Default New quilt finished

I just finished this quilt on Sunday. I've been working on it off and on for about five years. I bought the fabric in 2005 at my favorite quilt store, which has since closed I think I made most of the diamonds for it the same week I bought it, but there were a few unfinished. I then apparently GAVE the diamonds and fabric to my mother to use for a giveaway* when her husband died (her version. I don't believe her because this was $9/yd fabric and I wouldn't just GIVE it away for her to giveaway for a man I didn't even like...), but anyway, somehow these diamonds and leftover fabric survived my house fire in 2006, I dunno how
So, about 18 months ago I found the quilt top pieces (in my mother's quilt fabric stash) and ordered more fabric for the background and finished the top. Some of the quilt is hand pieced, some machine pieced. After I finished the top I started hand-quilting it. I didn't quilt it for the whole year. I put it away and worked on other stuff, but every now and again I pulled it out and put some stitches in. Finally in July this year I hauled it out again and finished it.
I think this is the first quilt I've ever made for myself in 18 years of quilting.

*a "giveaway" is a ceremony practiced pretty much throughout most Indian tribes where a family will give away a bunch of stuff, mostly handmade stuff like quilts and beadwork and regalia or even horses, etc. to honor someone for special occasions, such as name givings, death, memorials, graduations, winning a basketball tournament, going to the military, etc.

Beautiful! My grandmother hand-quilted all of her quilts, so I have always sort of considered that kind of the only "real" quilting. Must feel fantastic to have it finished!

This looks great! Must've been a lot of work though. I admire your patience - I rarely managed to finish any sewing / crochet projects.

Also, hello cat on the left, you're cute

I'm utterly blown away by that. This is a skill and art I greatly admire. I've been wanting to purchase one but have not found "the one" yet.

Beautiful work Sans. Wish I had you near me to teach me how to do this

My latest masterpiece.

I'm calling it my Wildflowers quilt. I started it last summer, just using up scraps from the scrap box. Took all winter to quilt it because I was working on other projects. I'm really happy with this quilt, though, and I love that I don't have to sell or give it away to anyone. It's too small for a bed, more like a lap quilt. It's only the second quilt I've ever made for myself after twenty years of quilt making (and the first was the wedding quilt I made for me and P2, so this one is just for me).

eta: the first quilt pictured in the OP I ended up giving away to my cousin a week after I finished it because she graduated from college and nobody in the family had thought to buy or make her a quilt. This is generally how most of my quilts ended up not belonging to me--I either sold them for propane money or gave them away.

My oldest daughter, Sheridan, is really talented at photography (and makeup). This one is pretty casual, but her photos are amazing. I was hoping she'd want to go into photography as a career, but she says she's interested in going into music.

No reason she can't do both. I will advise her from experience that if she's interested in pop music (as opposed to music education or a classical music career), a degree won't really do her much good -- about as much as my theatre degree would have done me had I completed it.

She is an excellent writer, and the photography would complement that nicely.

She can do it all... multi-disciplinary degrees rule. I have moved all around and outside my degree since graduation... a degree is only a starting place.

I have several quilt tops that were pieced together by my grandmother over the years. She didn't have the strength to finish them before she passed away. I wish I had the time, patience and skill to get them quilted onto a backing.

The quilts are such a strong reminder of my grandma...most of the fabrics she used were leftovers from shirts and dresses that she made for herself and all her grandkids. As a kid we visited her every summer (a teensy town in Illinois), and she always had a needle in her hand...either quilting, knitting, crocheting, cross-stitching or embroidery. She could do it all.

Can I modify your statement just a little? Which degree you get is over rated. Unless it's in a science type degree. Just getting one is the important part. Last time I heard the stats most people left their career of degree 3 years after graduation. My degrees were in Literature and Finance and I made most of my money negotiating contracts for the legal department and managing at a S&P 500 company. The controller there got his degree in English. The degree itself is the ticket to your first job, beyond that it's your talent that matters

My

I think Sheridan would have a BALL in theater. She could get a taste of music, do photography for promotional material, get on the makeup crew, have fun with wardrobe (this is where I really think she will have the most fun ), and try her hand at writing. She can try it all at once, and figure out what she enjoys the most! She is fortunate to have interests that fit together so well A minor in writing would be an excellent compliment to that degree as well, and something she can always fall back on

I was actually working on three projects, a quilt, a sweater and a knitted shawl.

The shawl is for a knitting challenge (yeah, there's such a thing as a knitting challenge!) If I get three projects done for the challenge I get free yarn. Doesn't sound like a big deal, but it's Wollmeise, which is German yarn that's so special and rare that you can't even buy it. It sells out almost before it reaches the U.S.. Even then it's only available on eBay and can cost up to $160 a skein and you don't know for sure that you're going to get actual Wollmeise. So, for the reward of free Wollmeise I'm knitting a shawl and two other as-yet-unnamed projects this summer.

Then there's the cardigan I finished today. It's only the second adult-sized sweater I've made. Started it before Easter, put it aside to make socks, quilts, etc. and finally finished the dang thing today. It doesn't have buttons yet because I can't find any I like.

There are also several sets of socks in progress, but I've always got socks going. I'm really enjoying my vacation other than the health issues w/ my grandmother.
