Network troubles

OK, so I am working on our nephew's computer, an old Pentium machine running Vista. Everything was going well (this was a month or two ago) apart from lots and lots of garbageware, and then suddenly it lost its network connection.

Last night I started poking around it again; it shows its wired internet connection, but won't connect. It says there is no cable connected; I bought a brand new network cable, but no joy.

So, next thing to try; should I get a standalone NIC and try that? It's about the least expensive thing I can think of to try.

I hope that turns out well for you.
Maybe try upgrading the OS... like, maybe that'll jar something loose?

I don't know... I'm just spouting shit off the top of my head.

That would probably be the next thing. I'd rather try a $5 NIC first than a $100 OS upgrade.

D'oh... I thought they might still have a deal on upgrading.
Doesn't look like it though. :/

And 10 will only be a free upgrade for 8.1 and 7 users, from what I saw.
Not that it would help anyway, as it's not out yet.

I've been dual booting into the Tech Preview of Windows 10 for about 6 weeks now...it's quite stable, and certainly stable enough for P2 to attempt to jar his NIC loose (that sounds kinda dirty...)
