Default The Years of Rice and Salt

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Years_of_Rice_and_Salt

by Kim Stanley Robinson

It's a fascinating alternate history, where 99% of Europe dies off from the Black Plague rather than 30%... Christianity becomes a curious side-note in the world where Islam and the Chinese dominate.

It's a great read featuring a group of people who reincarnate through history.

Has anyone else here read it?

I'm cutting back on paper hard covers and buying Kindle versions instead. It's half the price for a new book, and it's much more convenient.

The only reason I still buy regular books in 10 percent Co-op discount.

Yes, but you are starving babies. All for price and convenience!

Why are you throwing this in Char's face? It's a quote from Trout, one that Char didn't even press "agree" to.

I'm not. I don't see anything wrong with Char buying those books that way.

That's kind, Envoy.

Y'all are lucky I stopped where I did. I could go back and find DOZENS of more examples of people buying things for time and cost and convenience, many of them on line.

And I may yet do that.

Edit: I forgot. You are one of those against buying from Amazon. And I quote:

Those around me are all buying from Amazon, too. Including the people here.

Envoy, I do not make fun of you, and really wouldn't make fun of anybody.

If that's what you get off on, then what can I say.

If you weren't running around, starting up the same thing in multiple threads and acting like a little kid with their face all red and flustered and angry, none of this would be brought up.

I don't make fun of you. On the other hand, your behavior leaves it's mark when you run around, acting silly like this. We know what to expect. There isn't much else to say.

So why don't you get the HELL back in that other thread, if you are so concerned with behavior, and say even the MINUTEST something in defense of me?

I'm gonna continue to run around and act silly until it's out of my system, or when Trout apologizes, whichever comes first.

Or not . . . I'm getting tired of it.

I don't even post in the political threads anymore and now it comes here. No clue what brought it here, but I don't really care. At all.

Also, can we have a nice alternate history thread?

I love Worldwar by Harry Turtledove for its great combination of solid WWII history and science fiction. Starting off with a b-movie premise "Lizard-like aliens invade in the middle of the Second World War and force humanity to work together to fight a common threat," it quickly develops an interesting cast of characters and a great driving premise. It's better if you know more about the details of the actual war.

The sequel Colonization is quite interesting, too.

An FYI for you Coco. I'm disabled and the kindle has allowed me to read again. Until this I have been getting "expensive" audio books.

It's kind of hard to tell with you sometimes. ^.^
It's not just the convenience of buying via the net. It's also easier for me to use. Holding an open book while in bed is almost impossible for me. Kindles are easier and you can get cases that have lights and prop on a tripod . For me these are god sends. Not to mention the Font sizing!

Don't let it get you down, Zorena. She's pissed at me and she's just lashing out and thrashing around on the floor like a little kid throwing a temper tantrum. I'm sorry you got caught in the cross fire. Once I put her on ignore, I wasn't a good target anymore because she couldn't throw walls of text at me and lie about what I'd said anymore.

She's a simpleton. She's not bright enough to read what people are actually writing, so she purposely puts a spin on it that feeds her out of control narcissism. That's her fault, not anyone else's. So if it looks like she's picking on you at random, assume that she's pissed about someone else and is just making a passive aggressive comment to try to get them. Unless she quotes you, and then completely twists it into something it's not - then it's you. At that point, I suggest the ignore button.

BTW - I never said that you shouldn't buy from Amazon. I said she had a shitty, awful attitude. She's apparently making it crystal clear that I'm right.

Thanks this thread sort of had me confused for a bit. I like and generally get along with Coco and wasn't sure what anyone meant.
