP as our primary method of entertaining ourselves, as opposed to say.... ratting... or being dumb). However in order to keep interest up in the game for the people who don't participate in the "Combat squads" but do require a little bit of PVP DaBigRedBoat (idiot) has been using his titan to drop fleets of subcaps on various targets of opportunity.

So two sides in faction warfare were duking it out over a POS in lowsec, both goons and PL were planning to hotdrop this fight with whatever they had laying around at the time. Thus the misclick. With a full fleet ready to drop in on this POS boat accidentally jumps his titan instead of bridging it. At the same time PL realizes that Boats titan just landed on field and scrambles to get supercaps in to kill it. Boat calls for a few suicide carriers to come in and cap him up... he jumps back out safely just as the PL super fleet jumps in.

Now. We have a really big super fleet. And really fast formup times. So Boat decides he's going to wake up today and become two years ago's Yaay (The FC that murdered something like 7 PL titans in a single day) and calls for a mass login of our supers before any of the adult supervision can stop him and jumps our superfleet in unsupported.

This is not an issue, we outnumber them. Work starts. We start slugging it out but there is one advantage that PL has. Ghostriders. Ghostriders are a carrier doctrine wherein a suicide carrier jumps in and starts ejecting hictors and then the carrier pilot hops out of his carrier and into a hictor to tackle supercaps. So we're both doing damage to eachother, but the PL supers can warp off field, repair, come back. Meanwhile our supers can do no such thing because our support fleet is still forming in VFK.

At this point an adult logged in and said something to the effect of "You commited our supers without a support fleet with hics on standbye?!?" and we start trying to extract. The rest is history.

I wasn't there. I was in delve with the combat squads. Specifically at that point I was sitting in my Sabre on TEST alliances capitol system's undock killing people while talking about how dumb boat was.

Why was that pilot wasting webs on a carrier. Waste of cap.

Oh Sidenote: Boat lost two supers that day. His Titan and his SC which was loaned to him by another player. This marks the second time he's lost a SC that was loaned to him. Fortunately he's rich as balls.

Meh, cut the guy some slack. If he's got the money to replace what he loses then why the heck not? Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead I say. It's what I would do and I wouldn't regret it.

While we're on the subject, this kind of huge epic system-crashing battle shouldn't be something that happens only once every two years or so. Whoever the participants, EVE needs more of this.

Back in EVE after a long time. It's visually more prettiful. I especially like the green-line overlay when you've got a multi-jump destination set, that shows you where the stars you're jumping to actually are in the sky. Also how all those nice background-art nebulae actually exist, inasmuch as when you jump toward them they get closer, and you eventually even get inside them and stuff. Some places like Domain are just cloudy blah all around; but in other regions there's noticeable features you can get closer to or further from, enter or emerge from. I like attention to detail like that.

Exploration no longer shooty? Meh.

Getting rich quick by incursioning for now. The incursioners seem to have grown up while I've been away because I haven't seen any dramas, which at least makes it tolerable.

Love the Sisters of EVE ships. Love them. Last week I ran a couple of exploration sites in low, and then popped a couple of other solo explorers, one of them in another Astero. Thinking about trying some solo WH PVP with one of them, but I'm not sure whether I should do it with the new frigate or the new cruiser.

Also, love the mobile depots. Love them long time. Now when I go WHing I don't have to permanently sacrifice a high slot for a probe launcher.

In other news, EVE made the front page of Yahoo today!

Some numbers from that battle:

Quote:
Totals destroyed:

· Titans – 75 (74 in system, one on its way to the fight) N3/PL lost 59 titans and CFC/DTF lost 16 titans

· Titan losses by type: Gallente Erebus – 37, Amarr Avatar – 25, Minmatar Ragnarok – 13, Caldari Leviathan - 0

· Supercarriers – 13 (12 in system, one as it tried to escape the system)

· Dreadnaughts – 370 (356 in system, 14 in connected skirmishes as both sides attempted to stop the other from bringing reinforcements)

· Carriers – 123 (109 in system, 14 in connected skirmishes as both sides attempted to stop the other from bringing reinforcements)

· And lots more smaller ships and probably a bajilion drones and fighters

In comparison, the previous record for largest single battle Titan losses was a tie between battles in “O2O” and “Uemon”, with 12 total Titans destroyed in each.

