Being a Dell, it is easy to make sure you get all the new drivers.

You may need to sign in or make an account but that is no big deal.
Look for Drivers & Downloads.
There will be a point where you need to enter a service tag (like a serial number) and they should have a little thing to click and it will find it automatically. The service tag is on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop if you want to just enter it by hand.

In the Drivers & Downloads section, look for "Sound" (or audio, I forget what they call it), "Video" and "chipset" updates. Install them one at a time if there are updates for them. The chipset update will force a reboot and it actually installs while the laptop is powering up and before Windows starts.

i offer EXTREME advice in case nothing else works, but only because it sounds like your computer has become unresponsive. have you considered reformatting your computer? you'll lose EVERYTHING saved on it, so you would have to first back up all your data on to some CD's, flash drives or and external hard drive....

good luck and keep us posted on what progress you are making.
Thanks, I'll look at my computer again this evening (at work now).

And something I should have mentioned - everything else works on the computer. Only thing that does not is SL Viewers (and my photo processing software, though that occurred a long time ago and was a result of a failed update, I think).

running - i think it's awesome that you are disciplined like that. i wish i had that sort of will power. i ran track and x-country in high school. i wasn't "fast" on anything shorter than 1/2 mile, but i could run for a long time faster than most anyone else. it was those darned long legs. i earned a lot of medals and trophies and tshirts and my names on lots of walls. but.... you couldn't pay me to run now. really mostly i'd like my boobies to stay perky for as long as they can (that's my excuse and i'm sticking to it). ha ha ha

i do love walking though, up here. it is so beautiful and it's very therapeutic. i have a bowflex, but i'm lazy. i did feel better when i was walking and working out regularly. so i intend to start again next week, when i go back to my regular job. i can tell i've been lazy. i'm tired a lot, and my body doesn't fit my clothes right. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
I never ran until I was in my fifties. In the past I've gotten exercise from dancing, body boarding, and/or the gym (a bit of treadmill running there but mostly other aerobic exercise, stair steps, elipticals, rowing machines.)
I don't like running very much but it's easier to just put on running clothes and step out the front door and go than it is to get into a wetsuit, gather board, fins, etc and drive down to the beach. I like being out in the neighborhood early in the morning and seeing what people are growing in their yards and what home improvement projects they have going on. And I like saying hi to all the dog walkers and their different dogs. Actually now that I think about it I love body boarding. I should go do that soon.

For a few years my headaches did seem to be connected with hormonal fluctuations but not when I was in my 30's and 40's and not now that I'm in my 60's. I really can't correlate them to anything I do or eat, or places I go or people I'm with or moods I'm in or anything.

Are you asking me? I don't drink any soda of any kind. Sometimes I consume large amounts of Splenda, but I haven't connected it to headaches. And I was having the headaches for 30 years before Splenda was invented. I never liked any other sugar substitutes.

Made myself a hot chocolate with marshmallows to drink while watching a film.

By the time I'd got the film on and sat down to drink it the marshmallows had melted into a gooey marshmallow-y layer on top of the drink. Had to get a spoon to get through it.

If it's a newer PC you're probably using Windows 7 Home Premium. You have reinstalled the latest Second Life client, I'm guessing you took the default location so it's in "C:\Program Files\SecondLifeViewer2"?

Delete all of the shorcuts on your desktop and surf to the location where you installed it and make a fresh icon (at least then you know it's right).

At this point we're going to need some information from your Event Log. It probably will tell you what is happening when Second Life crashes (at least it used to unless they fucked that up). So Let's do a

Start -> Control Panel -> -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer

When it opens you'll see two panes, on the left is a stack of log file categories, we want the Application log. Now once you've left clicked it the right side will populate with stuff. We need to see if there are any Red stop signs or Yellow Exclamation points and identify whether or not they are related to either...

1) a Second Life application failure or
2) a video driver crashing

If you find any Stop Signs or Yellow Exclamation marks from recently (they're dated) post what you find.

hmm. 6 registry warnings on the 9th of August

Windows saved user registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

Do you have a virus? I would give it a good virus scan just to be sure. The fax thing is very puzzling and usually when this type of thing occurs

can mean a piece of malware is hanging up your registry, which will cause degradation over time as more of these errors occur.

Another common cause for it is when your MDM service (Machine Debug Managment) is running all the time because your machine isn't shutting down gracefully. MDM usually creates it's own recurring loops by failing to complete it's tasks before reboot/shutdown and then firing itself back up due to this failure. It's best to disable MDM in your services control panel.

It has been slightly rough shutting down computer.

