I was a militant Condell-style atheist for a few years, but that time is over.

Default I was a militant Condell-style atheist for a few years, but that time is over.

I know many of you aren't a fan of videos, and that's ok--it IS a thing I do a lot though. I really wish there were forums where you could leave posts via your webcam, like Glide Beta but for forums. Anyway, blah blah...

I used to be quite the Islamophobe. I was a Condell-style atheist. I developed a very negative attitude towards religion and religious people.

I diligently followed people like TheAmazingAtheist, CultOfDusty, and other really angry atheists. I'll still watch them once in a while, but now I watch them with the knowledge that I don't want to be anything like them anymore.

But back to the Condell thing--I actually thought there really could have been some sort of "creeping sharia", I fell for the propaganda, I fell for a lot of crap.

This is before I learned how to move on from the past, to let go of the negativity, to let go of fear of the unknown, to embrace my spirituality again.

It's so easy to assign blame to a group, it's the easy, lazy way of doing things, and if a group of people who SEEM rational and logical are doing it, it makes it that much easier.

I'm ashamed for the way I believed, but at least I've gotten past it.

Any kind of extremism, be it fundamental Islam, Christianity, Judaism, or Atheism, is dangerous. Knee jerk reactions are too easy to induce.

Yeah, I used to be a militant atheist during my early twenties, back when I thought I knew everything about everything and was all too eager to try to prove it to everyone.

I think a lot of folks go through that phase in their twenties.
I'm thankful that I grew out of all that bullshit, and that others have not. lol :P

Well, just so you know, I'm done with SLUniverse. I've never been treated that poorly in all my life, and I'm just done with them. Chris can delete my account there if he wants, I didn't go there for negativity, so I'm done there.

Well, you know yer sexy ass is welcome here all the time, sweetcakes!

But yeah, I come from a different angle... having grown up Christian.
I used to be pretty much strictly Christian in my thinking and more supportive of Republicans than Democrats.

Now, I've become religiously unknown/ambiguous, disgusted by Republican politics and firmly in a liberal Democratic camp.
My main "thing" is freedom and equality, without prejudice.
With a healthy side of caring for our fellow humans and for the planet as a whole.

(Although, I can't say I'm not tempted to jump back into SLU to hopefully bring the rain of fire upon my own head... just for the challenge of it. (Also known as shits and giggles.))

My opinion:

a. Fuck 'em.

b. Who cares what other people think.

c. It's hard to have a nice, reasonable discussion with some people, because they just seem to live to throw barbed thorns into other people, thinking this means they're "smart." They can't just talk about stuff. They gotta always be these little thorny, prickly things.

d. To hell with them.

You know, I completely agree but one thing I've learned is that for many people "Who cares what other people think" doesn't work. I think thre is something that some people learn in childhood that others don't that makes a difference, and it doesn't matter socioeconomic level or "good parent vs bad parent"

As opposed to couching one's medieval opinions inside a "harmless lovable good old gal" persona and then resorting to homespun stories about baking cakes instead of defending your reprehensible world view when it's called on.

I definitely have a barbed tone but at least it's honest.

Of course you could just follow people around that you don't agree with and make snide derogatory comments every time they post.

That's what I do.

True.

Also, that was written poorly. It should really be, who cares what those certain people think.

I was thinking as I wrote it, well of course we care what others think or we wouldn't be posting our problems, thoughts, opinions, etc. What I meant really was when you do, you are sharing yourself in good faith, sometimes vulnerably so, and if people react like neurotic little cobras ready to spring, who cares what *they*, in particular, think.

And if there's too much of that, too many people who are like that there, well it's silly to even try to have a discussion in that sort of atmosphere.

So you identified with what I said, do you? I wasn't even thinking of you. I don't think of you as having a barbed tone. I do think of you as honest, and in a way I like, in large part.

And yes, I really am harmless, sweet, and homey. Also sophisticated, very well educated, and accomplished. I got my faults, and plenty of them, but I really am all those things.

I don't have a "reprehensible world view." That exists in your mind only. You have been saying things that are supposedly what I think or how I am for so long now, I don't even pay any attention to it any more, haven't you even noticed that?

Trying to cram me into this caracature you have going is a hopeless task. You really ought to give it up.

P.S. What I said about little cobras ready to spring, though, is rather apt for you, come to think of it.

I switched my "agree" to "thanks" on her post. I'd like to think that I don't care what people think, but I do when I blatantly know about it. I left SLU because I didn't want to know about it anymore.

And on a nice day when you are stopped at the red light in middle of your town, the next to you car's owner is so pleased with his music that he is turning it so loud smiling to you thinking he is doing you a favour and you just must adoring his music, of course we are not even interested..

Though I know that there are plenty of examples of it, militant atheism seems to be a sort of oxymoron to me. Militantly anti-religion, yes, because it's an obvious response to militant religions, which are legion. But saying one doesn't operate on belief, that you don't derive your purpose nor are guided by the reputed sayings of an invisible being or beings, that's a quiet assertion of self.

It doesn't change the fact that I sympathize with persons who object to religious objects being placed in publicly owned places. It's not that it outrages me to have religion around; when it's excessive, it's a little creepy to me. But when it means that one religion is being put before another, simply because it's the local majority, that bothers me. And when religious persons are trying to control what a person may do with her body out of what are strictly religious convictions, I object. Militantly, if need be. But I don't need to make my atheism an in-their-face denial or refutation of their beliefs.

When I was younger, I was often different, more willing to get into an in-someone's-face argument about god and what humans have written that they claim are the words/acts of god. Thankfully, no more.

I just want grandchildren. Hurry up, daughter. Time's a-wastin'.
