View Full Version : Building a Newbie Area?

In the old SL forums, and in SLA I posted a question: "What would you do if you were give a region to build a community project?" While most people talked about building homes, castles, forests, caves, etc some people came up with some good ideas.
Now I'm posting again, based on feedback, I'm going ahead with it. The region is ordered (Full region btw) and on its way.
Now my question is: "What exactly would you put in an area designed to teach newbies about SL, and also help to keep them coming back?"
I'm thinking kinda like a Community gateway type thing/help island/orientation island but done right.
Suggestions? Ideas? (I don't have all the answers here...)

Wow, awesome idea and I applaud you for private funding it. I've had too many beers and pokes at LL tonight to add to this intelligently but will re-visit tomorrow. Glad to have you in our community!

Thanks :)
I guess technically I am funding it myself, although its coming out of the "profits" of my rental business.

I have no suggestions or ideas as it has been too long. So I just bump thread.
The only thought I had was "gee, it would be fun to smush some rats again"

I don't know if this is at all helpful but you could take a look at a couple of orientation areas I set up.

Suggestions? Ideas? (I don't have all the answers here...)Kudos to you for giving it a go Mitzy. My suggestion is simply have a sandbox, most new people want to start playing with prims or at the very least unpacking boxes of stuff they get. A sandbox is also a good way of forming a place where people can meet and chat.

1. Turn on Damage
2. Allow build with no auto return
3. provide link to Goon Script Library in Notecard
4. Erect giant statue of Plastic Duke
5....
6. Profit!
/runs away very fast

Joking aside, that's very cool. Good luck with it! Noobs really do need better than they get....

My word of advice... Don't hand out free penis unless you want newbies attempting to hump you all day long.
This sounds like a great idea. Please let us know when it's finished and ready so I can send newbs your way.
