Ok, ok, ok, I'm on AU!

http://www.avatarsunited.com/avatars/madamemaracas

Dunno what I'll do with it but ok there it is.

If I were still active in other MMO's I would do those other characters/avies but I've not logged in elsewhere for about a year, so I don't see the point for me to set up my defunct Age of Conan, EverQuest II and World of Warcraft avies, much less my There.com one. Doubt I'll do my SL alts either.

LL can shove this shite up their arses till their sphincter ruptures, and their pants become a bloadsoaked mess.

What were they thinking, buying this sad Facebook clone and then pushing it through their blog.

I figure I'll reserve my name, who knows what you guys would do w/it if I didn't, and then it will sit, parked, like about 20 other whatevers I've signed up for over the years. I don't see any utility for it at all, just like SLprofiles. Sign up,fill in the standard bio, once every few months log in and accept or decline trolls ... er ... friends requests, ignore it otherwise.

Madame Maracas
01-30-2010, 07:23 AM
It is funny to me how someone as "tough" as Prok can feel railroaded by an option, I didn't see a single thing that suggested one NEEDS to sign up for AU. Did I miss the AU waterboarding on the Lido deck?

I wonder if Linden Lab/Avatar United gave Emerald access to their participant data.

Me, too.

I'll always remember: just before signing up for SL, I had found the original "Guide to SL" book, and I eventually (mostly through the interactions on SCI) met a lot of the people profiled in the book (Aimee, Desmond, etc). But when I finally went inworld, Ordinal was one of the very first people I actually met. We had hot, passionate sex on the floor of Ordinal Enterprises. It's yellow - not flashy - but yeah, the text does change alot. I can get him to change the yellow to something less glaring.

But about Avatar United: There is fearmongering going on about spoofing people's vatar's names and business - since Linden Lab put no security in place. Perhaps you should make an avatar there and the Second Citizen Group just to bookmark it so no one else messes around with you.

I bookmarked all of my important groups there. And I have no real intention of using that site. But I believe Linden Lab is going to put more weight behind this site in the near future.

Fellow avatar,

We are sorry if you've had trouble login in.
Ever since the announcement of Linden Lab's acquisition of Avatars *
United we've experienced ahuge surge in traffic and sign ups. To deal *
with the increased load on our system we had to upgrade our database a *
process during which a limited set of accounts, including yours, were *
lost. We are sorry about this but unfortunately need to ask you to *
sign up again using the same email address.

We are regret the caused inconvenience as you will have to recreate *
your account. Rest assured however that all coins you have lost will *
be restored once you have signed up again and if you have created *
artwork (wallpapers) we will be able to connect those creations to *
your new account.

As a token of our appreciation of your understanding of the situation *
we would furthermore like to grant you a bonus of 1000 Coins. These *
Coins will be added to your account during the coming days after *
you've signed up. If you wish to have them earlier, notify us on info@avatarsunited.com

Hoping for your understanding.

I'm not finding where you can create groups? Assist?

You have to turn on Groups first:

Account (top right)
Details and settings (Tab)
Click on Groups
Then "Enable group functionality"

You'll then have a "Groups" option at the top.

bizarrely, you have to go to somewhere in "my account" and click the "activate groups features" or something checkbox.

Presumably because Groups are even more broken than the rest of the site, and this way if anyone complains they can say "hey, you didn't have to turn on the Groups features!".

Or something... O.o

I tend to think she (and/or at least her typist) will still be around, just doing new stuff that she isn't tired of yet. As I said in the comments on her weblog posting, I hope I am in the blast radius of whatever she does next. :) She is so cool.

Of course I am th' Perpetual Optimist, but to me her departure reads more like one of those natural points where someone bright has been doing the same thing for too long and needs to drop it all and do new stuff; rather than a "SL isn't a fun place anymore so all the fun people are leaving" sort of thing...

China pictures? Did you blog them? How long was the flight? Any strip searching at the airport? Did you see a military presence?

I can't believe you didnt start a thread on China.

Jet Lag.I'm still deciding where to put pictures. The pollution was horrible so I was less than tempted to take any shots since they'd all be nothing more than a brown haze. (._.)

