Avatar Portraits by Moi

I've done real life portraiture for more than two decades now... people come back and ask me to do second, third, and fourth pieces for their families, in everything from colored pencils to oils. I love doing it, it makes me happy to make my customers happy.

For the past year or so, Earwig has been doing AV portraits, for people who are into SL, WoW, and other such stuff. Somebody I know requested one for a loved one, and Earwig was too swamped to do it, so I am. And I'm really very happy about it.

I think it will be a lot of fun.

I started out doing sci-fi/fantasy art many many moons ago- was big into Roger Dean, among others- and so I will enjoy going back in time and "playing" again in between my "grown up" "serious" art.

And then I decided, why not? I should just roll with this.

So I'm hanging out my shingle- will do avatar portraits, or pen/paper game drawings, or other such representations. I'm pretty f'ing good if I do say so myself.

Prices range from $40 for a basic colored cgi piece or [RL] charcoal/ pencil sketch to $120 for a fully inked [RL] piece, to $200 for a basic oil painting [16"x 20"]. Small character GIF animations also available.

More characters in the piece = higher price.
More complexity = higher price.
Shipping included on anything small enough to go via regular USPS rates.

Our mutually negotiated price gets you:
1. Preliminary roughs.
2. Secondary [heading towards done] work, which I then tweak to your preferences.
3. Finals.

Payment in advance for anything under $100, installments available for more expensive work.

I take Paypal or checks, the latter has to clear my bank before I do any work.

Negotiations are welcome, barter is welcome.

Message me with an email if interested and I'll get in touch.

I could use the work right now- am saving up for materials to do my cow series/ Little Heap on the Prairie repairs.

This is a little something I did twenty years ago, on a 3'x 5' piece of masonite with an airbrush:

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o...art/dragon.jpg

I'm much better at making art now than I was then, and I can do pretty much ANYTHING w/ cgi. :smoke:

If I still played SL....

Or had the money.....

I'd take you up on this at the drop of a hat.

Well, like I said, I'm willing to barter. Say, for something like...a future crash-pad for a night or two should Matt and I ever get to make a trip to Ecosse? I'd need that in writing, of course... :)

Lucifer Baphomet 01-25-2011 09:43 PM

You seriously think if you guys were over here I wouldn't fold the sofa-bed down for you?

I hear it is the HOTTEST thing in Scotland!

Jen 01-26-2011 12:47 AM

Well, I would trade for a cheesetoast DEMONSTRATION, as long as I got to wear the asbestos suit...

A few old things- just realized I haven't put any out there in a long time:

Pencil: [something like this goes for $20]:

Charcoals: [about $40][20" x 24"]:

Oils: [about $200-300][20"x 24"]:

...trying to dig up some other examples, but they're buried somewhere, and I have to go do some work elsewhere. So bye for now...

I commissioned Jen to do these for my lady. I heartily endorse this product/service.

Thank you, Sir!

In similar yet slightly different news, I'm finally getting my Etsy together. I am slow to do this stuff, I would much rather just do the artwork and be done, but selling has to happen or I can't afford to make art. So. Etsy. Yeah.

I'll get there...
:)

Currently I have a bunch of roughs, some oil paintings, a couple of mixed media pieces, and an offer to do commissioned portraits up.

Have to get some nicer graphics together too, for down the road... But for now, it's a start.

Yay!

It'd be great if you could do something like this down the road:

http://www.etsy.com/listing/63883615...e_id=200228559

- where you can post pictures of what it might look like hung in a room - I think that really helps sell a picture!

Jen 03-07-2011 10:32 AM

Thanks very much for the idea, Ayu!

I did some "detail" photos to show the layers of color and brushwork- something I've not done before. My stuff looks ten different ways depending on light and distance...

I'll get after that idea sometime later this week- for now I have a bunch of housepaint and roughs to do, and only so much in the batteries.

But great idea!
:)

I seriously need to hire a cover artist for Dark Mercury, actually. I had one...a damned good one too, but she flaked and disappeared on me.

We should talk.

As a fallback, if you and Jen don't click, her daughter Earwig has talents in this area

Thank you, I'm honored.

