So Trout and I went to a Ren Faire yesterday and I've always wanted to get into the SCA and do fun stuff on the weekends.
Is anyone here a member? Any newbie tips?

Society for creative adultery is more like it. I never did SCA but I still have most of my fair costume. The best advice I can give is splurge on the boots or your feet will literally hate you.

And invest in a good set of pouches.

And don't buy the clothing at the fair itself.

Find out if there's a local fighter practice.
Hang out and meet people (you don't have to be "in garb" for those.)

Oryx what kind of things do you like to do?
I've not been a member myself but this is mainly because what I've seen my friends go through who did belong. Basically fighting skill is prized above all else and to move up in rank you pretty much have to win at fighting. The literature is not going to tell you this but in every example I've seen this is the case. Which is not to say that crafting and heralding and the like aren't prized but if I were going to do that I would not seek out the SCA as a place to hone or be acknowledged for my craft.
That said, I know people in the SCA. They are on the East Coast but they might have useful advice and I can put you in touch.

Was involved through my ex for a couple of years. There are prizes and recognitions for arts and sciences, which can be anything from costuming to brewing to creating music. But as far as becoming king or queen (which, really, you don't want to do, not if you have a life) then fighting is the only game in town. I never did the fighting but I found people there to play music with, and it was something neat to play together by a campfire while people danced to it.
Society for Creative Adultery though? Haha :-) Not far off. But only if you want it to be that way.

i just found the recognition for the arts and sciences to be rather lame and secondary to the fighting. it was kind of like the second class citizens of the sca. there are better ways to get recognition for arts and sciences if that's what you want to do.

Whether it's lame depends on the person, I guess. Where I was, anyway, you would get a hand-written scroll as an award. To some people that meant a lot. If you're king or queen, your reward is that you must spend every weekend for the next six months attending some SCA event or other on your own dime. I'd rather take the scroll.

I don't think it's anything we want to take super-seriously. It just sounded like fun, and we thought we'd go to few meetings and see if we fit in, then take it from there. If they are going to be all sooper-serious role-play-no-humor nazis, then I'm just not going to enjoy myself at all.
I really don't think I can handle the combat aspect. My lower back has degenerated significantly over the past several years and is almost constantly in pain as it is. I really think the combat aspect would add stress that I just couldn't deal with.

:qft: I get the feeling that the arts and crafts are getting more popular, and since I'm not into combat either and don't care whether we ever rise in "rank," I'm hoping we can just have fun and dress up in cool clothes and maybe learn how to make cool stuff.
I've also heard that it can be "loose" as far as morals go, but hell, I figured that I made it through Second Life with my morals intact... besides, Trout and I would be doing it together.*
*Although I'm not sure that his idea for a "Hun Exchange Student" would go across well as a character...

The sex was not as crazy as I imagined! On the other hand, the discovery that this organization does Siege Weapons has got me hot and bothered.

I was thinking of weaver... :) We've already got the spinning wheel, and Trout can knit and I can crochet. All we need is a loom now. All those folks make their own clothes... maybe we can make the wool cloth for them.
Or Trout and I could do food preservation. We've got some good pickling recipes already.
Who knows? Lots to do out there.

Wow, blast from the past. A friend of mine wanted to get me involved with SCA back in the 70's, and I have yet to try it. I don't know if there are any chapters nearby, but I do have a hankering to see if my training in Japanese katana and bokken would stand me in good stead in such matches.
Of course, I'm like Trout with bad back and knees and such, but I don't think I'd mind trying one last time before I'm permanently assigned my late-middle-age Barc-O-Lounger

If you don't want to do the physical side you'd probably enjoy the faire scene more. It's more artsy and craftsy and frankly more entertaining. Depending on where you are decides the frequency of the faire (Some places have year round events, some like bumblefuck South Carolina are lucky to get one because this is the land that god has forsaken despite there being a thousand churches per every square inch of this fucking place ARGH).
I had a lot of fun dressing up and carrying on whenever I went to the faires, and if you are crafty in any way (I.e. know leatherwork/know how to drive a sewing machine) you can build your own costumes which becomes a hobby in and of itself.
EDIT: At my last job I knew a guy who was a leatherworker that spent most of the year crafting away at his hobby then he'd set up a booth at the Carolina Ren fest and sell it all. He made a pretty tidy profit.

There have actually been a fair number of exhibition matches I've seen Samurai VS Knight and honestly the Japanese style doesn't fair too well (Take that nerds!).

you want a pair of these boots: http://www.catskill-moc.com/
I had a pair but destroyed them through improper care (leather is leather). None of the boots I've picked up since have come close (My flared cuff buccaneer boots aren't bad, just not awesome).
