View Full Version : Real ID
http://us.battle.net/realid/faq.html
I just don't think this is a great idea. You may be friends with someone one minute and enemies the next but only now they have your real name. Also any friends of theirs have your real name. It doesn't specify first and last, but still an internet stalker's wet dream.
. When you become Real ID friends with another player, you will be sharing your real name and opening up new communication options with that player. In addition, players who are Real ID friends with that player will be able to see your name in a “friends of friends” list, which allows people to be able to quickly send Real ID friend requests to others they may know.

Yeah, if you're that good friends with your guildies, you'd already have their name/number. If not, at least they won't stalk and kill you when you cause a wipe in the dungeon daily.

StarCraft 2 and Battle.net to Integrate Facebook Features (http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/05/starcraft-2-and-battle-net-to-integrate-facebook-features/)
The only feature mentioned in the announcement, however, is the ability to add StarCraft playing Facebook friends to your Battle.net friends list. The new feature will be added to the StarCraft 2 beta in "the near future" and should be available to all players when the full game hits retail this July (http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/03/starcraft-2-wings-of-liberty-zerg-rushing-retail-july-27/).
It's worth noting that the press release refers to the friend finding feature as "the first step in integration," so it sounds like there will be more Facebook features added over time. As long as we're not flooded with status updates every time someone gets "pwned," we're all for it.

This is incredibly disappointing. :(
I was really hoping that the Friends List would work x-server. I've run some really great dungeons with some randoms and we all agreed we'd use this tool when it came out to keep running some more great dungeons. They were cool, but I don't see why they need my real name just to keep a group together.
I'm sad that Blizzard is implementing a tool that is, to me, broken right from the start.

Man, screw a whole truckload of that noise. Sure many of my WoW guildies know my real name, but no way do I want just any yahbo I may group with to know that nor do I wish to know theirs. Good thing this is optional.

"If you are using Real ID, your mutual Real ID friends, as well as their Real ID friends, will be able to see your first and last name."
I don't really get this - why would it be good? It just seems... undesirable.

How are they going to know it is your real first and last name?

If you follow the ToS then your account is supposed to be your Real First/Last Name for billing purposes and such. That's the name that is linked to your Battle.net account through your battle.net email address.
"If you are using Real ID, your mutual Real ID friends, as well as their Real ID friends, will be able to see your first and last name."

I never said it was good, I said I don't think it's good. I think it's a really bad idea, especially considering all the hacking problems, stalking issues as well as the age group of many of the players in the game.
Especially since friends of your friends can get your information. Say I do use it with someone I trust but they have given their info to god and everyone, now your privacy is at risk because other people aren't as cautious as you.
I don't think it will go through as explained, I really can't see the community not screaming about this.

I have read as much as I can find regarding this. I too am disappointed in what appears to be the current incarnation of the tool. That being said as with all Blizzard things it is subject to change once the massive amount of qq hits them in the face.
Kavik I might have misread but I thought one of the functions was a wow friends list. Meaning you would be able to add people from other realms without giving the real id info.

I may have mis-read, but in the lower section of that page I believe it stated that the WoW Friends List won't work x-server. I'll have to look later since I can't see it from work.

I never thought YOU thought it was good.
But SOMEONE must think it should at least appear to appeal to players, although all I can see is that private information becomes dispersed so the company can sell it and then say, "No, we didn't sell it - lots of people have it and could have."

The only people I talk to in WoW who I want to know my real name already do.
This would have been great for reconnecting with some friends that have transferred off my server, but it's useless as it is right now.

I plan on adding you, Fester :p YOU ALREADY KNOW ANYWAYS!
I have to admit, I do like the RealID so far, the only things I don't like are my original complaints of people being able to see friends of friends and the use of first and last names. Granted I've only shared my info with a very small group of people and I take some comfort knowing that if someone randomly saw my name, unless they asked they'd have no idea who's toon was attached to it.

Yeah it is not as iffy as I thought it would be. Plus now I can poke and and Dae while I am working on Sin on Grizzly Hills and you guys are on Maelstrom. (Yes, I so need to get back over there and lvl that shaman. Just have so much to do:D )
:stars:
Well I now have a level 17 shaman cooling her heels and a level 20 rogue sitting and waiting to level with someone. I've been so bored in wow even making alts is no fun. :p

I didnt realize you could see each other's names.
Won't be adding anyone else based on that. I really dont want to compromise anyone else's privacy or my own by having them on my list.
One of my friends pressured me into it, but its ok because he had my RL email already. I know he is cool, but I can tell he is just a social networking ho cause his realID friend list is already a mile long XD

There was a warning that came with the advent of this feature that tells users to only send a RealID invite to those they trust.
Thus far, only one person has my RealID - and it is staying that way until I can track down the rest of my offline friends who also have WoW accounts.
My personal criteria is this: If you already know my real name - you get a RealID invite. At least that way you'll know where I have characters at and can join me if you like and vice versa.
I actually like that function: It saves me the trouble of asking what server(s) they are on.

I posted a message on the WoW forums suggesting that they add an "alias" field to RealID which would display that name in place of the account's billing name if it was filled in.
For example, on mine I could enter "Wakinyan" or "Phoenix59" and you'd see that instead of the name of a poet who died in World War I.
If you'd like to express support for this idea, the thread is here (http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=25626573193&postId=256239470680&sid=1#0).

heh I was going to reply in support, but forgot I got a perma ban on the forums.
Also when Kita added me I right clicked her name and selected friends. When it showed the people, which was one other at the time, I clicked the name and apparently a addon I had auto requested for me. It was frustrating because I didnt want to add them just clicked the name. I know what did it and the author had already fixed it but I hadnt updated yet.
The best suggestion I have seen was the ability to hide your friends. But then again once you give one person the email and you have mutual friends you no longer give out emails. It just shows up as a real name. Which is fine by me. Now some people(cough mulch cough) will have issue with this. In that case I say dont use the realid option as it gives more info than you want given out.

New features of Real ID
Nethaera (http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?sid=1&topicId=27026374133) said: We'd like to make you aware of the new Real ID-related privacy options we've introduced to Battle.net. These options provide Real ID users with additional tools for customizing the service based on their preferences, enabling the ability to opt in or out of the Real ID "Friends of Friends" and "Add Facebook Friends" features or to turn off Real ID altogether.
Real ID offers an optional, convenient way for keeping in touch with real-world friends you know and trust, whether they're playing World of Warcraft, StarCraft II, or one of our future games. The "Friends of Friends" and "Add Facebook Friends" features provide you with even more options to stay connected while you play by making it easier for real-life friends to locate each other on Battle.net. You can easily enable or disable these features through your Battle.net privacy settings by logging in to your Battle.net account at http://www.battle.net/.
