REally cool program I found. it models the whole universe procedurally and lets you explore, land on planets and snap sexy pictures!

http://en.spaceengine.org/

Here's some pics I made:

A life baring temperate terra I found orbiting a gas giant! Has two day times due to being part of a two star system, probably more. high day and low day. It has high high day every few years when both stars are in the sky at once. Agriculture would be ...interesting on this planet.

It can take up to 15 minutes to fully load in all the details for shots like these and appears to keep filling out details until my PC runs out of ram and it crashes. most of these took about 11 minutes.

Perspective:

I used telescope mode for a closer look and got a nice shot of a moons shadow

Love this picture!

ringed planet with life: (yep, I named it after myself.)

I'm hooked!

That sounds pretty sweet... and grats on finding those awesome digs!

I'm currently extracting the zip files.
Way too interesting for me not to at least try it out!

Found a Black hole orbiting a white super giant. Here it is eclipsing the star.

I found myself in a system containing what the program called "orange dwarves," but which seemed to look like comets (they seemed to have tails) orbiting a more typical star. The info on the star said it had eight planets, but so far I only found one, a gas giant.

That sounds like some Christmas party crowd: dwarves and gassy giants.

I'm here all week.

Pressing f1 and turning on orbits of the system can help to make sense of the more complex ones.

How much HD space does it take up?

Requires 1GB of HD space. They recommend 10GB.

Thanks for sharing this Richard - I too am having a great time exploring! I'm also amazed at how this can possibly work...I would think the data to support it would be WAY more than a gig . Anyway I've barely learned how to navigate so if I can manage some pics soon I'll share

A new version has been uploaded today. Has some nice changes. It identifies the life types on planets now. Found some exotic organics on a planet in a nearby galaxy and even some floaters living on Ice giants and other gaseous bodies.

Downloading now.

Earlier today I did a very non-scientific experiment - I positioned myself on Sol then accelerated to 1c toward Earth and arrived in ~8 minutes. Not that I should doubt the accuracy of this thing but it's the only fact I could test with and it came through with flying colors

yarg.

I'm downloading it now (again).
The d/l from softvrv.com came up as possibly malicious, so I discarded it and am downloading from wuala.com, hoping it'll pass muster.
(The EXE on Google Drive has been downloaded too much, so it's not currently available.)

And Yandex sucks.

Other than that, i'm hoping this'll work and I can play with it some more.

I did get a couple shots of stars on my first run on it, but nothing planetside.
So, for now, here's these:

Here's another shot from the surface of Baye Kaan.
The first is the unedited screenshot.
The second version is after I p'shopped it... and is also my current desktop pic.

(If I remember correctly, this is in a polar region.)

I love to see this as a game. FPS with avatars and spaceships you can not only pilot but you can also walk around.

Do battle with other players and their ships. Land on the planets. Wrestle lizard men. Bang blue chicks.

EPIC!