I'll pm you with contact info- that said, I'm toast this afternoon and therefore pretty much incoherent, so don't expect a cogent response before tomorrow! :)

Yes... AND she's swamped right now [thank God/dess! :thumbsup2: ]

Jen 03-10-2011 07:25 PM

Put The Big Un into Etsy... Matt doesn't want me to try to sell it, but until he comes up with the million bucks he promised me for it, it's fair game. :)

Somebody "treasured" my cow sketch #17 on Etsy! I feel like

Jen 03-17-2011 12:02 PM

Prepping a 30"x 40" canvas: I work with an Impressionist color wheel, using layers of color. The modelling paste adds texture for later layers of colors to break against each other. I'm not going to post the actual artwork here, just thought I'd show what goes into a canvas before it even gets started:

http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._6597702_n.jpg

The finished layer of modelling paste [photoshopped to show the texture more clearly- the actual deal is less "jaggedy"].

More as it happens...

Cocoanut Koala 03-17-2011 12:05 PM

What do you mean you're not going to post the actual artwork here?

I protest!

This is unfair! We like to see your projects as they go along, and artwork is no different!

Well, thanks for that, however this being a commission, I'd have to ask the express permission of the client first. :)

I sure how they aren't a jerk :p

Jen 03-17-2011 12:25 PM

To soothe Coco's ruffled feathers, I'll post a different painting I am just barely into later on today [part of the "cow series" of Kansas landscapes]. But right now I have to run off to paint somebody's walls for a few hours so's I can pay the electric bill later on this month... :P . LATER!

Jen 03-17-2011 02:57 PM

Underpainting [purple] and first layer of some KS winter trees and fenceline. [housepaint client forgot to buy primer, so I did what little I could and came home].

btw I'm not ENTIRELY certain what you're saying here, but I'm running w/ the assumption that you don't think they're jerks. Maybe...? ...Have you been taking language immersion classes from Monna again?

Fjlknski?

Jen 03-19-2011 12:48 PM

Getting my underpainting done for the big commission... [was going to say, "Getting my underpaints on, but thought that was too personal...]

http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._6640757_n.jpg

This is one of them thar fancy canvasses with the 1.5" finished edges you don't have to frame!

http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._5097376_n.jpg

Most of a tube of raw sienna later... [please ignore messy studio!]

http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._6988586_n.jpg

Textcha!

http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._6154693_n.jpg

eta: In between the modelling paste and the underpainting is a thick coat of gesso. [in some cases, where the texture's really rugged, two thin ones is good, but in this case, one did the job].

Gesso is white, like the modelling paste, so I figured it was silly to put up photos of it. : /

JohnnyVann 03-19-2011 01:40 PM

Ok, but you ARE wearing underpants, right?

Jen 03-19-2011 01:54 PM

I'll never tell.

Kick Frenzy 03-19-2011 08:33 PM

Seeing this progression is making me miss painting.
It's been a couple years since my last painting, I think.

I know the immediate reaction is "So go paint something, dumbass", but I just don't have a decent spot or easel for that matter. I used to just lean the canvas against my dresser and paint there, back before there were two sets of water/food bowls for the cats I didn't have back then. So, I have to wait until I get around to cleaning the basement and making room to make an artsy area.

I like your base stuffs, Jen. It's always exciting to see a painting evolve, wondering what each step will mean to the end result. Not much I can really say about it since it's just the underpainting so far, but thanks for sharing and I hope we get to see more! :)

ETA: Have you gotten any avatar commissions yet?

Jen 04-03-2011 11:14 AM

Sorry, Kick, I didn't see this before.
Yes, I had one avatar commission, a couple of little bizcard-logo-flyer-etc commissions, and then this big painting.

I would love to have many more of the avatar commissions- I find that sort of thing to be tons of fun, and I'm wrapping up the housepaint gig sometime this week, so I'll have time to do more art-work, which is what I'd prefer to be doing [my batteries last longer for mental work than physical, too]. :)

Today I have some time to do work around my own house, so I'll be doing more to the painting and doing some more to my cabinets too. Woke up at 4:30 and did some tweaking on my gallery in Clearwing before the day started... will post photos elsewhere [eta: here: http://www.secondcitizen.net/Forum/s...951#post348951 ]

I keep reading this thread title as "Avatar Portraits by Mo!" instead of "Moi" and I'm thinking "Hey Mo, hey Mo! Nyuk nyuk nyuk..."
