Default BPAL: The Smell Good Thread™

Which stands for Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab. I have recently gotten my very first order from there, and have tried a couple of the scents. I know there's at least a couple other people on this forum that love BPAL. I thought we could talk about which ones we like etc...

What I ordered:
Bengal: A sultry and unruly blend that emulates the ambient scent of the markets in ancient Bengal: skin musk with honey, peppers, clove, cinnamon bark and ginger.
Bordello: A decadent, deep perfume, lusty and luxuriant. The scent evokes images of velvet-lined Old West cathouses, tightly laced corsets, rustling petticoats and coquettish snarls of pleasure. Bawdy plum with amaretto, burgundy wine and black currant.
Bewitched: Deep, luscious green and berry scents that evoke images of woodland witchcraft and the raw power of nature: blackberry, sage, green tea, wild berries and dark musk.
Mata Hari: A renowned exotic dancer and courtesan, possessed of aristocratic elegance, matchless charm, an iron will and a streak of fearlessness. The actual events of her life have met with much speculation, and to this day it is unclear whether or not she was truly a German spy. Despite shaky evidence of her guilt, she was tried for espionage by a closed court-martial and was executed by a French firing squad in 1917. Her scent is striking and bold with a delicate yet dark undertone: five roses with soft jasmine, warmed by vanilla, fig, tonka bean and mahogany, spiced with a drop of coffee bean.
Vice: Voluptuous and indulgent! A deep chocolate scent, with black cherry and orange blossom.
Blood Kiss: Lush, creamy vanilla and the honey of the sweetest kiss smeared with the vital throb of husky clove, swollen red cherries, but darkened with the vampiric sensuality of vetiver, soporific poppy and blood red wine, and a skin-light pulse of feral musk.

What I got for free:
Bliss: A shot of pure, self-indulgent euphoria! A scent that is very, very wicked in its own way: the serotonin-slathered scent of pure milk chocolate.
Desdemona: Innocent, soft and pure: sweet pea, carnation and water lily.

Bliss smells like chocolate... so, of course I love it. Vice also does, but I haven't actually worn it yet (I probably will tomorrow.)
I wore Bengal yesterday and I really like it on me, nice and warm.
I am trying Blood Kiss today, I'll let you know if I like it... I'm not real sure quite yet.

No. 93 ENGINE
Beeswax candles reflect flickering light onto a brass-coated boiler engraved with the words "Solve Et Coagula". The gargantuan boiler sends torrents of steam into rigid pipes that exert force onto innumerable pistons and turbine blades. The motion is harnessed to propel energy into gargantuan cogs and gears that move liquid metals, herbs, and resins into a series of alembics.

Balm of Gilead, benzoin, frankincense, balsam of peru, beeswax, saffron, galbanum, calamus, hyssop, mastic, lemon balm, and white sage.

I love the descriptions and the artwork on their site too.

Yay a BPAL thread!

If you like chocolate, I highly recommend:

Boomslang - Snake Oil with cocoa, teakwood, and rice milk. (Snake Oil is their signature scent. it is A blend of exotic Indonesian oils sugared with vanilla.)
Tezcatlipoca. - Deep cocoa laced with patchouli, leather armor, ritual incense, and a touch of Xochiquetzal’s flowers.
Both have that lovely dry cocoa smell, not necessarily chocolate, but oh so yummy.

I have recently found Mme Moriarty, Misfortune Teller, (Red musk, vanilla bean, pomegranate, patchouli leaf and wild plum) which is simply the most divine thing I've ever smelled in my life. Ever.

I have:
Pele - muguet and Hawaiian white ginger enveloped by warm, damp tropical blooms.

Aizen-Myoo - Yuzu, kaki, and mikan with cherry blossom and black tea.

Queen Mab - black orchid, sandalwood, night-blooming jasmine, osmanthus, Somalian rose, and Chinese musk.

All that I got as Imp's Ears. The Pele is my favorite BPAL scent thus far, and it's one I got as a free imp. My next order of Imp Ears will be the following:

White Rabbit - Strong black tea and milk with white pepper, ginger, honey and vanilla, spilled over the crisp scent of clean linen.

Alice - Milk and honey with rose, carnation and bergamot.

Siren - White ginger, jasmine, and a touch of vanilla and apricot.

Sudha Segara - Sweet milk and warm, healing ginger with a touch of golden honey and our blend of Ambrosia.

Baobhan Sith - Grapefruit, white tea, apple blossom and ginger.

Bengal - skin musk with honey, peppers, clove, cinnamon bark and ginger.

I also have:

House of Night - A sorrowful graveyard bouquet of somber blooms, funereal boughs, dismal green and laden with grief.

Lady of Shalott - The scent of calm waters just before a raging storm, limned with achingly-beautiful blooms, an icy scent, but somehow warm, and mirror-bright: bold gardenia, crystalline musk, muguet, water blossoms, clear, slightly tart aquatic notes and a crush of white ginger.

These were 2 of 4 that Momo sent me as trades for 4 scents that I got as imps and did not like on me. The other two I am sending to Coyote who is then sending me in return:

Bien Loin d'Ici - The Scarlet Woman, aglow with sensual indolence: red musk, benzoin, caramel accord, golden honey, and spiced Moroccan unguents

Titania - A nocturnal bounty of fae dew-kissed petals and pale fruits: white grape, white peach, iced pear, musk rose, sweet pea, moonflower and snapdragon.