Approximately 775 doomsdays were fired, which is about 24% of all the doomsdays fired in the last two years inclusive. The Battle for HED-GP, which preceeded this one in the Halloween War, had about 200 doomsdays.
The battle:

In that second image, every red or orange dot represents a player ship or player-controlled drone.

Over 6,000 unique players participated in the 20-hour battle (2,600 was the highest in-system-at-one-time count), with an additional 1,500 players fighting in related battles in adjacent systems, which could make this incident the largest single online game event in history in terms of player participation.

ETA: I'm not going to bother posting the amount of ISK (in-game currency) that was lost in terms of destroyed ships and equipment and such; the reason being because - like in that Yahoo article and all other RL news articles, comparisons are inevitably drawn to the equivalent in "real world" money, and such comparisons are always extremely misleading at the very best. However, in terms of a less liquid resource like player time...each of those titans costs months (of real-time) to build, and a ridiculous sum of in-game currency and resources which themselves take non-trivial amounts of time to acquire (in fairness, in-game currency can be bought with real money kinda-sorta, which leads to the faulty comparisons I mention above; but it's not a direct exchange and nothing of value can be converted back into real money). And that's not mentioning the over-a-year it takes for a player to train up the skills necessary to be able to do everything involved in building and ultimately flying a titan. The 59 titans that PL lost in this battle represent the culmination of several years of combined playing time on the part of an army of cooperating players.

I understand that CCP is planning to insert a static wreckage field close by as a memorial.

I can fly a dictor. Or even a hictor. Why the heck wasn't I invited?

Well actually I know why; but anyway, it was lots of fun to read about.

59 titans. 59! How does PL recover from that? I presume that having taken such a huge loss, some of their other systems ought to be under attack. Or is everybody waiting for the weekend?

Another new-to-me thing (remember, I just resubbed last month): the new certificate system. It's been redone so the certs make a bit more sense I guess; but what I like better is there's now "mastery" levels for each ship too, which are more helpful for when you don't especially care about earning general "certificates" but want to make sure you're training the right stuff to fly a specific ship well.

Like, I can fly an Onieros pretty ace and I have a high mastery in it. Whereas, before, there was only a general "logistics" certificate that I would likely never get a high level in because I'm not training up all the cap and shield logi skills that it requires but which have nothing to do with flying an Onieros.

Sucks though - my iPod EVE thing still believes in the old certs and not the redone ones. It even checks off the no-longer-existing certificates whenever I happen to fill the requirements. Dumb.

I'm pretty much at the point where certs are near meaningless and most of what I do is polish and edge up my skillqueue for minimal gains.

And if I do get a wild hair up my ass to fly the perfect mach, I already know what to train.

If you like covert hotdrops you should look at the Stratios.

I've got a fit that craps out 820 DPS with 40k EHP and it's shield fit so it can jump through a blops without making the pilot yank his hair out.

Back in EVE, just settled up in null with a new alpha and mixing it up in Hakonen with PH.

What do you think of it so far?

I recently started an account on there.
But I don't really play it.

Started to check out the thing where you can search for actual stars in RL through an interface in EVE, but.. it was a bit much for me at the time.
(Tired or whatever.)

Definitely not for everyone. The learning curve is daunting at first glance but once you get the hang of things you settle into a routine. Pace yourself and work on what you need while making isk. EVE has much in common with submarine warfare: periods of exicitement in between periods of tedium. But that excitement is a helluva drug.

Right on.
Maybe I'll give it another try sometime.

For now, I'm having a lot of fun with No Man's Sky... again.
New update, partially online multi-player (up to 16 people, appear as floating orbs of light).
It advances the story lines, as well as missions per race/guild.
New graphics.... just an awesome update!

Sorry, to go on.
EVE is a different creature, but I don't mind mining all that much... so I'd have that going for me.
(Plus, I love the graphics!)
