Default Network troubles

OK, so I am working on our nephew's computer, an old Pentium machine running Vista. Everything was going well (this was a month or two ago) apart from lots and lots of garbageware, and then suddenly it lost its network connection.

Last night I started poking around it again; it shows its wired internet connection, but won't connect. It says there is no cable connected; I bought a brand new network cable, but no joy.

So, next thing to try; should I get a standalone NIC and try that? It's about the least expensive thing I can think of to try.

Genius by birth... slacker by choice.
The indiscriminate use of vulgar language is the linguistic crutch for inarticulate motherfucking sons of bitches.
I can figure the number of millimeters in a light year, but don't ask me to do algebra.
And everything is green and submarine...
