Default Fucking health insurance rant

OK... most of you know that on the subject of health care for all, I tend to grow fangs and growl so...

I'm enrolled in Nursing School starting this Fall. To be in the program, I must have health insurance, and since I'm unemployed and don't have a husband with benefits, that means I have to buy it myself. And since I don't get any perks like businesses do, not even able to buy it pre-tax, it's going to be extra sucky.

The absolute best price I could find was $100/month with a $10,000 deductable, 30% coinsurance and no coverage for anything like office visits, preventative care. In other words, pretty much useless since 10K + 30% of anything serious is enough to break you. And honestly... I don't know if I can swing this. Essentially, it's an additional $1200 a year to go to school.

If I lived in any other industrialized nation, I wouldn't be dealing with this. And hey.. I'd still have my house and retirement too.

So here's what I have to say.

You worthless fuckers who mouth platitudes about Medicaid and charities, while enjoying your employer-paid or spouse-provided health care insurance. (Especially those of you with government-paid benefits)...

You spineless pathetic fucks who are so desperately frightened by any possibility of change that you ignore the example of the entire rest of the industrialized world, and the hard truth that if we do not get universal health care, it's going to destroy our economy...

You hypocritical scum who ignore the 45,000 deaths and 60% bankruptcy rates from lack of insurance or insurance company greed and still have the GALL to consider yourselves moral people...

I sincerely hope that you and yours reap the harvest of the policies you support. I hope that you find out first-hand how warm and loving the insurance bureaucrat that you trust so much is when you start costing them too much money.

I hope you find yourself desperately sick and financially ruined. Or better still, that you get to watch a loved one suffer horribly because you can't afford the care they need.

I hope you have to choose between taking your insulin or blood pressure or heart medicine and eating cat food.

I wish you despair and damnation.

i would agree with this post except that i truly believe things you wish on others come back on you threefold. but i agree with the part that those who would withhold health care from another for any reason have no business thinking of themselves as moral or ethical.

I know the PC response would be for me to say "how could you say those horrible things", but honestly....

Having experienced many problems in my own life with this, and watching my mom and others around me get sick and financially ruined because of lack of insurance, and family unable to afford meds crucial to health, and watching my close friend pick and choose which blood tests she thought were most important this morning out of what her Dr suggested because she has to pay out of pocket, watching my close family friend and vet fight for coverage, and I could list so many other examples.....

I tend to agree. The people who don't think heath care is a right are horribly selfish and don't understand (or care) that their efforts are causing deaths. I don't wish death on anyone, but I wish they would get a taste of what they are doing to others or could see it first hand so that they would understand. Things become a lot different when they become reality for someone close to you and not just a political belief.

You know, I really hate feeling this way. I am consumed with rage and hate right now. I literally feel ill I'm so angry.

As for threefold, I've already paid in advance.

Surreal, with the continuing issues that you are having with your knees and so forth, have you considered simply going to a doctor (paying out of pocket at this point, of course) and applying for disability? My Medicare is decent coverage, even without a supplement, and with one, it takes care of everything rather well.

Either way,

Sadly, I could probably qualify, but dammit I'm not giving up on this. If I could find a sit-down job, I could work.

I've lost 25 lbs since Jan 1st and although I haven't seen any real improvement knee-wise, I'm still hopeful that another 20-25 lbs will do the trick and let me rehab them. I've got until end of July to regain my mobility or I may as well not go to school. Nurses need knees.

I was paying out of pocket for my insurance much like you described. The only benefit being if a catastrophe happened. I just finally was able to get on my employers insurance the past six months, and waited what I felt was an appropriate time and finally have gotten my son in first for a check up and now tomorrow is mine. I didn't realize it until I was told by the staff making my appointments that my son hasn't been seen since 2008 and I've not been seen since 2006.

The bad thing is, in both cases I felt ashamed when told those dates when in truth it just came down to the fact that there was nothing that warranted a doctors visit and I couldn't afford random check ups because I was already paying $700/month for my family's insurance, unused insurance that the companies kept raising the rate on every year when again, I never used it once.

I understand how you feel. It is definitely unjust.

I don't know what to tell you Surreal. Here we pay more for rent, more for food, and no doubt more for electricity/phone/Internet/gas/petrol. We might tax the fast fuck out of smokes and booze too.

