Default Tom Swift

Anyone else read these when they were kids? I still have mine and own almost all of them.

Turns out that the book I read in the 70s were actually the second series. That was Tom Swift Jr. and there was a series of Tom Swift from 1910.

Also, I recently found out Steve Wozniak (of Apple fame) was a huge fan of the series too

"Man, I'm so stoned, I don't understand anything that's going on..." said Tom not-so-swiftly.

I've never read any Tom Swift, but when I was in high school, one of the joke memes that went around was a joke form called Swifties or Tom Swifties*. The reported basis for them is that Tom was said to say everything adverbially: "Tom said quickly," "Tom asked slyly," "Tom yelled suddenly," "Tom spoke quietly," and so on.

"I'll have this lightning rod connected in a moment," Tom said sparkily.

"Let's get my new aero-flyer up in the air. Hang on!" Tom said airily.

*There were also elephant jokes and Moby Grape jokes.

Q: Why do elephants wear tennis shoes? A: To play tennis, of course!

Q: What's big, purple, and dives 5,000 feet in the ocean? A: Moby Grape

What?! So? We were easily amused. Some of us--not me!--even liked the Beach Boys and the Four Seasons.
