Would folks like me to do a few posts of example character creation to help you get started? Should have time this weekend. If you have a type of character you're interested in seeing created, let me know.

i was resiting this since it has been since jr high that i played ad&d

last year i found (and threw away) all my old hardcover books when i went homeless (dm guide, players guide, arcanists, oriental adventures, and a bunch more that i now regret throwing away... i thought my 20 sided dice days were over)

anyway, a couple questions i need to know before i commit (that is if you want me involved)

#1 is the assassin class available, specifically, thief/assassin hybrid? thats what i rolled back then (and was a rogue in wow) and that is how i play

#2 how serious is the commitment? can i opt out of some campaigns and participate in others if life interferes? as a character that would have to be evil, it would be in character to disappear from time to time, but i also know i would be gimped in xp if i missed too much which hurts even more as a hybrid?

#3 if i understand correctly, this will be played in non real time in a a forum. does that mean i can play on my droid if it will help me participate more often?

#4 do i have to RP? not really into that part, and if i am forced to, you better deny me or i might end up playing "boba fett" (see video below)

#5 any chance we could get a ravenloft campaign? that adventure still gets me all geeked out even if i dont remember much about it except for the main theme and the unorthodox setting (mystery style, not in a dungeon). i really like the way it got out of the genre pigeonhole while still following cannon

no matter what, good luck. although i am kinda sick of the genre (and might prefer the marvel game), i do get the nerd urge from time to time and understand why that genre is really the only one created so far to support rpgs

ps , if you (or anyone who have played tabletop rpgs) hasnt seen this video, please watch. yes it is subtitled, but it is worth it

eta: you using psionics?

also, if you are a stickler for weight, movement, and inventory issues i might decline (good way to ditch me). i hated the tedious calculations and opted for house rules of "magic bank pouch" to make the game actually fun instead of a simulation of realistic weight and inventory restrictions/calculations that did nothing to help the fun factor

#1 none of the stuff i have readily available has an assassin. there's a scout in the companion expansion that's not really a 'wilderness thief' type. play a rogue and i'll look up poisons or something and make poison house rule.

#2 there will be an ooc chatter thread alongside the active game thread that will deal with ooc stuff like 'i'm busy. find something to keep my character occupied' to 'ok this is dumb i'm out' in which case your character has a massive aneurysm mid fight.

#3 everyone is expected to check in and see what's up every 3 days. if it's longer, mention in the ooc thread

#4 You don't have to RP. you can just report what you're doing and leave it at that.

#5 I have a bunch of modules and a half baked overarching plot already, so it's not gonna switch to ravenloft. the basic premise of the world is pretty set.

thanks for the well wishes.

no psionics

and you'll all have magical mules to carry your shit on. what time it is in game might be important sometimes, but not something i'm going to keep a careful ledger of.

I think it was last year when I actually played D&D for the first time (not counting DDO, which doesn't really count anyway). I had a lot of fun (as a snaggle-toothed half-orc/quarter-elf/quarter-human monk).

I'll look into the rules, but for now you can count me in.

Ok at this I'm going to say no more players joining on for a while. Being realistic about player attrition, there's going to be slots free eventually.

OK Character Examples got caught this weekend by everything else I needed done. I might actually limit the # of character types available and do one for each that players can choose to clone for their character as an archetype.

I'd do a basic character sheets how you want em guide too.

And Mulch, I have the Ravenloft sourcebooks. It is a very neat setting. Not sure if he wants to deal with the overhead though as it adds a lot to DM'ing (Sanity check sanity check sanity check sanity check)

I've posted the official ruleset, and class spellbooks over yonder. The base rules are only 5 pages. Spellbooks are 2 or 3 pages per class.

Rules in various stages of disarray on the workbench:

Poisons.
Multi-classing.

The setting is based out of the city of Bala Ceri, the last glowing ember of civilization on the Storm Coast, who's jungles have swallowed entire empires.

Rule clarification. Initial health is well explained. How does this scale up with level?

I'm wondering basically are casters going to be overpowered or gimped to shit.

Everyone gets a flat +3 per level. My feeling is this is gonna make magic users a little OP but it will work out in the long run as everyone will end up a little OP. (The simplication rules I settled on are based a lot of D&D 3.5th ed)

So I"m checking in to check in.

We're using old rules right, so no specialty classes or any of that stuff they introduced in AD&D2e+ yes? My preference is towards offensive magic user types with a heavy does of necromancy (reads Warlock). I've always played twisted caster types cause they are fun.

Races? Any chance of pulling a half drow elven hottie outta the hat?

Speaking of rolling, which system are we using? The ones I am familiar with are

- roll 4d6 and take the top three for your stat score (multiply times each stat)

- roll 3d6 for each score and then reroll anything under 9

- roll 3d6 for each and then if you don't like them you have a two chances to reroll each score (yahtzee style).

Usually we were allowed to rearrange sores to match up pre-reqs (like obivously I want high Int for Mage so I might swap my crappy 13 int roll with my awesome 18 str roll).

Or are we using a one-shot what you roll is what you play system (which can always prove interesting and can be very entertaining if you have the right people involved)?

We're using a plugin for the forum right (otherwise I roll all 6's I swear, I just rolled them right now! )

We're rolling 4d6 times 3 and discarding lowest. If there's nothing above 13, I'm declaring a mulligan and people can reroll.

Sounds kewl. Are we going all out with encumbrance rules and such are are we just gonna apply common sense on stuff like that to keep the flow up?

i.e. My brother played with this guy once who had a warhorse that, when examined, turned out to be carrying like 2 fucking tons of shit. There was enough shit on that horse to supply a small platoon of soldiers. The kicker was he still wanted the horse to run at full speed, and once used a riding landbased roll to attempt to keep his mount from bolting when a lightning bolt struck a nearby tree (like any horse is gonna hang around after that).

It all ended up with a ritual burning of character sheets on the lawn before they kicked him out of the game. Those boys take their DnDz srsly.

Ah ha good times. My brother has some odd friends.
