it's shit.
right, that out of the way I have a question...
When the writers all ganged together at the start of pre production.. and the first guy said "OK, the main character will be separated from his wife living alone and have a child who hates him, and does things like calls his dad by his first name, oh! and the ex wifes new guy is a smarm with a porsh and dubious but great job? (plastic surgion)"
why wasn't he fired on the spot for being an idiot?

The cost of special effects left little for the hiring of a decent scriptwriter?

See, here's my theory. Destruction movies should be like porn. Destructoporn. Just forget about any plot, character development or meaning. Destroy shit from opening frame to end credits. It's all anyone's there for. Boom, smash, kapow. Volcanoes erupting on people's faces. Earth-shaking orgasms of the tectonic kind. That's what I'm talkin' about.

we should make a list of the films that use this broken family trope... it sickens me.

:edit to remove lame humor falling flat:
2012 is the end of the Great Cycle of the Mayan Calendar. It's the end of the CYCLE, not the end of the world.

This film has all that... with exactly the same story as all the last... dad is shit... kid doesnt like... disaster happens, dad saves family, dad gets back to mum.
and a whole lot of offensive racial stereotypes filling in the rest.

I've heard that the Russian gal's flipping the bird instead of a gesture more appropriate to her native culture lent an air of inauthenticity to the movie.

Did someone go to a disaster movie for the plot?
EVER?
Are you outta yer damn tree?
pffft.
Bring on the asphalt ripping, improbable airplane antics, gap jumping stretch limos and I'm a happy camper, esp. w/great cameos by nutbags that buy it in the first 1/3 of the film!
I knew what I was in for and enjoyed it.
I pay to see big boom films on the big screen, plot driven stuffs, usually I will wait to see on cable.

Ok i wasnt the only one who thought "improbably airplane antics". :)
Pirate Radio guy "name left out on purpose* was great!
But please don't pay attention to the plot.
oh, I dunno, "day after tomorrow" had a small moral ENVIRONMENTAL DEATH TO ALL message. Constitutes a plot of sorts.

2012 was fun to watch.
Sure, the plot sucks and much of the science and situations are laughable, but that just adds to the fun. If it seemed real, it might be scary.

all they had to do was kill cusack and his stupid family at the end, then we'd all think this was a cool dark movie.

They don't make many cool dark movies because too few people go to see them a second time. Thus all must be happiness.
When The Road comes out on film, I expect it to be full of laughter of butterflies. My copy of the book was published in 2006 and there's a splash on the cover that says "Now a Major Motion Picture!" I can only assume that the last three years have been spent making it more acceptable to people who might see it over and over again.

Someone warned me that the ending wasnt a happy one. I was disappointed that they went the Disney route. I mean come on I wasnt expecting disaster NOT to happen. I have to ask that person what the heck they were talking about.
I thought it was a pretty dark movie so a dark ending would have been probably too depressing. And in 2yrs too inciteful.

From Dusk til Dawn, while not a disaster movie, does pretty much kill everyone off and there's no romatic pedo-hook up at the end. Very watchable. Lotta fun, carnage and great soundtrack.
Oh and Salma shimmying and slithering in next to nothing.
