Well the Nobody Cares thread in the Bunker isn't truly a Nobody Cares either.

Here is my problem with religion. I am still close to many "believers" . Well at least those that can accept the fact I cant get behind exactly what they believe. It just became to hard to turn a blind eye towards the greed, selfishness, and double standards.

Not to mention I found myself just challenging them on every translation. At some point you have to accept the fact your just not the same religion as them.

Maybe if you prayed about it hard enough we would all stop posting here.

So this thread is your fault for not praying about this thread!

I think that "nobody cares about religion" isn't the same thing as "let's pick on the people who are into/aren't into religion".

Self-expression on the subject is okay, imo, but going after those with differences in opinion isn't.

Otherwise we might as well just call this "Godwin's Creek" and hunt crawdads instead.

Why crawdads?

Because that is my religion. Hunt the elusive Godwinian crawdads, and serve 'em in a gumbo. And be grateful.

[or something]

Crawdads aside, the following best sums up my thoughts on humanity's efforts to "define" an Infinite/ Immortal deity:

I spent decades on this stuff.

I am not about to distill it all down here [nor could I]. I have lived my life and had my experiences, they happened, I know they're real, and that's not a subject for debate or discussion. My walk is an ineffable thing, and it's mine- just as yours are your own. I don't proselytize and never will, and I'll thank you all to do similarly.

I am not into religions- I came to the conclusion that the primary directive of any hierarchy is self-perpetuation, which means that in the clinches, any hierarchy is going to throw anybody and anything under the Cosmic Bus in an effort to keep themselves going- which makes them, at root, political organizations.

One of the most destructive, evil, horrible traditions of certain of those organizations is that of conquest and domination. The Christians call it "evangelism" and the Muslims call it something else, but at root it's the drive toward conformity and obedience, the drive to impose control over humanity [and thereby limit us], and the willingness to destroy anybody or anything that doesn't match the [very limited] profile these idiots create. Monoculture is extraordinarily destructive in natural systems, and no less so in human ones.

I'm all for spiritual evolution and the Golden Rule, for ethics and morality and all the good stuff. If it takes religion for some people to get there, I suppose that's fine, although it seems as though the kids in the playground are only "behaving" contingent upon the teacher standing over them with a stick**, and whenever the teacher turns their back, they revert to playground law- all the "pious" preachers and politicians caught with their pants down come to mind.

I find the fundamental [ha] flaw with "Unthinking Believers"- of any stripe- is that they have created a Punishing God/dess.

Worse, they never seem to be content to wait for that God to administer Hir own punishments. They always seem to be telling their "flocks" who to lynch or behead or burn at the stake.

If we're all God's children, then it's very Lord of the Flies.

**I was once interviewed by a zine on this subject, and linked it to Maslow and Kohlberg and their hierarchies of needs/motivations.

Points at signature.

The past couple of years have proven to be very enlightening for me.
I've always struggled with it due to a strict religious upbringing, but what the Hitch says there has always been in my mind. Especially after years of military service and witnessing the human race in all it's shades of ignorance and cruelty.

I dunno about the spelling -- whether intentional or not -- but the typography on Mississippi is wonderful! It'd be almost worth living there to be able to put that on a business card or something like.

One of the things inherent in our federal constitution is the principle that states get to be dumbasses if they want, if it doesn't violate the federal constitution. Texas has always been at the forefront of the dumbass movement in the United States and it is quite likely that Texas will continue at the forefront of the dumbass movement throughout the foreseeable future.

You'd think that, given our violent struggle over unilateral secession, that we would have passed an amendment to our Constitution that would spell out a way for a state to withdraw from the Union, peacefully and with the consent of the remaining States.