Bengal sounds really good, but the cinnamon gives me pause. I have slight skin allergies at times, and folks have had reactions to cinnamon oil.

Hmmm, these look interesting:

March Hare
A twisted teatime tart: apricot and sweet clove.

TWEEDLEDUM & TWEEDLEDEE
Tweedledum and Tweedledee
Agreed to have a battle!
For Tweedledum said Tweedledee
Had spoiled his nice new rattle.

Just then flew down a monstrous crow,
As black as a tar-barrel!
Which frightened both the heroes so,
They quite forgot their quarrel.'

TWEEDLEDEE: Ridiculous! Kumquat, white pepper, white tea and orange blossom.
TWEEDLEDUM: Absurd! Green mango, fig, patchouli and green tea.

This one just made me laugh:

HAIRY TOAD LILY
Spotty, hairy, purple, sweet!

The problem with ordering smells online is the descriptions do NOTHING in terms of determining if I will like the scent. I always have to smell the item first. So, as awesome as the stuff sounds, there is a good chance I would order one I didn't like and miss all the ones I would otherwise love!

This is why we are all ordering imps ears (samples) so if we don't like it... well... we can always trade it with somebody else. ($3.50 each or $19.50 for six)

Gluttony - Thick, sugared and bloated with sweetness. Dark chocolate, vanilla, buttercream, and hops with pralines, hazelnut, toffee and caramel.

That sounds kinda nice, Vice might be too sweet, I may have to try it again.

I think I might try that Desdemona tomorrow, it would be a change for me. The only perfume I've ever really liked on me was Obsession.

I'm picking up another six-scent lot soon - with a heavy focus on Ren!

_LOUP GAROU_
The wild, untamed essence of lycanthropy. Primeval in its raw power and insatiable hunger: juniper, cypress and galangal with the barest touch of eucalyptus.

_THE ANTIKYTHERA MECHANISM_
Teakwood, oak, black vanilla, and tobacco.

_THE BOW & CROWN OF CONQUEST_
Nobility and haughtiness befitting the Antichrist: sage, carnation and cedar with lavender, vanilla, white musk and leather.

_DORIAN_
A Victorian fougere with three pale musks and dark, sugared vanilla tea.

_THE LION_
The dry, glorious warmth of the Savannah. A golden, spiced amber, proud, regal and ferocious.

I plan on picking up:

O
The scent of sexual obsession, slavery to sensual pleasure, and the undercurrent of innocence defiled utterly. Amber and honey with a touch of vanilla.

I may forgo the Loup Garou in favor of an imp of De Sade for both of us - let's just say Ren shares my particular lust for leather scents.

It's kind of hit or miss at first, but you start to learn what works on you and what doesn't. Like, I adore sandalwood incense, and I have had sandalwood oils from other places that I liked. But I've just recently come to terms with the fact that BPAL sandalwood hates me. :/ Vanilla, on the other hand, I never really liked. But BPAL vanilla just smells wonderful on me.

The first couple of imp packs I got, I only liked maybe one or two. But as I learn what works on me, I like more and more of what I try.

And now for BPAL pr0n:

Dee - John Dee: master of science, alchemy and magic, Hermetic philosopher in the schools of Rosicrucian Christian Mysticism and Platonic-Pythagorean doctrine, and Queen Elizabeth’s astrologer, advisor, cryptologist and spy. With Edward Kelly, he created a field of study and work in Angelic Evocation, and isolated the Angelic language: Enochian. His scent is soft English leather, rosewood and tonka with a hint of incense, parchment and soft woods.

I have an extra imp of Dee as well if it sounds like something you might like.

I just made a linen or body spray from BPAL oil.

Doing a little research, I found out that:

To mix oil and water, you need a surfactant. You can buy a cheap, harmless chemical called Polysorbate 20. I have some of this ordered, but I was impatient to test this out. For a quick, workable substitute, you can use a very small drop of unscented liquid soap.

If your solution is at least 20% alcohol, it will inhibit any kind of bacterial growth, etc.

Perfumer's alcohol is just basically 100% alcohol with an additive that makes it undrinkable. If your state sells Everclear, it is 95% alcohol and works just as well.

SO!

I got an 8 oz fine mister bottle and combined 80% distilled water (no minerals to interfere with the scent), 20% everclear, one drop of unscented soap, and about 1 1/2 ml (one and one half imp's worth) of perfume oil. shook it all up. Let it sit for a while. No separation of oil, barely any alcohol smell (what little there is quickly dissipates), and a lovely spray that I could use on myself, or on bed linens, or what have you.

The first couple of imp packs I got, I only liked maybe one or two. But as I learn what works on me, I like more and more of what I try.

And now for BPAL pr0n:

how? i turned you onto this like.. a month or two ago. and now you have more than me

It's actually been over 2 months!

I've been buying some stuff off of folks on teh forum there. They have a feedback system, like Ebay. It's really cool. And you can get stuff much quicker, and cheaper, than from the lab. If you're willing to dig around through sales posts and such.

The Yule holiday scents are going up in like a week, so I'm gonna wait till then to place an order, in case there's something new I want to try.