But if you get sick? You don't lose your bloody house. You need a doctor for your little one? They fit you in asap. You guys totally need to get this shit together while you have half a chance.

Just do it America. Do it for the elderly. Do it for the children. Do it for the average working person that helps to care for both. Think of just the stress levels alone being slashed? Depression? Halved.

This in the long run will save money.

For you Surreal? From over here it's all I can offer you.

I'd rather my taxes pay for the "burden" of good health care for all Americans than a bailout for a bank or Wall Street.

If you were sick and out of work, I would not begrudge some of my tax dollars going to your health care. It's called not being a self-centered asshole.

But I'd rather not pay for some asshole insurance company's record profits, so they can then go buy a dozen politicians.

Gimme my ass.

I don't want to fucking hand-out. I want a level playing field. I want to be able to exert market forces on both health insurance premiums and the cost of medical care.

Whoever thought the tag was cute - you're part of the problem. You think the drain on productivity and the economy isn't going to affect you.... but you're wrong. You just won't figure it out until it's personal.

I'm in a much better mood this morning. That has been building up for a couple of years now and it felt good to just lose it.

I still have no clue how I'm going to swing an extra $1200, but I've got two months to figure it out. Ideally, I'll find a job.

Just catching up on your story Surreal, do you currently have ins? If you have been w/o for more then 63 days you lose creditable coverage status as far as them claiming pre-existing conditions, hence the knees?
My bro in law has this type of coverage it is what was best for him, he rarely needed the Dr. apt's thou. It wasn't bad to make sure that any major medical (hospitalization) would be covered. Here in FL pharmacy's are giving great deals, free or $4 for antibiotics. There are clinic about too for simple visits @ $25 or so.
Did they give you costs on the next step-up and cost w/o maternity? That is what I have it was 150 a month a few years ago, I am 37 no pre-existing conditions and its now 250.00 a month. Much better then group cost with my own company, which would have been 500 a month a few years ago.
The thing is our tax's will go up when this passes the health care bill, it will pass guys. So the general joe shmo will get hit with est +15% more. The big hitters never get that, they have ways to escape it.

how is it a gimme? are you suggesting that somehow the rest of us don't pay taxes? how come its not a gimmie when our taxes are used to pay for a war but when we talk about health insurance all of a sudden its socialism or a gimmie?

No insurance, I've been out of work now for 13 months. I'm in excellent health except for messed up knees, which the insurance company doesn't know about since I haven't been seen for them.

My problem is not getting medical care. It's having to pay $100+ a month for coverage that is essentially useless as a requirement for my schooling.

Well as the health care plan currently stands, it's just a big gimmee to insurance companies. It fails on pretty much all fronts and we'll just have to deal with this again in 10 years or so when the pressure builds up again... especially with the retiring boomers.

Nothing is free. There is a huge cost to having so many Americans without health care. This cost gets passed along to insured people in the form of higher premiums and deductibles and to the whole system in the form of increased health care costs. The current system also burdens business greatly as it is forced to do a job that is done by government in the countries of their competitors. That makes every insured employee a burden and doubly so for any insured's dependents. And with a myriad of private insurance companies, the system is incredibly inefficient, wasting money for everyone. There are huge burdens being borne already by all of us and by doctors, hospitals, and business.

What really chaps my ass is I don't like paying taxes anymore than anyone else, but that doesn't mean I think there is some kind of infrastructure fairy that tucks bridge maintenance under you're pillow if you've been good.

I just want to get something for my taxes.

And I don't even mind if politicians grab off a little bit of graft. It's the nature of the beast. But in the last decade, it's been bold-faced blatant steal everything that's not nailed down.

You know we talk all cynical about Social Security and Medicare, but when the reality hits and the government doesn't pay up.... the shit is going to hit the fan. Those won't be cookies in grandma's bag.

So right now we pay a fuck load of money to insurance companies who are getting rich. I'm not seeing how that is better than taking that money and actually putting it into health care where it can take care of someone like Surreal.

Adding to Arilynn's post.

People who can afford to get regular check-ups tend to catch diseases before they get expensive (and fatal).

Healthy people work and pay taxes.

Sick, disabled and dead ones don't.

It was mild "gimme gimme" and has now been replaced by all the ones below, government dole, etc.

I guess I'm too mean and scary for them to show their face.
