Yeah when he started having heart issues and such a season or so back I figured he'd not do well as he didn't quit smoking or improve his health at all that I could see. It's a rough life they live and he did it "HARD" w/ciggies, coffee and booze. I really liked him though, his personality and humor. Still sucks. :rip:

I wanted to reach thru the tv and slap him - "Snap out of it!!" (OK, I was awake for THAT part!"

I think most of them smoke out there on the sea... I imagine they need to do somithing to settle their nerves out there and they can't drink. I have a friend that works on one of the crab boats and it isn't something that he would wish on anyone. Yep he smokes too.

I think it's nerves and the boost it gives them to help them stay awake long hours at the wheel or on deck, along w/piles of coffee and such. Can't eat crab or lobster or any of that ocean-caught seafood now w/out sincere recognition of the effort taken to catch the lil buggers and get them to my plate.

Still, I loved his personality and sass, he was way too young to go and leave his family behind. I hope the boys can full it together and continue on.

It's the first part. I remember during salmon season trollers worked from light to light during an opening. As the season is in the summer and you're fishing off the Alaska panhandle that means long days with usually only 4 hours bunk time. You cook and eat while running to an anchorage.
I had the foc'sle bunk and actually could sleep through the anchor being winched up. You learned to run on raw nerves, cigs and coffee as the season and the openings were small windows to get the fish in.

Most of the fishermen I knew on the East Coast wound up doing a lot of heroin- it was tragic. But that's not the Arctic by a long shot. I don't think you could get away with zoning out on the heavy stuff there, you have to be alert.