I had some antiviral thingies at some point but I do not see them now.

And my own security program refuses to open.

The Dell Vostro is a nice machine, about two years old if I'm not mistaken. There were two or three configurations, Single Core Celeron, t8 Dual core and a t9 model, with 2gb -4 gb of ram and an Nvidia GeForce in them.

If your security program isn't opening, coupled with the problems you are already having... I would suggest you immediately back up anything that you don't want to lose. Whether you're having a software malfunction or a hardware failure, you're not going to want to lose any data.

It's hard to pin down things like this but without looking at it in person I'd start by assuming Windows has scrambled itself in some fashion. If you're security program won't load then there's four possibilities.... 1) virus has corrupted your system and is preventing your AV/FW programs from running.... 2) the AV/FW program is corrupted by some random chance of fate and needs to be removed/reinstalled...... 3) hardware failure is causing corruption and will need to be pinned down...... 4) something you've installed recently has overwritten or is colliding with your AV/FW process(es) and they're failing to start.

If it were my machine at this point I would back up the data and execute the system recovery program that's accessible on boot (one of the F keys it'll tell you... 'press <X> for recovery'). I would put it back to factory shipped software state and then see if my SL program runs properly (since it's the one that began your woes). If it still will not run, after a recovery.... it's probably hardware.... most likely a failing IGP chip or Memory module (most likely due to heat).

To say that today was a long and rough day is a bit of a gross understatement. There's nothing worse than that helpless feeling of wanting to fix something for someone but you ... just ... can't. I'd trade places if I could. Worrying is pointless and stupid but sometimes I feel that's all I'm able to do well right now.

In the long run, just being there and being supportive is worth much more. As Kaimi said, your friend is lucky to have you.

And yeah, it hurts to watch a loved one going through difficulties... I'm sorry to hear it.

I agree with you Amar. The second one here on ignore. I use that very sparingly but that photo was utterly uncalled for. For me, once someone crosses that line, they never are taken off - no second chances for me.

Here's something cheery. You can all laugh at me testing new looks.

Thank you Love and Lexxi for allowing me to ramble my thoughts last night, helped clear up a lot in my mind.

I looked for shooting stars last night but I think I was too early. Tonight should be the night.

Good morning,
Happy Thursday.

I thought this was kind of cool so you get to see it, too.
Happy 20th Birthday, Sue.
Quote:
On this day in 1990, fossil hunter Susan Hendrickson discovers three huge bones jutting out of a cliff near Faith, South Dakota. They turn out to be part of the largest-ever Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton ever discovered, a 65 million-year-old specimen dubbed Sue, after its discoverer.

Amazingly, Sue's skeleton was over 90 percent complete, and the bones were extremely well-preserved. Hendrickson's employer, the Black Hills Institute of Geological Research, paid $5,000 to the land owner, Maurice Williams, for the right to excavate the dinosaur skeleton, which was cleaned and transported to the company headquarters in Hill City. The institute's president, Peter Larson, announced plans to build a non-profit museum to display Sue along with other fossils of the Cretaceous period.

In 1992, a long legal battle began over Sue. The U.S. Attorney's Office claimed Sue's bones had been seized from federal land and were therefore government property. It was eventually found that Williams, a part-Native American and member of the Cheyenne River Sioux tribe, had traded his land to the tribe two decades earlier to avoid paying property taxes, and thus his sale of excavation rights to Black Hills had been invalid. In October 1997, Chicago's Field Museum purchased Sue at public auction at Sotheby's in New York City for $8.36 million, financed in part by the McDonald's and Disney corporations.

Sue's skeleton went on display at the Field Museum in May 2000. The tremendous T.rex skeleton--13 feet high at the hips and 42 feet long from head to toe--is displayed in one of the museum's main halls. Another exhibit gives viewers a close-up view of Sue's five foot-long, 2,000-pound skull with its 58 teeth, some as long as a human forearm.

Sue's extraordinarily well-preserved bones have allowed scientists to determine many things about the life of T.rex. They have determined that the carnivorous dinosaur had an incredible sense of smell, as the olfactory bulbs were each bigger than the cerebrum, the thinking part of the brain. In addition, Sue was the first T.rex skeleton to be discovered with a wishbone, a crucial discovery that provided support for scientists’ theory that birds are a type of living dinosaur. One thing that remains unknown is Sue's actual gender; to determine this, scientists would have to compare many more T.rex skeletons than the 22 that have been found so far.

It is the 71st Anniversary of "The Wizard of Oz" today.

That actually makes me feel young