I have a good collection from my weekend break in Hong Kong, though. The air was cleaner there. (^_^)

Flying in was something like 15 hours and the return trip was 10. The final 3 hours to my Taipei layover was riddled with turbulence, though. I'm sure half the plane lost their dinner. I think I woke up for a moment to watch a few people hork in their bags. (._.)

My VP had a good tip about customs. There's a HongKong to mainland ferry that worked best to avoid going through multiple borders. The best part about it was the customs crew at the mainland ferry terminal couldn't care less what came through. They were too busy fiddling with their cell phones to worry about the silly Xray machine. =^-^=

Didn't see much military, but, the police had a booth-like-thing at nearly every street corner. Normally staffed with a guy that looked like he stole the uniform and rusty official motorcycle from someone else. (>_<)

My sleep schedule is surprisingly variable. No matter where I go, I always wake up at 4am. It's probably part of why I'm never late for work. (^_^)y

I found some expected internet difficulties. Going to Imageshack.us directly was fine. Going to Google.com then Imageshack.us would cause my connection to get reset. More than half of Google's image search results were blocked and following the remainder would lead to a reset connection. I could read Twitter, but, I couldn't log in. The forums worked fine though. (^_^)

I didn't do a forum thread about the trip, but, I did post about it and blog (via VPN to California, Blogspot was blocked) about the wonky internet access. And, plenty of Twitter Tweets when the access was available. =^-^=

http://imnotgoingsideways.blogspot.com/2010/01/interwebz-behind-red-curtain.html

It suddenly occurs to me that none of those other applications have "security verification" for specific names, either. Someone who's not you can set up an account in your name on Facebook, for example.

I don't understand why people could be so upset that Facebook is forbidding avatar accounts, and yet when LL offers something that's A) functionally no different from Facebook, B) no less secure, identity-wise, than Facebook, C) free, and D) COMPLETELY OPTIONAL, people are so incredibly horrified by it.

If you don't like it, don't sign up. If you're really that paranoid, or it's actually causing some confusion, just fit a little "I am not on AU" clause in your in-world profile.

Hell, I'm still getting Bank of America and Fifth Third Band phishing spam...These are SL users. I'm sure the phishers would be going after people with money. (^_^)y

SL Blips HUD for AvatarsUnited.com

SL Blips is an application for Avatars United (http://www.avatarsunited.com/) that enables you to display your Second Life related information on your Avatars United profile and send short messages (called "blips") from within Second Life which are then displayed on your Avatars United profile.

You can also easily set or update your home or business location directly from Second Life.

This HUD allows you to connect your Second Life avatar with your profile on Avatars United.

To use this HUD, you will also need to add the SL Blips (http://www.avatarsunited.com/apps/slblips) application to your Avatars United profile by going to

When creating your AU account - do NOT use your avatar age. The genius pool at LL/AU will delete you for being 5 years old.

Dear Avatars United Member,

We recently disabled and deleted your account, due to Avatars United age restrictions and/or other terms of use restrictions. We shall promptly make appropriate refunds for any virtual currency contained in your account, additional info on refunds should follow soon. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. If you have questions regarding this, please contact us at Avatars United, at support@avatarsunited.com.
Sincerely,
Avatars United
Dear Lisa,

We apologize for the recent problem of your deleted account. Due to
technical difficulties of our registration process, your account was
included in our efforts to properly enforce our Terms of Use.
We understand your concerns with this issue, and unfortunately we are
unable to restore your account at this time. You are now able to
recreate an account on Avatars United with your Second Life account
name, but you will have to use a different email to register. Please
make sure you use your personal date of birth to avoid any future
issues. We hope that you will rejoin Avatars United, as your
participation as a Second Life resident is extremely valuable to us.
Sincerely,
Avatars United Support at Linden Lab

AU allows multiple accounts to be established under the same name, just as Facebook does. The multiple accounts need only have different email addresses for each account. Example, there are several M Linden accounts, but presumably only one of them is the actual CEO of our dear LL.
