See, this is the kind of thing that has me incensed. This notion that law-abiding, useful citizens have NO RIGHTS AT ALL. No rights, just endless, picayune and costly obligations.

http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2010/09/...me-with-ak-47/

This guy had better goddamn good and well get off, and with no fines or anything. In fact, they should pay his freaking lawyer's fees.

I don't care if they're just trying to cross the t's and dot the i's. It's not an anomaly. It's just one more in a long series of treating good citizens like crap.

And the message we are supposed to get is that we ARE crap, and that we should be happy to just be allowed to exist, while criminals and crooks ride roughshod over us. In fact, we don't even have any right to exist - we should just be grateful if we happen to be allowed to continue to.

And why do they do this? Because they CAN. They can because law-abiding citizens are easy to get. We're the ones they can find, punish, and fine. They know we are going to cooperate.

It's like my girlfriend said years ago about the smoking laws: "They can't do anything about real criminals, so they go after non-criminals."

I'd far rather deal with the law and go to jail than I would sit down and die or watch my family die. Yet - that is what the government expects us to do, and this case is just one more example of it.

If you ask me, being expected to actually die is just taking it a step too far.

The first comment to that piece says it all for me, and could be speaking for me:

"elian

"I’ve got news for these courts and the police as well, and they had vest get it loud and clear and quickly so. You can wallow in your 'laws' all you want, but what you are not going to do is keep people from defending themselves even if that means shooting someone who threatens our lives. Your laws kill people every day you morons. Get it right or get out of the way. Believe it."

I will add, they've got so many f'ing laws, each and every one of us law-abiders is guilty in some way, for something. If they want you, they can get you. And that is the whole point of it.

One of the reasons this pisses me off so much is that I am a law-abider to an absurd degree, and have always been (with the exception of doing drugs in my youth). Taxes, walking on the grass, you name it - I've obeyed the law. It always seemed important to me not only in terms of keeping an unassailable record, but in ethical terms.

It's the ethical part that is slipping away from me now. Well, actually, I think that part is actually gone now, at least as far as taxes are concerned. I know darn well that I am no longer "doing my share" but I'm being looted by the criminals in Congress (who don't bother to pay theirs, and that includes the Secretary of the Treasury).

I still obey the law, simply because I'm cut out that way. But I'll be danged if I'm going to take the law to mean I'm supposed to sacrifice me and my family for it.

Like Elian said, they can wallow in their [vast, endless, and humongously oppressive plethora of] "laws" all they want. But when good, useful, law-abiding and tax-paying citizens like me stop paying any attention to the government and its laws - stop taking it or them seriously, and view them with little but disgust and disrespect - then Washington, we have a problem.

It was around this time last year mulch and I were camping while visiting Freya and kavik during our epic roadtrip. I was fast asleep at night in the tent when I was suddenly awoken by a SPLAT of something on my face. I mumbled 'what the fuck...' as I grabbed at it, tore it off my face, and flung my arm to my side (thwacking mulch in the process) to see what it was. I felt it wriggle free and hop out of my hand, instantly telling me beyond a doubt it was a toad. Mulch is half awake now, after being whacked, and asked me why I hit him. I told him a freaking toad just landed on my face. 'You were just dreaming, go back to sleep...' he mumbles as he falls asleep. We both woke up in the morning at the same time and mulch says 'you had a nightmare last night about toads, do you remember?' I told him 'it wasn't a dream, a freaking toad jumped on my face!' He rolled his eyes as he said 'you were just dreaming' as he rolled over to get out of the tent. He suddenly stopped and was like 'oh. There is a toad here by the door'.Flash

Flash forward to this morning. We have these... bugs... around here. They look like the biggest effing cockroaches you have ever seen. They call them 'date beetles.' Unlike cockroaches, you find them randomly on their own, not in nasty little packs. But they are HUGE.
Once again, I was fast asleep. I was awakened by something crawling behind my ear to the back of my neck. I instantly knew what it was before my brain even processed what was going on. In one fell swoop I grabbed it off my neck and threw it across the room, this time letting off yelps. Mulch jumped up asking what happened and all I could stammer was 'one of those huge things on my face!' Lights went on as we searched for it, mulch didn't even question me this time. He found it (though I couldn't see it without my glasses) grabbed it, threw it in the toilet and flushed it.

And these are only the things I have CAUGHT crawling on my face :( I actually adore frogs and toads, so those were no big deal. Adorable, if anything. But giant flying cockroaches?! No effing way!

I am making a decree to all critters out there; my face is OFF LIMITS without my express consent or invitation to touch it. Except dogs. You guys can still sneak one, ONE sloppy kiss at a time to me when I am not looking. Any more than that and I gotta wash all the bits of dogfood and ass off. That ain't cool.

Of course my RL alt belongs to some beekeeping forums!

One of the other members posted a story, and my RL alt wanted to share it.

See, it's the time of the year when bee colonies start preparing for winter. They arrange things inside the hive and slow down brood production and, well do various things. One of the things they do is kick all the drones - the males - out of the hive. Drones have one purpose: to mate with virgin queens from other hives. They fly out everyday all through their lives, seeking to do this one thing. If they succeed, they die instantly as their - uh, tackle is ripped off in midair and they tumble to the ground. If they do not succeed, they return to the hive where they don't do anything else. They don't forage, they don't clean anything. They can't feed themselves and don't even have a sting so they can't defend the hive. They can't make wax. They can't do anything, literally, except mate.

Obviously they have no function at all during the winter when no queens are flying, so - out the hive they go. The workers actually force them out.

The poster at the bee forum got to see this today. Typing isn't his forte, so bear with the unusual style. Excerpt:
...Well, i took my Fav Bev and decided to go and see what the girls were doin up on the hill. It was getting late so the girls were rollin in. I love it. Then, on my one hive on the far left,,I noticed some activity. Just different. so, I focused and it was the girls wrestling with a drone. It was a big guy and it took three to drag him out and leave him the end of the landing board. The,,,another scuffle,,,this was a little guy and it only took one girl to work him out. Then,,,,,,it dawned on me,,,,,It's Labor day for us,,,and Drone Toss day for Bees. We kick back and they amp up I continued to observe and a couple more came out. You almost had to feel sorry for them. their loyalty to the hive,,,always there if there was a queen that needed service. Their reward ,,,,cast out,,man!!!! The one little guy that was on the edge of the landing board, just stayed there,,didn't move,,like,,well,,maybe I can sneak back in later. Or,,,just to be near the entrance for a little warmth later tonight when the temps drop. There were no guard bees around so I picked up the little stud. But,,I thought no,,,don't get close to the drones!!! As I brought him closer to my face,,,I couldn't help but be drawn in by his big black eyes,,,,,I talked to him,,,,I said,"What did you expect,,,livin with all these women,,,being fed on demand,,,flying all the time looking for queens to mate with,,You knew it had to come to an end,,,,, It was sad,,he couldn't look me in the eye as he knew I was right. My 57 years of experience against his ,,,,well,,,,,six weeks. I decided to give him a reprieve for how ever long,,, I put him on the landing board of the hive next to his..,,maybe he had some relatives,,,apparently so,,,they took him in. Then,,,,,I felt bad cause,,he's,, going to have to go through this again ,,,,and I won't be there.
